Nikon Coolpix P530 Point & Shoot Black - Expert Reviews

Overall Review

Nikon Coolpix P530 is a camera that would attract rookies and novices and comes with 19 user-friendly scene modes, a scene auto selector function to take the responsibility of getting the best possible shot from the scene at hand and other unusual modes like bird watch and moon mode to make more of its existing zoom capability. Also, on this camera, one can control program, priority and manual shoot modes apart from the choice of matrix, spot or center metering, 2EV exposure compensation in 1/3EV steps, bracketing of exposure and six modes on white balance taking in preset manual as well. The general shutter speed range is 1/4000 to 15 seconds, although it depends upon ISO and aperture. Sadly, there is no external flash provision but an inbuilt pop flash ranging 26 feet at wide-angle and 14 feet at telephoto, when Auto ISO sensitivity is on.

The camera, Nikon Coolpix P530 is compatible with optional Wu-1a Wi-Fi adapter and you would have to pay extra for the accessory but once bought, you would be able to share your images and videos easily on a network. The camera picks power from a Li-ion rechargeable battery named EN-EL5 such that, you can get 240 shots as per the CIPA testing standards on one full charge. The connectivity options include, NTSC/PAL standard-definition composite video, USB 2.0 high-speed data and Type-D micro HDMi high-def video. Moreover, all the shots get stored inside SD/SDXC/SDHC memory cards or inside the 56MB inbuilt capacity. There is a backlit CMOS sensor with a resolution of 16 megapixels and size of 1/2.3-inch. The burst mode speed is of 7fps and the ISO sensitivity range begins from ISO 100 to ISO 1600 and can be extended to ISO 6400, in manual, program, aperture, shutter and aperture modes.

The range can further be expanded to ISO 12800 in monochrome mode. Imaging can be done in two ways - via electronic viewfinder of 0.2 inches and resolution 201k dots or with TFT LCD at the back with a resolution of 921k dots and anti-reflective coating. The videos can be shot at a resolution of up to full HD with frame size 1920 x 1080p and frame rates of 30/60fps. Also, reduced frame rates of 12.5/15fps can get you speedy playback or lessened resolution – VGA or 640 x 480p will get you 120fps frame rate and slow mo playback. The video compression is of MP4/H.264 AVC involving LPCM stereo audio. Coming to the lens work of Nikon Coolpix P530, in 35mm terms, a zoom scale of 24mm at wide-angle position and 1000mm at telephoto position, the maximum aperture of f/3.0 to f/5.9 gets justified across the zoom range.

The optics of the lens includes 14 elements in 10 groups and four ED elements. The AF system is based on contrast-detection and uses techniques like face-priority, subject-tracking and target-finding. The closest focusing distance is of 1cm at wide-angle. The camera features ‘Dynamic Fine Zoom’ feature, a smart version of digital zoom that can get you 2000mm at telephoto position and still produce acceptable images. The advanced lens based vibration reduction on the other hand, fights the blur. Nikon Coolpix P530 gets shipped in Black colour only.

Design and Build Quality

Nikon Coolpix P530 comes with an abundant grip and is designed and shaped ergonomically with the placing of the rubber texture. Most parts of the body of the camera is plastic and thus, is tough and lends not much flexibility especially the fixed LCD. As far as the dials are concerned, they are affixed for better photographic experience. The beginners would indeed adore the design of the camera as most of the operations can be performed via dials only and one would not have to fret or bother working with dpad. There is a mode dial present to let you work over PASM modes for shooting.

Focus and Face Detection

Nikon Coolpix P530 comes with a contrast-detection autofocus system that consists of subject-tracking, target-finding and face priority functions. The closest focusing distance is 1cm at wide-angle position, good enough for your macro shots. Manual focus involves spot, normal and wide modes.

Lens and Image Stabilization

Nikon Coolpix P530 features NIKKOR glass lens with optical zoom power up to 42x. The zoom length range, in 35mm terms, begins from 24mm-equivalent at wide-angle position and reaches up to 1000mm at telephoto position. The max aperture range is of f/3.0 to f/5.9 across the zoom. There are four ED elements to speak of when it comes to lens construction with 14 elements in 10 groups. The aperture diaphram is of six blades, which in technical terms, is called electronically controlled 6 blade iris. There is another feature called Dynamic Fine Zoom, which is an improved version of digital zoom and gives you an effective 2000mm position zoom (84x) with little compromise on detail. Coming to the image stabilization, it is lens-shift or better put, advanced lens based vibration reduction that fights the camera shake.

Screen and Menus

Nikon CoolPix P530 lets you frame and review your images and videos in two ways; either by 0.2 inches wide LCD panel electronic viewfinder with 201k dots resolution or by fixed 3 inches diagonally wide TFT LCD screen with anti-reflective coating and a resolution of 921k dots. The brightness of the LCD can be extended by 5 levels. The frame coverage of the monitor is 100 percent, both vertically and horizontally, in comparison to the actual picture. Navigating the menu system is quite an easy task thanks to the d-pad at the rear.

Battery

Nikon CoolPix P530 lives on EN-EL5 Lithium-ion rechargeable battery pack, which as per CIPA testing standards, can produce up to 240 frames on full charge. The battery comes with an AC adapter named EH-62A, which can be availed separately. And it takes around 4 hours and 10 minutes to fully charge the camera when using the AC adapter EH-70P.

Video Mode

Nikon CoolPix P530 can record videos in full HD, 1080p resolution with frame size of 1920 x 1080p. In full HD, you can shoot at frame rates of 30p, 60i, 50i, 15 and 12.5p. The last reduced frame rates will give you fast-tracked playback. With HD resolution, the frame size turns to 1280 x 720p and the frame rate choices become 25p, 30p, 50p and 60p. In VGA resolution, the frame size is 640 x 480p and frame rates are 25p, 30p, 100p and 120p. The high frame rate can give you slow motion effect in playback. The compression used by the video is H.264/MP4 AVC wherein, the audio gets recorded in LPCM stereo format.

Sensors

Nikon CoolPix P530 comes with a 1/2.3-inch sized, 16.3 megapixels BSI CMOS (Backside illuminated Complementary Metal Oxide Semi-Conductor) sensor. The camera can shoot at the rate of seven frames per second for one entire second, given the image processor it comes with. The ISO sensitivity range begins from ISO 100 and goes up to ISO 1600. The range though, can be extended to ISO 6400 in modes; aperture, shutter, program and manual. In monochrome only mode, the ISO settings can be extended to ISO 12800.

Pros

  • Sports the super zoom feature
  • Design of the camera is ergonomically impressive
  • Dials have been placed keeping mind the hand movements of the frame-catcher
  • Fixed LCD has resolution of 921k dots and is 3 inches in size, diagonally
  • Videos can be shot in Full HD resolution at frame rates upto 60fps
  • Operation response is prompt

Cons

  • Electronic Viewfinder has 201k dots resolution
  • No provision for external flash
