Nikon Coolpix L810 Point & Shoot Digital Camera Black - Expert Reviews

Overall Review

One of the strongest areas of business of Nikon is the compact super-zoom line of cameras, one such device is Nikon Coolpix L810 which is a within-budget super-zoom camera which features a 26x stabilised range alongside a 26x stabilised range, a 16.1 megapixel CCD sensor and a fixed 3in screen with 921k pixel resolution. Announced in February 2012, it replaces the COOLPIX L120, increasing the zoom range from 21x and upping the sensor resolution from 14 megapixels. This device runs on 4 AA batteries and has a pop-up in built flash which is accompanied by 50 MB of built-in memory. It is basically a Point & Shoot superzoom, which comes along with ease of use, compactness and affordability, these constitute its major selling points. Nikon COOLPIX L810 has 720p HD video but lacks PASM exposure modes and also eschews many of the features that differentiate point and shoot models from other manufacturers. The There are no filter effects, no special stacking modes and no 'accessibility' modes designed to avail novices of features like exposure, white balance and depth of field control. As such, it has a bit of a 'no-frills' feel about it, but it does have two auto modes - one with scene recognition - face detect AF and a range of conventional scene modes. As such Nikon COOLPIX L810 could prove an attractive option for point-and-shooters looking to upgrade from a compact to something with a much longer zoom reach without the additional complication that might go with some of the more advanced super-zooms.

Design and Build Quality

As the rest of Nikon devices from Coolpix series, there is no doubt that when it comes to the looks, the camera is gorgeous with the same mini-SLR type styling of high-end super-zooms. When you put it along with a full size superzoom; for example, Panasonic Lumix FZ60, it looks a little more compact but not much. If you put it between the Canon PowerShot SX500 IS and Panasonic Lumix FZ60/FZ62 its size is more or less midway between the two. For the record, the exact dimensions of the device are 111mm x 76mm x 83mm and the device weighs 430 gms including four AA batteries and a memory card. Available in red, blue, bronze and black with a high gloss plastic finish, the COOLPIX L810 is finished in black trim and has a soft plastic textured grip along with a thumb pad on the rear. It's comfortable to hold and when using two hands your left thumb naturally falls into a position on the barrel-mounted zoom rocker.

Focus and Face Detection

This central AF is the default mode in Easy Auto when there are no faces in the frame. Face detect works well when people are facing the camera in good light and within a range of about four or five metres. One would rather prefer centre AF to multi area AF, but in a camera that's clearly aimed at point-and-shoot casual photographers this is a poor alternative to multi-area AF as implemented on Canon PowerShot SX500 IS and most point-and-shoot compacts.

Lens and Image Stabilization

Nikon COOLPIX L810 has 26x optical zoom with an equivalent range of 22.5 to 585mm and a maximum aperture of f3.1-5.9. The zoom can be controlled by one of two zoom rockers, one surrounding the shutter release and the other on the left side of the lens barrel. Just because I'm comparing it with the 30x Canon PowerShot SX500 IS, don't be fooled into thinking the COOLPIX L810's range is somehow inadequate. A 26x zoom will get most people as close into the action as they are likely to want to go. 585mm is a long telephoto by any standards.

Screen and Menus

The rear panel has a 3-inch LCD screen which looks bigger, but has quite a large surround - a black area on all four sides behind the clear protective plastic. The screen is fixed and has a resolution of 921 thousand pixels. It provides a clear and detailed view indoors and outdoors in dull conditions. At this point, it is usually warned about no screen being easy to see in bright sunny conditions, but despite its anti-reflection coating, it is found that Nikon COOLPIX L810 screen is particularly poor in this respect. In bright conditions I found it difficult to make out anything at all on the screen, even when the sun wasn't shining directly on it. So I'd recommend you get a good look at the screen in bright conditions before making a purchasing decision.

The combined battery and card compartment is accessed via a large hinged door that covers the entire right side of the camera below the hand grip. Nikon COOLPIX L810 manages to squeeze a very respectable 300 shots from the four alkaline AA batteries supplied with the camera. Use NiMH or Lithium rechargeables and you'll do even better. Aside from the weight, the only drawback with AAs is that, if you're not careful and turn the camera upside down with the door open, they all fall out; on the upside, it is probably something you'll only do once.

Video Mode

Nikon COOLPIX L810 can shoot HD video at 1280x720p resolution at 30 frames per second. Images are encoded using the H.264 codec at an average bit rate of 11Mbps. That's comparatively low - Canon PowerShot SX500 IS uses the same H.264 codec but at almost double the L810's bit rate - so the L810 is quality won't be as good, but it does have the advantage of allowing you to fit more video on a card - nearly one hour's worth on a 4GB card. There's also a VGA 640 x 480 standard definition mode that records at 3Mbps. Nikon recommends using a speed class 6 card or faster for recording video.

Nikon COOLPIX L810 has a 16.1 megapixel CCD sensor which produces still images with a maximum image size of 4608 x 3456 at one of two JPEG compression settings. The best quality setting produces images with a file size of around 6 to 7MB. The ISO sensitivity range is 80 to 1600 ISO and the shutter speed range is from 1 to 1/1500 in Auto modes extending to 4 seconds in Fireworks mode.

1. 26x stabilised optical zoom.
2. Excellent Battery life.
3. Inexpensive.
4. Simple, no frills feature set.

1. Very poor continuous shooting.
2. Slow and limited Autofocus.
3. Slow video response.
4. Slow zoom response.
5. Screen difficult to see in bright light.

