Nikon Coolpix P600 Point & Shoot Black - Expert Reviews

Overall Review

Nikon Coolpix P600 offers you, in 35mm terms, an astounding zoom range, for it begins from 24mm at wide-angle position and reaches up to 1440mm at telephoto position. The maximum aperture you achieve out of it at wide-angle is f/3.3 over to f/5.6 at telephoto position. The optical mechanism consists of 16 elements in 11 groups. There is an autofocus system based on contrast-detection along with face-priority, target-finding and subject-tracking functions. The minimum focusing distance is 0.5cm at wide-angle position and there is something called the dynamic fine zoom, which can also be called as digital zoom mastered for it takes you even ahead on the zoom scale, yes, in 35mm terms, with dynamic fine zoom, you reach 2880mm. This powerful telephoto does make you achieve great images.

The process of image stabilization is made possible by vibration reduction function based on lens-shift mechanism. At the back of the lens sits the sensor, which is of backside illuminated CMOS type in its profile with a size of 1/2.3-inch and megapixels count of 16.3MP. Along with the processing engine, Nikon Coolpix P600 gives you the liberty to shoot at seven frames per second for full second. The ISO sensitivities range begins from ISO 100 and goes up to ISO 1600. When in manual, aperture, shutter or program mode, you can achieve ISO 6400. And if you want to go higher on this scale, then turn to monochrome only mode for ISO 12800. To your choice's dispense, you get to work on matrix, spot or center-weighted metering, exposure compensation, exposure bracketing and among seven white balance modes. The shutter speeds range from 1/4000 to 15 seconds, though the range actually depends upon ISO and aperture setting.

Sadly, there is no external flash but an inbuilt pop flash with a range of 24 feet at wide-angle and 13 feet at telephoto while setting ISO to auto. There is an electronic viewfinder, which you can use to frame your images and videos. The EVF has a resolution of 201k dots and a 3 inches diagonally wide LCD panel with an anti-reflective coating and resolution of 921k dots. The screen is mounted with swivel mechanism that allows the user to frame odd and imaginable shots. The monitor too can be set facing inwards of the body of the camera to find protection from dust. Coming to videos, the camera can shoot at resolution full HD, 1920 x 1080 aspect pixel. The frame rate of Nikon Coolpix P600 can be either 30 or 60fps. Moreover, 12.5 or 15fps choices will give an accelerated playback and you can turn to VGA resolution for frame rates as high as 120fps or slow mo playback.

The sound is recorded in LPCM stereo format such that all the work done by you is transported to networks, for the camera has an inbuilt Wi-Fi connection. You can shift your work to tablets or smartphone, whichever you desire. The camera, Nikon Coolpix P600 draws its power from EN-EL23 Li-ion rechargeable battery wherein, you can shoot 330 shots as per CIPA testing standards. The connectivity options include USB 2.0 high-speed data, PAL/NTSC standard-definition composite video and type-d micro HDMi high-def video. You can store your work on SD/SDXC/SDHC cards, should the 56MB storage capacity falls short. There are 19 user-friendly scene modes and scene auto selector function present to get the best of the given scene. The moon and the bird watching mode advance on the zoom reach. The camera comes in two colors of Red and Black.

Design and Build Quality

Nikon Coolpix P600 is a well designed camera with plenty of grip that comes shaped and textured ergonomically with a tacky rubber. The camera is mostly plastic as is apparent from the looks of it. The camera is indeed tough and there is little flexibility in its body. The LCD can move though, as you can take shots from different view points. The dial control has been placed smartly, so that shutterbugs will love it. One wouldn't feel the need to depend upon d-pad since the dial would complete most of the operations quite easily via thumb movements. The mode dial makes it easy to switch between PASM shoot modes.

Focus and Face Detection

Nikon Coolpix P600 features a contrast-detection based autofocus system that includes face detection, target finding and subject tracking. Manual focus is in spot, wide and normal mode with the minimum focus distance being 0.5cm at wide-angle position. There are new features like focus peaking that stresses on the edges of the focused area so that they can be viewed on screen. And with the help of it, you can finetune the frame. The smart AF system helps to reduce the waiting time between shots.

Lens and Image Stabilization

Nikon Coolpix P600 features an optical zoom lens up to 60x. At wide-angle position, the zoom length range begins at 24mm and at telephoto position, the range ends at 1440mm, in 35mm terms. The aperture sits at f/3.3 and goes up to f/5.6. The optics consist of 16 elements in 11 groups, there is one super ED and other four ED elements amongst the setup. There are six blades to the aperture diaphragm. Moreover, the device fight influences of camera shake by lens based vibration reduction.

Screen and Menus

Nikon Coolpix P600 comes with an electronic viewfinder, which can be used to frame your shots or use the screen. The viewfinder has 201k dots resolution on a 0.2 inches LCD panel with a screen that is 3 inches wide diagonally. The screen comes with an anti-reflective coating and resolution of 921k dots. The LCD is side-mounted with a tilt swivel mechanism that lets you pick almost any frame that you can imagine. One can also close the monitor to face the body of the camera for more safety. The brightness of the screen can be adjusted in 6 levels. The frame coverage by the LCD is 100 percent, both horizontally and vertically.

Nikon Coolpix P600 relies on EN-EL23 for power with a Li-ion rechargeable battery that produces 330 shots per full charge as per CIPA testing standards. An AC adapter EH-67A for charging also gets shipped.

Video Mode

Nikon Coolpix P600 can record video in Full HD resolution at frame size of 1920 x 1080p wherein, the frame rate can go up to 60fps. You can also shoot at lessened frame rate of 12.5 or 15 frames per second for speedy playback. If you want slow motion playback or frame rate as high as 120fps, you can turn to VGA resolution of 640 x 480p. The compression that the videos use is H.264/MP4 AVC and the sound comes in via LPCM stereo audio.

Nikon Coolpix P600 offers a backside illuminated CMOS sensor of size 1/2.3 inches with an effective megapixels count of 16.1.  The ISO sensitivities begin from ISO 100 and move up to ISO 1600, and can go as high as ISO 6400 when in program, shutter-priority, aperture-priority and manual mode. When you turn to monochrome only mode, the high ISO can be extended to 12800.

  • Comes with super zoom ability
  • Has a satisfying rubber grip
  • Dials have been placed just keeping in mind the agility of the hands of shutterbugs
  • LCD can be moved to almost any state, so taking different shots is easy
  • Videos can be shot in 1080p resolution at frame rates up to 60fps
  • Operation response is quick

  • Electronic Viewfinder is of 201k dots resolution
  • No provision for external flash
