Overall Review

Fujifilm Finepix XQ1 camera offers a 12 megapixels 2/3-inch sized X-Tranas CMOS II sensor, the same sensor that is also found inside Fujifilm X-Pro1. The device comes with a bright f/1.8 lens, which is perfect for shooting under low light conditions, a 4x optical zoom, and a focal length range that covers 25-100mm, in 35mm terms. The 3-stop optical image stabilization feature cuts down on camera shake. The minimum focus distance is of 3cm, which means that macro shots come fine enough. At full resolution, images can be shot at up to 12fps. There are a number of shoot modes available for e.g., you can shoot under the advanced SR auto mode that itself manages camera configuration, detecting from among 64 types of scenes. One can also use full manual controls for full control over photography. The advanced modes include four options that are pro focus, pro low light, multiple exposure and motion panorama 360.

For more creativity, there is an advanced filter mode that includes pop colour, miniature and toy cam. Fujifilm Finepix XQ1 camera possesses film simulations as well like Astia / Soft, Velvia / Vivid, Sepia, Provia / Standard and Monochrome (+Ye / R / G filter). An inbuilt RAW files converter allows you to edit and view images without the need of any PC. You can adjust exposure compensation, white balance and others within the camera settings.

Design and Build Quality

Fujifilm Finepix XQ1 features a metallic body that can easily fit into your pocket. The front of the camera is textured to aid gripping. There is also a rubber grip at the back for right hand thumb. The lens is surrounded by a control ring that allows you to manage some of the settings that can be customized as per preference. Other options include; ISO, exposure compensation, zoom, shutter speed, aperture and more. At the top of the camera, there is mode dial, zoom rocker, power button, pop flash and shutter release. The buttons at the rear of the camera include playback button, display, video record and E-Fn. There is a d-pad along with the rotating wheel for browsing through the menu system. With dpad, you get access to flash, self-timer, macro and exposure compensation.

When you press the E-Fn button, a menu shows up on screen that enables a second use of buttons at the back. The options include white-balance, ISO and continuous shooting. To access Wi-Fi, one needs to enter playback and press the E-Fn button. Also, one needs to download Fujifilm’s camera application for iTunes before connecting with XQ1's Wi-Fi feature. You have to open the application after connection has been set up. You can view, transfer picture from/to camera apart from entering the receive option that lets you to pick images from the camera to be sent to a smartphone/tablet.

Focus and Face Detection

Fujifilm Finepix XQ1 focuses quickly at first but slows down on repeated focusing. The continuous shoot mode shoots images in Full resolution. The macro focus is of 3cm and the AF modes are Autofocus, Manual, Face Detection, AF Tracking and Multi and Centre.

Lens and Image Stabilization

Fujifilm Finepix XQ1 features an optical zoom lens with power up to 4x. The 3 stop optical image stabilization feature helps in avoiding the impact of camera shake over images. The maximum aperture range is of f/1.8 – f/4.9 . In 35mm terms, the focal length range is 25mm-100mm. The detailing at both ends of the lens, wide-angle and telephoto, is good. Purple fringing defect is kept controlled under contrasting areas. The minimum focusing distance is only of 3cm, which allows for excellent macro shots.

Screen and Menus

Fujifilm Finepix XQ1 features a 3 inches wide LCD monitor with screen resolution of 920k dots. It is bright and colorful and its resolution is brilliant. Even if you are shooting under bright sunlight, the monitor sunlight mode increases the brightness to make the view a lot easier. When you press the menu button, it pops the screen having 7 tabs where three are of titled setup and the rest four for shooting. The options that cannot be availed of get greyed out.


Fujifilm Finepix XQ1 comes rated with 240 shots as per CIPA testing standards, which means, you may have to struggle to shoot, should you are out for the entire day. If you wish to use Wi-Fi, carrying a spare battery is recommended. The device is powered by a Li-ion NP-4 battery, which gets shipped with an AC adapter named AC-5VT.

Video Mode

Fujifilm Finepix XQ1 records videos in Full HD, 1080p resolution at 60fps frame rate and one can also make use of film simulation modes. The quality of the video is good. When zooming in, the focus adjustment becomes slow and noise of the zoom gets picked up when capturing the video. The video resolutions are Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels), HD (1280 x 720 pixels), VGA (640 x 480 pixels) and QVGA (320 x 240 pixels). The frame rates used are 30fps or 60fps. The sound captured on video comes in stereo format.


Fujifilm Finepix XQ1 comes with a backside illuminated X-Trans CMOS II sensor with resolution of 12 megapixels. The width of the pixels is 4000 and height is 3000. The size of the sensor is of 2/3-inch. The aspect ratios are 3:2, 16:9, 4:3 and 1:1. Coming to the ISO performance, the noise is low at ISO100 and remains like that till ISO800. At ISO 1600, the images turn soft and softer at ISO3200. At ISO6400, the impact of the noise becomes considerable over the quality of the image and the loss of detail becomes more visible. At ISO12800, the loss of detail is even more, therefore, this setting is to be best avoided.
