Nikon Coolpix L610 Point & Shoot - Expert Reviews

Overall Review

The Nikon Coolpix L610 is a new AA battery powered, 16-megapixel travel zoom camera with 14x optical zoom and Full HD video recording capabilities. Featuring a back-illuminated CMOS sensor, 25-350mm equivalent lens with two ED glass elements and Vibration Reduction, the Nikon Coolpix L610 comes with a dedicated movie record button, mini HDMI port and a 3-inch rear screen boasting a resolution of 460,000 dots. Nikon’s New COOLPIX L610 Compact Camera with Incredible Zoom Lens makes it Easy to Capture a Family’s Active, Always On-the-Go Lifestyle.  Another nice feature is Easy Auto Mode. Simply turn it on, and the L610 will automatically select one of six pre-programmed Scene Modes that best fits your current shooting conditions.

Design and Build Quality

The Nikon Coolpix L610 offers an interesting alternative to the existing Coolpix S8200 model. Sure, it's a little bigger, but it's also noticeably more affordable. Its gently-curved body looks friendlier, and offers a chunkier handgrip that should make it more comfortable in the hand. Alongside the Nikon L610's chunky handgrip is a powerful, Nikorr ED-branded 14x optical zoom lens. It looks to be the exact same unit from the S8200, offering everything from a generous 25mm-equivalent wide angle to a powerful 350mm telephoto.Although featuring the same design, the J2 now features a metal body and a 3in rear-facing LCD panel - used both for image review and for framing in the absence of a viewfinder - which has doubled in resolution over the J1. The Nikon Coolpix L610 has dimensions of approximately 4.3 x 2.7 x 1.4 inches (108 x 68.4 x 34.1 mm) excluding projections, and weighs 8.5 oz. (240 g) including batteries (type unspecified) and SD memory card.

Focus and Face Detection

Nikon Coolpix L610 offers Focus Autofocus (9 points) manually which makes the cam easy to use. Autofocus features various things like Tracking, Face / smile detection and many more. Face / smile detection automatically sets the focus to the smiling face. Moreover its Shutter speed 1/ 1600 – 1 sec which is quite perfect.

Lens and Image Stabilization

On the lens, the Nikon Coolpix L610 brings to the lens with 25mm-350mm range or have a 14x optical zoom.  Photographers can experience amazing depth and sharpness in their photos thanks to the 14x optical zoom that covers from a wide-angle 25mm to a distant 350mm (35mm format equivalent), making this an ideal camera to cover near, far and everything in between. This high-performance NIKKOR lens has two ED glass elements and lens construction consisting of 11 elements in 10 groups. For photographing close-up subjects, macro shooting is possible from as close as approximately 0.4 in/1 cm (at wide-angle setting). Additionally, optical VR image stabilization minimizes the effects of camera shake to help users create sharp, clear photos and videos in challenging light or while handheld. With a 16.0-megapixel backside illuminated (BSI) CMOS sensor, image details can be beautifully reproduced even in low-light.

Screen and Menus

The rear panel of the Nikon L610 offers up a 3.0-inch TFT LCD panel with a resolution of around 153,000 pixels (460,000 dots, with each pixel comprised of adjacent red, green, and blue dots.) The L610's screen is said to have an anti-reflective coating, and a five-level brightness adjustment. On the top deck, a built-in popup flash helps out when shooting nearby subjects in low light. There's no hot shoe or other external flash connectivity, and information on flash range wasn't available at press time.

Power comes from AA batteries, but one needs to pay attention to the type they are using. Lithium disposables are rated for approximately 470 shots on a charge to CIPA testing standards, or 80 minutes of video capture. Switching to Nikon EN-MH2 NiMH rechargeable batteries will likely save money (and quite a bit of waste), but reduces battery life to 330 shots or 50 minutes of video. Alkaline can be used in a pinch, but battery life plunges to just 120 shots, and you can drain a new set of alkaline in just 11 minutes of video. An optional EH-65A AC adapter is available for longer shooting sessions, if a power point is convenient.

Video Mode

To create consistently great images, Nikon's Easy Auto Mode automatically selects from among six Scene Modes including Portrait, Landscape, Night Portrait, Night landscape, Close-up and Backlighting to fit the most common challenging scenes. By simply framing the subject, the most appropriate Scene Mode is automatically selected according to the shooting situation. This allows the photographer to be ready for any possible occasion, whether it is a flattering portrait of a friend in front of a nighttime city skyline, or a subject that is backlit from the sun. Shooting modes are in line with Nikon's other L-series models, which means one can find Nikon's Easy Auto Mode, some scene modes, and a Program Auto, for control of ISO, white balance, and exposure compensation.Catering to photographers who'd rather not learn the intricacies of shutter speeds, apertures, and the like, the Nikon Coolpix L610 includes an Easy Auto shooting mode. Furthermore, users can enjoy recording impressive movies in Full HD 1080p with stereo sound. The conveniently located Movie-Record button enables one-touch recording at anytime. To make sharing simple, the HDMI mini connector and USB/audio video connector make it quick and easy to upload videos and photos.

At the heart of the Nikon Coolpix L610 is a backside-illuminated CMOS image sensor with an effective resolution of 16.0 megapixels. Backside-illuminated sensors place their circuitry on the rear (non-illuminated) side of the chip, leaving more space on the active side available for light-gathering and thereby increasing sensitivity. The Nikon L610 offers sensitivities ranging from ISO 125 to 1,600 equivalents, and this can be extended to ISO 3,200 equivalent when using the Auto mode. Total resolution of the L610's 1/2.3-inch type imager is 16.79 megapixels.

The COOLPIX L610 makes it simple to get creative with your images and movies. The Quick Retouch Menu lets you enhance the photos you have taken without the need for a computer, offering a range of filter effects such as Selective Color, which converts your image to monochrome and adds a splash of color to an area of your choice, or Cross Screen, which adds a starry effect to bright objects

The Nikon COOLPIX L610 do not offer a touch screen  display and is not featured with any viewfinder.
