Nikon Coolpix P520 Point & Shoot Digital Camera Black - Expert Reviews

Overall Review

Nikon Coolpix P520 Point and Shoot camera possesses the capability of  pushing aside any competition in the high level Point and Shoot range with its lens mount of 42x optical zoom that produces at 35mm equivalent, a colossal focal length of 24 -1000mm. The many features offered by the camera are as follows: side zoom control, 1/2.3 inches backside CMOS sensor that gives an effective strength of 18.1 megapixels, sensitivity range from ISO 80 to ISO 6400, full HD video recording capability measuring 1080p. Also, bundled alongside stereo sound specifications are the slo-mo video capturing techniques that are capable of capturing videos at frame rates of as high as 120fps. Nikon Coolpix P520 is especially targeted at an audience, which has a deep love for photography but does not want to upgrade to a DSLR.

As such, the device consists of a full manual shooting mode, gigantic 99 point AF system, a 3D shooting mode, inbuilt GPS system, 7 frames per second burst shooting mode and Wi-fi dongle, which is obviously optional, the rear of the camera contains a 3.2 inches big screen which has a truly detailed clocking at 921,000 dots.

Design and Build Quality

To talk about the dimensions of any camera, it is very important to understand the ergonomics of that device. As such, the exact dimensions of Nikon Coolpix P520 stand at 125.2mm x 84.1mm x 101.6mm, and the camera is quite bigger than its predecessor, so it is quite understandable that a 42x zoom lens is able to fit into the device, but then the difference in design is hardly noticeable. Like most of the high-end superzoom cameras, Nikon Coolpix P520 also is the prototype of a bridge camera, as the handgrip seems very chunky to say the least, the lens barrel is very big, the EVF is set at the eye level of the camera, and there is the availability of a pop up flash in the camera. The grip depth of the device is simply set so that it fits tremendously well in your hands and the rubberised material only adds to your comfort level.

Focus and Face Detection

Talking about the focusing options of Nikon Coolpix P520, you can make your choices from 4 modes which include:

1.   AF

2.   Macro

3.   Infinity

4.   Manual

In the Auto Focus mode, we have simply an unbelievable 99-point AF system, most of which are cross type points such that when you operate the device in camera selectable mode, the AF reduces to 9 points. When you make your turn towards face detection in the Face Priority AF mode, you can select from the dedicated 12 faces in a frame and the lens will adjust its focus on the face that is nearest to the device. Keeping aside that, there is the existence of AF area mode wherein, the auto focus speed works fine for stills, but fails to work as we expect in mobile object case.

A focusing option mentioned above is manual focusing, which is a surprise really on a Point and Shoot, although it turns out to be quite uneasy. On the right of the screen, you will find UP and DOWN buttons that can be used to adjust focus. The centre of the device is obviously quite large for focus point checking, but sadly, it turns out to be quite ineffective, this actually is achieved rather by interpolation and not by magnification.

Lens and Image Stabilization

Now, let us talk about the feature where the true money of the camera, Nikon Coolpix P520 lies, the enormous 42x zoom lens and the focal length it offers is simply in 35mm terms, just astonishing when it goes to a modest 24mm in the wide angle to a jaw dropping 1000mm in the 35mm equivalent mode. Actually, consider that even in a DSLR, you would require 18-135 lenses in the series to achieve what this camera does. And that been said, when fully retracted, it is actually quite compact, although it extends enormously at 1000mm telephoto, but obviously, we do not have any problem with that and can happily live with it. The ability of Nikon Coolpix P520 from the wide-angle mode to full telephoto mode is a feature that has impressed many people. And the camera quite certainly provides you with a certain freedom of use.

Given the kind of lens we are dealing with, Nikon Coolpix P520’s lens is certainly very fast with the maximum aperture range measuring f/3 at 24mm or f/5.9 at the full telephoto 1000mm. The lens cap has to be removed before turning off your device, if not, you will find an error message, which certainly can annoy you a lot, and is actually the worst part of the camera for us.

Screen and Menus

Images on Nikon Coolpix P520 can be taken in two possible ways and yes, there is the availability of EVF in the camera. The pictures can be formed by taking the assistance of an EVR or you can just use the back screen of the camera. The screen on the camera is quite good and is a highly detailed 3 inches rear LCD screen that is tremendous to look at thanks to the ultra high resolution of 921,000 dot pixel screen. Although, the better part is yet to come, the screen is now not a fixed one on the camera but can very easily flip out to the side of the device and be made to tilt 270 degrees, which only adds on to the huge flexibility of the camera in composing the shots. This really is a huge improvement over the limited movement offered by its predecessor’s screen.

The powerhouse of Nikon Coolpix P520 is the standard 1100mAh Li-ion battery, which is quite dissapointing, for a camera whose specifications speak of such a big achievement, a battery which is able to draw out only 200 shots would be a failure in anyone’s terms. We also have a small internal memory in the camera, but at full 18.1 megapixels, it would hardly help at all in keeping any photos, so definitely, you would need the use of a memory card.

Video Mode

Absolute stunner here too, Nikon Coolpix P520 works on full HD 1080p movie mode and involves all the possible frame rates at 60i, 50i, 30p and 24p, again a feat that you would not even enjoy in some of the DSLRs in the market. Accompanying the video quality is the stereo sound, which works very well alongside the full access to a new optical zoom lens. Another mode offered, although playing as a sideline part is the 720p HD at 25 frames per second. We also have an iFrame 960 x 540 pixels mode, which you can shoot at 30 or 25 frames per second. Apart from these major modes, you have a VGA 640 X 480 pixels mode in which, videos can be shot at 30 and 25p frame rate. Nikon’s innovation in this case has given a tremendous output.

Now, there is this availability of Wind Noise Reduction functionality available in the Movie mode of the camera. This serves in such a way that the minimum effect of the wind noise gets to the sensor, so that it produces a very irritating sound through a microphone, we strongly recommend you to turn this on only at the time you are suffering from high wind density. And this results in the reduction of other sounds and drains the battery life fully. Sony-Shift Vibration reduction has also been made available normally but not on movie recording.

Nikon Coolpix P520 now sports a brand new 1/2.3 inches, 18.1 megapixels CMOS sensor that is capable of producing images, which have a maximum resolution of 4896 x 3672 pixels. The photos in the device are saved in as JPEGs at one of the two-quality settings, Normal and Fine of the camera. The ISO sensitivity of the camera ranges from 80 to 6400 ISO and its shutter speed ranges from a minimum of 8 seconds to a maximum of 1/4000 seconds, impressive again.

  • Capable 42x optical zoom range
  • Big, detailed 3.2 in articulated screen
  • Excellent VR optical stabilisation
  • Built-in GPS with POI database

  • Slow handling and writing to card
  • Poor battery life
  • No built-in Wi-fi
  • No hot shoe
  • No RAW mode
