Nikon Coolpix P7100 Digital Camera Black - Expert Reviews
The Nikon Coolpix P7100 is the new addition to Nikon’s comprehensive range of Coolpix compact digital cameras. This camera is the successor of the year old P7000, and is much or less akin to it with a few additions, the main being a rotary multi selector, another being the function button, the new tilting LCD screen, coupled with faster image processing and response times, and an edgy Special Effects mode. The camera owns a 10megapixel sensor together with a mechanically stabilized 7.1X optical zoom lens with a focal range starting from 28mm and ending to a great 200mm and an aperture of f/2.8 – 5.6, all these, with a built-in neutral density filter. The camera produces a sensitivity range of ISO 100 to 6400 and fully supports a RAW file format. In addition to that, you have an optical viewfinder, external flash hot shoe, PASM shooting modes and not to forget, the ability to capture 720p HD movies with enabled stereo sound and a microphone jack. Turn the camera back and you see a 3-inch, 920,000-dot LCD screen, greatly complimenting the beautiful pictures. The camera will no doubt attract enthusiast photographers and is available in only Black. The price is worthy of its given technicalities and is surely a good buy.
Design and Build Quality
The camera in comparison is thick and weighted, ending at an approx 395grams, and echoes the very famous Canon PowerShot G- series in terms of both the dimensions and the weight. The exact measurement of the camera being, 116.3 x 76.9 x 48.0mm does not make it a fit for your palm camera or either your trouser pocket, instead requires a spacious coat pocket or your traditional shoulder bag. We cannot attribute it for being heavy, as it is well structured and feels reasonably lightweight in your hands. It is made of magnesium alloy chassis and has a high level of build quality that you find in Canon’s DSLR range. So if you buy it, you can safely worry about capturing the finest moment rather than having to worry about the camera itself.
Focus and Face Detection
The camera uses the Auto Focus with a 99 point, and can be toggled between auto or manually selectable AF system. There are a couple of auto focusing options, the 1- point AF deals with center spot, normal or either wide. Then there is the subject tracking, all the while active even within video recording mode. The camera is also capable of detecting faces, fixes up your settings, and takes the best possible shots with the appropriate settings involved. All your group photos are meant to come out great with this specific feature.
Lens and Image Stabilization
As mentioned prior, at the front of Nikon P7100 there lies a 7X zoom lens surrounded by a metal ring that can be permitted to be unscrewed for supplementary Nikon attachments such as wide angle or telephoto convertors. The maximum telephoto setting of 200m with this camera is the key difference mark from G12. The range starts from 28mm, making candid shots to large scenery possible to be taken and in a detailed fashion. The maximum aperture for this camera is of f/2.8 at 28mm to f/5.6 at 200mm, all very decent for the camera’s requirement. The camera has a VR I.e. Vibration Reduction image stabilization system, this is simply to prevent camera shakes and thus give you more clear photos. The setback is with the absence of a specific button to turn it on or off, instead it is buried in the setup menu. The system works noticeably well, for without it, the picture is seemingly blurred out. The plus thing is that the VR system does not affect the battery life, so you can just turn it on and leave.
Screen and Menus
As for the screen, Nikon Coolpix P7100 comprises of an impressive 3-inch LCD screen with an impressive high 921k dot resolution, presenting you with sufficient details to preview your photographs and videos. With the feature called ‘Virtual horizon’ you can ensure that your horizons are perfectly level. The screen tilts 81 degrees downwards and 105 degrees upwards, which is especially useful when you have to take a photo above your head or down at the waist level. Positioned on the top-right of the LCD screen is the button navigating the screen display to either displaying all settings, providing a 'clean' screen or switching it off entirely. The menu button is underneath the navigation pad, once you enter the system it is as clear and simple as it can be. All the sub systems/feature will be led after you click the boldly given menu options.
The battery shares its compartment with the SD card and on a full charge, can last for an approximate 350 shots. Given this is ample for shooting over and again, to top that, the battery it uses are the rechargeable Li-ion battery, being very readily available and ideal for travelers and outings.
The camera is capable of recording 720 p movies, at a rate of 24fps. This is 1280 x 720pixels. The advantage you get with this camera is the complete access of 7.1X zoom lens during recording and the autofocus feature working to lock on your subjects as you shoot. You can set up the white balance before recording and the exposure during recording via the AE lock button. Additionally, there is a gain up function that is included to adjust the optional external microphone.
Perfectly portable your Nikon Coolpix P7100 delivers high performance to cater you with best images and movies surprising you with incredible detail and sharpness. Using a 10.1-MP, 1/1.7inches CCD sensor, you experience minimized image noise and vivid images. And offers fast image processing powers so that you can capture spontaneously without having to compromise on the picture quality. The sensor is a great piece to be found in the heart of the camera, as most functions working properly is an example of its brilliance.