Good product, lets compare.
by Ahmad Baig on 2012-11-21

I own a Nikon Coolpix L310 (14.1mp, ccd, 21x zoom, wide lens), its like the younger sibling of this L810 which is priced at Rs 11.5k. My freind owns a L810, and I got to tell you, if you are thinking about going with this camera, you rather go and get the L310! After using my L310 for a long time, I found certain cons on the L810 which are not there on L310- the camera shows noise on the dark areas... which I think is not there on the L310, and the pictures are likewise noisier (better check for yourselves). Due to the fact the L310 having a better low light sensitivity (with ISO 80-6400) than that of L810 (ISO 80-1600). And mind you, you will need more of that low light sensor than you need the zoom. another thing which I din't liked is that the buttons felt cheaper, than on my L310. Plastic felt indian made. Rest everything felt good and equal. Battery, flash, clarity, are all just like on the L310. And if you are still thinking about the L810 because of better specs, let me tell you, practically 14.2mp and 16.1mp make only as much difference as a 3mp and a 3.4mp, you won't even notice it, the difference is so small. Same goes for the zoom, which might be wooing you, while 5x to 10x is like twice the better, but 21x to 26x is negligible. I have used both of them simultaneously, the difference is not noticeable at all. The only reason for you buying the L810 over L310 is if you want an hdmi port. The decision is yours. :) No offence. Yes I am a fan of my camera, but I do not criticize a product just because I don't own it. :)

Excellent Product from Nikon
by Dwaipayan Bhowmik on 2012-05-07

It is a decked up version of the L120 but miles ahead in performance. The 16.1 Megapixels will never stop to amaze you.I bought it 1 week back, although not from FlipKart and am loving every pixel it clicks.
The Autofocus is pretty awesome and photography in low light condition is stunning even without a flash(for moments u don't want to spoil with a flash).
The image stabilisers delivers super sharp images even at 14x zoom(unless you are violently shaking). At 26x I was amazed to capture details with clarity(thanks to the EXPEED C2 image processor also). It looks and feels like a DSLR but is much lighter ofcource and comfortable to grip and click.
In macro mode I was able to capture the minutest details.
Overall its the best value for money at this price range.Perfect for those casual day out's!

.Ultra Zoom
.LCD Brightness under sun.
.Image stabilizers and processors

.Don't expect it to fit into your pocket or purse.
.Zooming sometimes a bit sluggish(rare moments).
.Panorama needs to be stitched manually with the software provided.

This said,its worth a buy.Extremely satisfied.

Super Choice....
by Krishnayan Chakraborty on 2012-05-03

What a camera. The clarity of photos during night & the truck loads of modes just make the experience delighful.

For amateurs like me, it would take half an hour to get used to the basic functionalities.

I did not get a chance to click photos during the day, but I am sure it would surpass my expectation.

If you have an old digicam and want to upgrade to psuedo DSLR without taking the hassles of a DSLR. This is it

Flipkart's service was asusual terric (This is my second electronic purchase).

by DEVERSHEE PANDIT on 2012-07-13

Wanted to buy a camera but wanted to restrict myself to 15k otherwise sky can be the limit if someone wants to spend money on a camera.
Anyways long story short this camera is a pseudo DSLR camera and image quality it is giving me is quite AMAZING!! Video shooting at 720p is awesome as well and can be checked out on youtube for proof.
Lastly one of the reviewer had mentioned that having NI-MHx4 batteries is one of this camera's weakpoint is wrong because u may always end up at a place with this beauty where there is no electricity like (some indian and thai villages)and therefore u can buy alkaline batteries to power up this camera for a long time.
Lastly NIKON is truly a awesome company to have cramped up so many features in a camera costing only 15k and is EXTREMELY lightweight.

Found it poor on some edges...
by Vaibhav Joshi on 2012-09-04

Having better functionality and awesome qualities though got some real negative experience in group photography, just experiencing "Lens Distortion" issue within. found defect in the product. guys, please check your product all the way before you brought. Second thing when you turn on the camera and try to click images using zoom, the zoom trigger was found fail to work for second's. Feel that company should rectify this problems from the launched. overall average buying.

Amazing Camera for an Amazing price
by Krishna Kumar Nanjundaprasad on 2012-05-14

I ordered this camera 2 days ago and it was delivered in the promised time. Thank you Flipkart for your amazing service.

This is one hell of a camera. Its loaded with stunning features and a powerful lens with splendid zoom capability.
Kudos to NIKON.

Coming to the cons; its AA battery powered.

Bad and Grainy Image Quality
by Vijayanand.L on 2012-11-13

I was looking for a decent bridge camera which was reasonably priced. I went for a Nikon Coolpix L810 just by its brand and its writeup and review here. My mistake. Any camera worth its salt should produce crisp & clear images whatever else features it is loaded with. If it cannot do that then the camera is a worthless piece. The images shot from this camera are worse than the pics shot from any ordinary point and shoot cameras costing half its price. Just google using the search phrase "Nikon Coolpix L810 Image Quality" and you will know the story. I did not do this due diligence before buying, so now I am poorer by 13.5k and stuck with a camera which I am not going to use.
That said, I should say Flipkart patiently listened to all my complaints and promptly responded to my mails. But ultimately they are not willing to exchange it for another brand which is higher priced but willing to replace the same camera! Strange!
This is my last tryst with online shopping. Thank you very much!

Awesome feeling like a mini DSLR
