Nikon Coolpix AW120 Point & Shoot Black - Expert Reviews

Overall Review

Nikon Coolpix AW120 camera has surfaced as the all-weather successor to AW110 and offers a zoom scale of, in 35mm terms, 24mm wide-angle position to 120mm at telephoto position. The optics of the lens involves 12 elements in 10 groups with two ED elements with an aperture diaphragm that cannot be adjusted. Its AF is based on a 99 point contrast-detection that includes face-priority, subject-tracking and target-finding wherein, the closest distance for focusing is 1cm at wide-angle. The camera's ruggedness involves being shockproof to 6.6 feet, waterproof to 59 feet and freezeproof to 14 to 10 degrees. At the back of the lens, a back lit CMOS sensor sits with a resolution of 16 megapixels and size of 1/2.3-inch. The all weather camera has burst mode speed of 6.9fps for five shots per second.

The ISO sensitivity range of Nikon Coolpix AW120 begins from ISO 125 to ISO 1600, which can be further extended to as high as ISO 6400 when in Auto modes. The selection of 19 user-friendly scene modes let you handle the ultimate creativity that makes up an image. The scene auto selector function does the guesswork to get the best possible shot automatically and matrix metering is used for most of the exposure-setting task. If one uses 2x digital zoom, then center-weighted metering gets activated. Beyond this level, the digital zoom opts for spot metering. Moreover, reviewing and framing images are done via OLED monitor, which is 3 inches wide, has resolution of 921k dots, and is secured by anti-reflective coating. The video work is handled in full HD where the fame size remains at 1920 x 1080p with frame rates that can be either 30 or 60fps.

One can also shoot at 12.5/15fps frame rates to achieve a speedy playback. The dropped resolution, VGA, can get you frame rates as high as 120fps and slow mo playback. The compression for videos is in MP4/h.264 format with audio in LPCM stereo format. Nikon Coolpix AW120 picks up power from a EN-EL12 Li-ion rechargeable battery pack which, as per CIPA testing standards, produces 350 shots on a single charge. The NTSC/PAL standard-definition composite video, USB 2.0 high-speed data and type-D micro HDMi high-def video together form the connectivity options. Videos and images are stored inside SD/SDXC/SDHC cards and there is 329MB of inbuilt storage. The camera, Nikon Coolpix AW120 can be availed in four colors of Black, Blue, Orange and Camouflage.

Design and Build Quality

Nikon Coolpix AW120, as the abbreviation suggests, is related to the all-weather line up of digicams that are tough ones and meant basically for adventurers and travellers. The camera is waterproof, freezeproof and shockproof and can manage to work in any conditions - below or above sea level. Since the camera is loaded with GPS technology, the images can be tagged with detail of the location they were shot. Also, there is an inbuilt mapping and electronic compass to help in navigation. The inbuilt Wi-Fi connectivity enables the user to share images and videos with smart devices and phones.

Nikon Coolpix AW120 can be placed onto a chest harness to enable the user to safely fasten the camera to his/her chest and catch stills and videos from a different point of view. The camera can also be fitted with optional silicone jackets to account for its safety. These jackets can be availed in the color choices of Orange, Black, Khaki and Blue. The camera has quite a durable and promising exterior.

Focus and Face Detection

Nikon Coolpix AW120 features a contrast-detection 99 point system, which includes face-priority, target-finding and subject-tracking. The minimum focusing distance is 1cm at wide-angle position thus making up for nice macro shots.

Lens and Image Stabilization

Nikon Coolpix AW120 offers NIKKOR glass lens with a zoom power up to 5x zoom. In 35mm-equivalent terms, the zoom scale ranges from 24mm at wide-angle to 120mm at telephoto position. The maximum aperture is f/2.8, bright at wide-angle and then,  falls to f/4.9 as you reach the telephoto position. The optics of the lens is 12 elements in 10 groups type construction with two ED elements among the numbers. There is no adjustable diaphragm and the digital zoom has been further advanced by Dynamic Fine Zoom. Coming to image stabilization, it is achieved by hybrid vibration reduction including both lens-shift and electronic version for stills. The digital zoom can go up to 4x.

Screen and Menus

Nikon Coolpix AW120 lets you frame and review images as well as videos via an organic LED screen. The OLED monitor sports 3 inches wide screen with a resolution of 921k dots and possesses an anti-reflective coating. The brightness can be adjusted in 5 levels.

Nikon Coolpix AW120 derives its power from a EN-EL12 Li-ion rechargeable battery. As per CIPA testing standards, the camera is said to produce, 350 shots on a single full charge. The AC adapter, EH-62F can be availed separately and the charging time becomes 2 hours and 20 minutes should you use the AC adapter named EH-71P.

Video Mode

Nikon Coolpix AW120 can record videos at resolutions up to Full HD with frame size of 1920 x 1080p. The frame rates that can generally be chosen are 30/60fps. One can also shoot at a lessened rate of 12.5/15fps for a speedy playback. If the lower resolution of 640 x 480p is chosen, then the frame rate can be chosen for as high as 120fps. Also, you can avail of the slow mo playback on videos. The compression used for the videos would be H.264/MP4 AVC with the sound in LPCM stereo format.

Nikon Coolpix AW120 features a 16 megapixels back lit CMOS sensor of 1/2.3-inch size. The ISO sensitivity range begins from ISO 125 and goes up to ISO 1600. Within Auto modes, the ISO can be extended to ISO 6400. The size of the image stays 4608 x 3456.

  • It is an all-weather resistant camera
  • GPS, Wi-Fi and electronic compass are the native features
  • Camera can be availed in Orange, Blue, Camouflage and Black colours

  • Nikon Coolpix AW120 may be too light for someone to lose the hold accidentally while travelling
