Nikon Coolpix P7800 Point & Shoot Black - Expert Reviews
Nikon Coolpix P7800 is an upgrade to 7700. The selling point of the camera is a 3-inches wide screen that is vari-angle in nature. It uses an RGBW arrangement with white pixels. The screen's brightness can be adjusted to different levels so that you could work outdoors. Even if that comes out as a problematic, you can turn to view inside electronic viewfinder to take your shots. The camera features 7.1x optical zoom which is equal to 28-200mm of focal length, the longest zoom on a digicam till today. You can shoot video in Full HD resolution at frame rate 30fps. RAW and JPEG shoot format have been observed as slow but ultimate image quality and color reproduction is impressive. What results in these quality images is 1/1.7-inch sized back lit CMOS sensor. Overall the digicam's specs are admirable and would work easy in the hands of an beginners.
Design and Build Quality
Nikon Coolpix P7800 has a Q button at the back that stands for Quickness! Yes you can easily set ISO, white balance, my menu, color and quality of image. Upon the mode dial there are three modes that can be customized to manage to your favorite settings. At the top there is an exposure compensation dial and a function button. There is another function at the front as well. There are two control wheel, at the front and the rear also there is a scroll wheel at the back that lets you change shoot modes. The in-built pop flash can be activated by use of manual button to the left of viewfinder. There is a large rubber grip at covers the front and one at the back for your thumb. With this design and metallic body, the ultimate feeling is of solid and robust image device held in hand. The chamber for battery and memory can be seen under the camera, the battery provided here is a rechargeable one and can be used Nikon's entry level DSLRs. The camera comes with a strap, GPS functionality. At the back there is a vari-angle LCD which is too solidly build. Also there is an electronic viewfinder this time at the top right corner which is useful if just at a point you are not able to look into LCD.
Focus and Face Detection
Focus of Nikon Coolpix P7800 is fast enough when you shoot at wide-angle, oppositely at the telephoto end, it becomes quite slower. Time taken from shot to shot is very slow when compared to other modern cameras. When you shoot at RAW and JPEGs formats the experience is sluggish. After 6 shots when in burst mode, the camera stops shooting itself. Macro mode can be achieved via four-way navigational pad. This mode gets you lot closer to the subject. Even when the lens is near to touching the subject, the camera will focus steadily and get you impressive results. You can get very nice close ups. To change an AF point you'd have to press AF button then again for a selectable AF point. After that you can use arrow keys or scroll dial to select AF point. Other focusing modes are Autofocus, Manual, Face Detection, Centre, AF Tracking and Multi.
Lens and Image Stabilization
Nikon Coolpix P7800 comes with bright f/2.0 to f/4.0 optical zoom with zoom levels up to 7.1x. This focal length range in 35mm terms is equal to 28-200mm and is one of the longest zoom lens available over a digicam. Coming to the performance of this lens. Barrel distortion can be observed at wide-angle end whereas at the telephoto end pincushion distortion can be observed. For this Nikon has provided the camera with distortion correction in the menu system. For macro shots, the focal length can be as small as 2cm, meaning good macro shots can be attained. As far image stabilization is concerned, optical image stabilization can be achieved.
Screen and Menus
Nikon Coolpix P7800 houses a RGBW screen with brightness levels so that you can take the camera shoot in outdoor environment easily. The screen is 3-inch wide and as stated with RGBW arrangement along with white pixels. If the screen doesn't help much in extreme situation like noon time sunlight, then you can use electronic viewfinder. The menu system isfairly laid out and navigation is easier. The advanced settings include manual switching of ND filter on and off. The color of options for imagery are neutral, vivid, standard, black and white. You can also set contrast, sharpness and saturation.
Nikon Coolpix P7800 runs on rechargeable Li-ion battery EN-EL14. As per CIPA testing standards you can achieve 330 shots. The same battery is shared by other Nikon DSLRs D3100, D3200, D5100 and D5200. The battery is delivered with the terminal cover and charger MH-24. The compartment for battery and memory can be found beneath the camera.
Nikon Coolpix P7800 shoots video at Full HD, 1080p resolution at 30fps frame rate. You can record sounds in stereo format and use optical zoom while recording video but the camera shall struggle for autofocus in continuous form. Other video resolutions/frame sizes you can achieve are 1920x1080, which can be shot at 25fps as well. 1280x720 pixels can be shot at same frame rate choices 30 or 25fps, this resolution is also called HD. VGA resolution, 640x480 can be shot at frame rates, 30fps/120fps.
Nikon Coolpix P7800 features back-illuminated CMOS type 12 megapixels sensor. The width of the pixels is 4000 and height is 3000. The size of the sensor is 1/1.7 inches and the aspect ratio is 4:3 and 16:9. The sensor is of the same size that Canon is offering yet smaller RX100 1 and 2 by Sony which have become quite popular in these times. Nikon's P7700 also features the same sensor. Coming to the performance of sensor, beginning from 80 and going up to 400, the noise is low. ISO800 brings with it the noise. As you touch ISO1600 the detail goes down with the noise increment. ISO 3200 shows a higher level of the same. ISO6400 images are useless.
