Nikon 1 AW1 - Expert Reviews
Nikon 1 AW1 offers a unique design along with safety from shock, water, freezing and dust. That is why the camera is an all weather one and can be taken for swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving and travelling. The options for the lenses are limited, since the lenses too have to be waterproof. This feature of weather sealing has made the camera bulkier overall. The camera comes with a number of features such as the focus is quite quick, shutter response is well and is said to have the quickest of shoot modes for a mirrorless camera out today. Other Nikon 1 cameras shoot at 15fps with continuous autofocus or at 60fps with fixed AF.
If one wants the camera to be taken out for adventures, then this being an all weather camera would be recommended. There are 11 Nikon 1 lenses that are available now, for the last two obviously have been designed for this camera only, which are weather sealed. You can avail of the rest of the lenses as well. Though these are not the waterproof versions, they will fit into the camera and serve the purpose. Nikon 1 AW1 is a popular camera in India.
Design and Build Quality
Nikon 1 AW1 comes with a rugged design, metal body and strong built. There is metal grip at the front and a small rubber grip for the thumb to rest. The cam is all weather sealed. The lens has large metallic zoom about it and the white parts of the camera (white body) are all plastic. The ring at the front the lens is made of rubber. A filter can also be attached to the lens' front.
Focus and Face Detection
Nikon 1 AW1 uses the hybrid autofocus system, which means that both phase-detection and contrast based autofocus system are on the line. There is only one focus mode – autofocus and no face detection capability.
Lens and Image Stabilization
Nikon 1 AW1 has been introduced with two new lenses that are as weather-sealed as the camera itself. The first lens is 11-27.5mm f/3.5-5.6 zoom, which comes with the camera itself and provides a zoom range of up to 2.5x and a focal length range of 30-74mm, in 35mm terms. The second lens is 10mm f/2.8 lens. The device can be availed in body only format as well. Both the lenses offer inbuilt focusing capabilities and remain at the same length at all times. Lens hoods can be availed separately through purchase. Coming to the performance of the lenses, some of the barrel distortion and vignetting can be observed when you are shooting at wide-angle, though the inbuilt distortion correction feature does good work on its own and overall detailing must not face an issue. The lenses are resistant to flare unless your framing is causing the sun to come in it. In some of the photos, purple fringing can be observed in areas where there is high contrast. Macro shots are good, meaning the macro performance is just about fine. Detailing to the images is good and images are slightly soft when viewed at 100 percent magnification. No image stabilization is offered.
Screen and Menus
Nikon 1 AW1 offers a clean menu system, which is easy to understand and work with. The icons are large enough and make the navigating options quite easy to be used. The monitor is illuminated and clean, for you can even place it under water. The size of LCD is 3 inches wide with a screen resolution of 921k dots.
Nikon 1 AW1 runs on a rechargeable Li-ion battery, which is EN-EL20 by title. The life of the battery is rated at 220 shots as per CIPA/Nikon testing standards. This is quite small for a camera that is mirrorless by nature.
Nikon 1 AW1 captures Full HD video at 30 or 60fps (frames per second) along with stereo sound and fast phase-detection mechanism. The ultimate quality of the video is good. There is no image stabilization for videos, so you do not get very smooth videos. You can adjust the levels of the mic as well as turn on the filter for wind sounds. Other video modes are 1200fps and 400fps, where you can catch videos in the frame sizes of 320 x 240 pixels and 640 x 240 pixels, respectively. The 1200fps mode requires better lighting and only 5 seconds of clip can be recorded under this mode settings. Optical zoom can be availed with recording and Full HD video’s frame size is 1920 x 1080 pixels while HD video's frame size is 1280 x 720 pixels.
Nikon 1 AW1 offers a 14.2 megapixels sensor, which is CMOS by nature. It is sized at 1-inch with a width and height of 13.2mm and 8.8mm respectively. The pixels width is 4608 and height is 3072. The aspect ratios are 3:2 and 16:9. Coming to ISO performance, noise level is low at ISO160 and ISO200, some noise do kick in at ISO400 and can be observed at the dark areas of the image. At ISO800, the detail begins to depreciate and at ISO1600, more of the same effect is seen until this level noise is controlled well. At ISO3200, noise is quite noticeable and some of the pics may become usable if they are resized. At ISO6400, noise level is high and it is recommended that you avoid this setting.
