Nikon Coolpix S2900 comes with a 20.1MP CCD sensor that can record pictures and videos with a sensitivity of up to ISO3200. It is accompanied by a 5x optical zoom lens with a 35mm equivalent zoom range of 26-130mm. The camera has been developed for use without creating furrows on the forehead. Nikon's scene recognition system is called scene auto selector here that automatically configures the camera with the best possible settings by keeping your subject in the frame. There are 8 special effects given by the company to filter the pictures for creativity. With the smart portrait system, one can easily shoot pictures of family and friends.
The additional feature that the camera provides is - giving warning when the subject is blinking and taking a snap when the subject is smiling. If there are any imperfections, then it can be retouched by the retouch options present within the camera. One can soften the skin and do some digital makeup via the Glamor retouch options. Overall, the camera is thin and vibrant, can be used smoothly and its images are well exposed. The life of its battery is good enough and one can make use of the clever tools for processing photos and for portrait-orientated pictures. However, on the flip side, the camera does not contain any optical image stabilization feature.
Design and Build Quality
Nikon Coolpix S2900 camera is clad in a nice and slim body. It only weighs 119 grams and can be easily called a ready to shoot camera given its light weight. Also, it can easily slip into the pocket of your jacket alongside any other smart device. The downside here is that there is a thumb grip at the back, which is the same as the one seen on IXUS cameras by Canon.
The buttons at the sides of S2900 are of good size such that one can easily press them without using the nail of the thumb. The quality of the build is good, for there is no flex or weakness to the plastic case. The screen is 2.7 inches wide at the back with a resolution of 230k dots. It is of LCD type. Being a typical compact camera, it offers pixelated reception. The resolution of the screen is low, the viewing angle is quite restricted and its contrast and brightness are quite low too.
Focus and Face Detection
Nikon Coolpix S2900 provides users with the following focus modes - Centre, Autofocus, Face Detection and AF Tracking. The minimum focusing distance is of 10cm and the speed for autofocusing is not that great, save only under good light conditions. And under low light conditions, the camera becomes quite slow and takes two or more seconds to focus. To focus for macro shots, the lens can get as close as 5cm but that happens only when it is set to wide-angle.
Lens and Image Stabilization
Nikon Coolpix S2900 delivers a 5x optical zoom with a maximum aperture of f/3.2 – f/6.5 and a focal length equalling to 26mm at the wide-angle end and 130mm at the telephoto position, in 35mm terms. At both ends of the zoom range, there is no visible distortion. And across the entire frame, the sharpness remains the same and there is minor softening at the corners. Purple fringing and chromatic aberration can be a problem at times and can be seen clearly at the boundaries with high-contrast. Importantly, there is no image stabilization.
Screen and Menus
Nikon Coolpix S2900 uses a tried and tested menu layout, which is indeed simple and easy to remember. Since the number of features are quite limited, the options become few and easy to comprehend. The screen at the back is 2.7-inch wide with a resolution of 230k dots. The viewing angle is not high and the display too is quite pixelated. The resolution of the screen is low along with brightness and contrast.
Nikon Coolpix S2900 comes with an EN-EL19 battery pack that allows for 250 shots per full charge. This rechargeable Li-ion battery has been provided by Nikon and this time around, it hasn't resorted to the AA batteries. One can easily manage to get 266 shots by using less flash. Also, inside the box, comes a charging AC adapter named EH-69P.
Nikon Coolpix S2900 can record videos at a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. Although, one cannot avail of the optical zoom while recording videos, one can use the digital zoom but this cuts down on sharpness. The other video resolutions that the camera can record are 640 x 480 pixels (VGA) and 320 x 240 pixels (QVGA ). The videos are recorded at a frame rate of 30fps but without any stereo sound recording.
Nikon Coolpix S2900 comes with a 20MP CCD sensor having pixel's width and height of 4320 units and 3240 units respectively. The aspect ratios used by the 1/2.3-inch sized sensor are 4:3 and 16:9. Between the ISO range of ISO80-200, the camera works well and produces fairly good images. Though some graining can be observed here, it is but typical for this kind of camera.
At ISO 400, the image quality goes down seemingly and blotches of color can still be seen in a number of areas. At ISO800, more noise can be observed and the entire imaging takes on a bit of green tinge, though the noise levels are still at an acceptable level. ISO1600 shows increase in both color blotches and graining. And at ISO3200, the performance is somewhat the same and the images are recorded only at 4MP.
