Nikon Coolpix S3200 Point & Shoot Digital Camera Black - Expert Reviews
Nikon Coolpix S3200 is a family style compact camera featuring a 16 megapixels sensor and 6x optical zoom. The camera has a slim body with a reasonably low price that makes it ideal for a casual user. It is available in the market in vibrant colours of Red, Blue, White and Black. To make memories even more memorable, the camera boasts of giving the clearest images with its e-VR, the Electronic Vibration Reduction system. Nikon Coolpix S3200 has a 35mm equivalent of 26-156mm zoom lens and an ISO of 80-3200. The camera has a 2.7 inches diagonally wide screen with a 230K dot LCD system. It has many advanced features like smart portrait and retouch menu and requires a minimum focusing distance of 5cm and obviously not as efficient as other DSLRs.
Design and Build Quality
Nikon Coolpix S3200 is an extremely small camera with a metallic body and fine finish. The camera is easy to handle, small and light but lacks a good grip. It sports a 2.7 inches wide LCD screen and gives bright clear images even in bright light and does not hamper viewing in a dark tunnel either. The arrangement of buttons is in the typical manner and comes with a specialised video recording button on the rear. the navigation system is easy and similar to all its counterpart with easy menu usage. The problem users will face is in viewing the words engraved on the buttons in the same colour. The dimensions of the camera are 3.5-inch x 1.5-inch x 2.6-inch. This 16 megapixels camera has a zoom lens on the front with a flash on the top and a joy rotator for zoom adjustment. The power button is on the top of the camera near the zoom scroll button.
Focus and Face Detection
Nikon Coolpix S3200 has a 3X zoom lens with a focal length equivalent of 35mm to 115mm and automatic focal adjustment. The minimum focusing range is of 11.8 inches and comes with a motorised zoom adjustment. The camera has a built-in flash with different adjustable flash modes like slow, synchro, fill in mode, auto mode, red eye reduction and flash off mode. The focus shutter response takes around 0.5 seconds and gives images with good clarity and high definition. Nikon Coolpix S3200 has a TTL contrast detection system and face detection function too.
Lens and Image Stabilization
Nikon Coolpix S3200 comes with a special wide angle 6X NIKKOR zoom lens and vibration reduction image stabilisation system - a special attraction of this launch. It helps you take beautified images with great clarity. Fit for the casual user, it allows you to take outstanding group shots and portrait like close ups. The navigation system allows you to move easily through different adjustment modes for flash, focus and gives an automatic perfect image stabilisation.
Screen and Menus
Nikon S3200 has a 2.7 inches wide LCD screen, which is not rotatable and remains fixed. The glare is low, thus allowing easy viewing in different intensities of light. The screen is not touch sensitive and displays drop out menus that can be navigated through by using the navigation pad on the back next to the screen, like in all typical cameras. The grip is not a good feature of the camera, though some dots for thumb are provided. The menu is easy to use and simple to understand. It gives easy directions to either set different specifications manually or set them to the Auto mode, particularly for amateur shutterbugs.
The menu has light sensitivity adjustment from ISO 50- ISO 100 and 256 exposure metering zones, which can be set to automatic. A variety of shooting programs can be selected from like the dawn/dusk, sports, landscape, portrait, beach/snow, night portrait, fireworks, sunset, close up, museum and many more. In the smart portrait mode, which includes smile timer, the pictures can be made blink-proof and skin softening can be done along with red eye adjustment. Special effects can also be added to the images like black and white picture, sepia and cool. Picture white balance is also adjustable through the drop down window menu and can be chosen from amongst the presets and set to automatic or customised.
The camera runs on 2 AA batteries that are included in the pack and can be charged via USB also. The battery has a CIPA rating of 220 shots. The DC power cable requires about 2 hours 30 minutes for full charge. The camera pack includes a strap, a help booklet and a USB cable besides the camera itself. The pictures can easily be transferred to the PC using an USB cable. Nikon Coolpix S3200 does not have any direct net connectivity, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth support but has a SD card slot for expanding the external memory. The internal storage is about 14.5MB. There is a provision for direct video audio output with the provided cables.
Nikon Coolpix S3200 has a mechanical and charge coupled electronic shutter with a high shutter speed. There is a dedicated video button for quick video recording at 30 frames per second in high resolution of 720 pixels. The video recorded can be played back on the screen or on TV/PC by using the audio video output. There are special effects in this camera that includes soft, choosing color, high and low key, high contract, monochrome and lot more. It has automatic and manual exposure modes that let you capture effortlessly. After capturing the videos, you can watch them on your personal TV or laptop by simply connecting the camera to it.
