Nikon Coolpix L22 Black - Expert Reviews
Nikon, one of the finest camera brands in the world looks to strengthen its grip in the local market with the introduction of Nikon Coolpix L22 in the Point & Shoot division. Main features of the device are a 12 Megapixel CCD sensor, Looking at the 12-megapixel Nikon Coolpix L22, by the very looks of it it is understood why it is worth buying. It's a good-looking compact camera at a low price with three things people would be attracted to: a 3-inch LCD, AA batteries for power, and the Nikon brand. A lethal Combination!! Pop in its batteries and the camera has a nice weight to it, making it feel like a sturdy, well-built camera and like almost all the devices in the L class of Nikon Series L22 is very much a fully automatic point-and-shoot with little to adjust except for maybe picking an appropriate scene mode. What disappoints however is the fact that Nikon Coolpix L22 is a little too limited in the feature department, though, which can make it difficult to take photos, the sole purpose of buying cameras. Teamed up with average lens quality and some performance concerns and you have an entry-level camera that's really not good for much beyond taking snapshots of portraits and landscapes in full sunlight for use at small sizes or online. It is really very comfortable to use, though, with simple controls that are big and easy to read. The screen is a definite positive as it is larger than usual for an entry-level camera and gets reasonably bright. The lens, on the other hand, is a disappointment. Let us find out the whole detailed features and performances in the review.
Design and Build Quality
Nikon COOLPIX L22 is a really small device and the bold angular styling has been outmoded by a softer, gently curved front panel that widens on the right side to provide a natural hand grip. One disadvantage again of the twin AA batteries, the kerb weight that they carry along with it, hence even after the tiny built camera is significantly heavy measuring at 183 gms. The entire back of the camera is finished in black plastic and will stay just a shadow of the front as it looks nothing spectacular. We all are aware that Canon and Nikon are two titans of the camera world and as an answer to Canon, Nikon has relocated relocating the zoom control from a rocker switch on the rear panel of Nikon Coolpix L20 to a collar around the shutter release Nikon Coolpix L22. The shooting mode button is a good example. Pressing it activates a menu with five choices, only one of which provides a further level of options. The single-level options are Auto, Easy auto, Smart portrait, and Movie. The Scene option displays a further 16 scene modes. Next down the body of the device is a four-position control pad that provides one-touch access to flash, exposure compensation, macro focussing and self-timer controls and doubles up as a menu navigation control. Finally, at the bottom of the rear panel is a button to access Nikon Coolpix L22's menu system and another for deleting individual shots.
Focus and Face Detection
Focus range of Nikon Coolpix L22 varies from 30cm to infinity in wide and 70cm to infinity in the tele mode. When we look at the Macro close up tele mode the approximate range ranges from 5 cm to infinity. The camera also provides focus lock.
Lens and Image Stabilization
Nikon COOLPIX L22 retains the 6.7-24mm (37-134mm equivalent) lens which was sported once by its predecessor. The 3.6x optical zoom lens has a highest aperture of f3.1 at the wide focal length, diminishing to f6.7 at the telephoto end. And seriously 3.6x zoom is nothing to write about, an absolute disappointment. Talking about the focussing range, the equivalent 37mm wide angle lets you easily shoot a group of four in an average-sized living room. And the 134mm telephoto will help you get nice and close for head and shoulders portraits without being intrusive, but with a zoom like that this is not really going to be a help in a park or a landscape picture. Use of digital lens for further increase of zoom just decreases the photo quality. . At the maximum image size setting, the central section of the full frame image is enlarged and pixel values are interpolated to produce a new full-sized shot. As there's no means of disabling the digital zoom you need to take care not to activate it accidentally.
Screen and Menus
Screen of Nikon CoolPix L22 is in dimensions 3 inch wide and has an image resolution of 230,000 pixels, the great thing about this is that at this price range, the device is offering much more than you can expect. Pressing the menu button on the rear panel of the L22 displays a two-tab menu system. What's displayed here is dependent on the shooting mode, in Easy Auto mode and many of the scene modes most Shooting menu settings are disabled. Even in Auto mode they're confined to image mode (size and compression) White Balance, continuous shooting and colour options.
What powers Nikon CoolPix L22 is a pair of AA batteries. Replacing these old and comparatively inefficient batteries with NiMH or lithium batteries can significantly increase the no. of shots or the hours of video recording in one run. You can replace the supplied alkaline cells when they die after 240 shots or shell out for NiMH or Lithium rechargeables which will get you 420 or 660 shots respectively between charges. Whatever option you choose, though, is going to mean additional financial outlay, unless of course you already have some spare AAs. Whichever you opt for, you need to tell the L22 via the setup menu.
The COOLPIX L22 provides two movie settings, recording at resolutions of 640x480 and 320x240 pixels, both at 30 frames per second. Movies are saved in an AVI wrapper using a Motion JPEG codec. The maximum length of a single movie is 29 minutes or when the file reaches 2GB.
Nikon COOLPIX’s L22's 1/2.3in CCD sensor records images with a maximum resolution of 4000x3000 pixels. At this size, two options for the compression of images are available with quoted compression ratios of 1:4 and 1:8 what we conclude of this is that the better quality mode applies half the compression of the other one. The best quality mode produces files of around 5MB in size. The ISO range of the sensor is 80 to 1600 ISO and the shutter speed range is 1 – 1/2000 with a 4 second option in the Fireworks Show scene mode. Nikon CoolPix L22 has 19MB of built-in memory.
Inexpensive and uncomplicated.
Excellent build quality for the money.
3in / 230k screen.
12 Megapixel sensor.
No optical or sensor-shift stabilization.
Poor Face detection in low light.
Image quality lacking viewed at 100%.
No TV cable supplied.
Looks cool, great value for money. But you have to attach external AA batteries to it... that is the only concern of this Camera. Else, this is a cool handy product to carry. The easy auto mode is one of the best features of it.
