Nikon Coolpix S31 Point & Shoot Digital Camera Black - Expert Reviews
Nikon's website declares S31 as a family camera, although by the appearance of it seems more of like a children's camera. What more the camera is known for, is the waterproof, shockproof and dustproof design. The power button is slightly recessed and there are big buttons for capturing videos and photos. To locate the optical zoom up to 3x might be a tougher job and can be accessed by pressing down and up the navigation pad. There is a playback right below wherein, the four buttons that lie on the left boundary of the screen, that are aligned with the on screen icons, control all the other features. The scene presets are a few decorative frames and creative filters. The conventional controls are limited to self-timer, flash, and resolution. Housed among the scene preset options is the exposure, but it becomes little tougher to handle exposure stops, therefore the use of the feature may not come much handy. The camera is shipped in five colors namely, Blue, Pink, Yellow, Brown, and White. It features a 10.1megapixel CCD image sensor, though the provision to take images at RAW resolution has been taken off here. With DPI 300, you are able enough to take out prints of size 8 x 10-inch. The S31 also evades storing huge files generated by many cameras currently. Coming to the ISO, it ranges from 80 to 1600 ISO.
The focal range, of 35mm equivalents is 29 to 87mm with the maximum aperture of f/3.3 to f/5.9; these specs for the typical shutterbugs would do just fine. The LCD monitor is 2.7inches wide diagonally though one can observe that these days the LCD monitors on compact cameras are at least 3inches wide yet having 2.7inches wide screen is not much of a worry. The Flash sits right above the optical path of imaging with the camera, making it closer to the strobe, the user must be careful about the red eye effect that may fall upon the images coming through this camera. Apart from the stills, you can catch HD videos. There is a dedicated video buttons for catching videos at 720p resolution at 30fps. You can put on the same filter effects on both videos and stills. Your work can be stored on the digital cards namely, SDHC and SDXC. It can also be transferred using USB 2.0 high-speed data connection. The upsetting point is that it has an internal memory of 26MB, so you can only take some very important shots should you have forgotten the SD card at home. The Nikon Coolpix S31 Waterproof Point & Shoot derives its power from the proprietary EN-EL12 lithium-ion rechargeable battery. The shipped box includes both battery and charger wherein, on a single charge you can take 260 shots.
Design and Build Quality
The Nikon Coolpix S31 Waterproof Point & Shoot is rounded, simple shaped, and child-friendly. The body is made of glossy plastic, which has a supreme lightweight feel and where the buttons respond with a noticeable click. Underwater, the experience of using the camera is easy, since the buttons are large. The shutter has a satisfying half-press and full-press response. When the auto focus is working, you actually do not get to know however, sooner or later, it tells you that it has a lock. The zoom is controlled using the down and up arrows via a conventional four-way pad. The camera has four buttons on the left of the screen. The screen resolution is fairly low at 2,30,000, yet, to view the same in varying light conditions is not a sad experience. From switching on the first photo, going from shot to shot, focus speed etc., the camera is moderately responsive.
Focus and Face Detection
The minimum focusing distance is 5cm and there are two kinds of focusing modes namely, autofocus, and face detection. Autofocus can be achieved while video recording as well. Users may find that autofocus is slow, pressing the shutter and catching photo shall take two seconds. But, the slow autofocus may in turn help to avoid the cam shake in Nikon Coolpix S31 Waterproof Point & Shoot.
Lens and Image Stabilization
The lens is an optical zoom lens of up to 3x zoom. The focal range (35mm equivalent) is 29mm – 87mm and the maximum aperture is f/3.3 – f/5.9. Nikon Coolpix S31 Waterproof Point & Shoot has a good control over purple fringing; the minimum focusing distance is 5cm that means you can catch good macro shots sufficiently closer. Image stabilization can also be availed but it is not of optical nature.
Screen and Menus
The screen as stated is 2.7inches wide LCD, and in differing light conditions, the view is acceptable, which means the shot composition can be done. Nikon Coolpix S31 Waterproof Point & Shoot menus depict large text, bold, colorful icons. The buttons on the left hand side of the cam can choose the options in the menu. Most of the users find that directional buttons on the right are rarely used for menu navigation, but by the row of four unlabeled buttons to the left of the LCD. The prompts are visible next to each of the buttons and on every menu screen. The functions of course change as the menu changes. Overall, the menu system is dead easy. The GUI for shooting modes is brightly colored and themed backdrop. These modes include food, macro, underwater, fireworks etc. The scene auto selector does the scene configuration for you when needed.
A proprietary EN-EL12 lithium-ion rechargeable battery is what you get as a powerhouse for Nikon Coolpix S31 Waterproof Point & Shoot. Under CIPA ratings, you get 240 shots in one charge that means a long way to go before you run out of charge.
The video gets recorded in 720p HD resolution at 30fps. While recording video, the optical zoom is not available but you can use digital zoom instead. The format at 720p is 1280 x 720 and at VGA is 640 x 480. The sad point is that you do not get the stereo sound recording in Nikon Coolpix S31 Waterproof Point & Shoot.
The sensor is an effective 10.1megapixels with a CCD image sensor. With a maximum image size of 3648 x 2736 and sensor size of 1/3 inches, the Nikon Coolpix S31 Waterproof Point & Shoot has an aspect ratio of 4:3 in.
