Nikon Coolpix S6500 Point & Shoot Digital Camera Black - Expert Reviews

Overall Review

Nikon featured a new Coolpix camera at the start of the year and named it S6500, the digicam combines Wi-Fi connectivity with an optical zoom lens with zooming up to 12x. The camera has a 16million pixels sensor that makes the camera competent enough to vie for its place in the smartphone cameras market. Since the 16MP back illuminated CMOS sensor is quite larger than a typical smartphone sensor, achieving greater image quality becomes apparent even in low-lit conditions. Another important feature is the aperture of 4.5-54mm f/3.1-6.5 lens, so the 12x zoom gets justified here. If we talk on its 35mm equivalents, the lens has a focal range of 25-300mm. And to reduce the shake of the camera, even at the longest zoom extension, the camera is complemented by Nikon's VR (Vibration Technology).

The Wi-Fi lets you connect with the smart device or tablet. You can even use the device as a remote viewfinder to control the camera and catch self-portrait or wildlife snaps. The images get stored as JPEG files and can be chosen from several scene modes. Since Nikon Coolpix S6500 Advance Point And Shoot is a consumer-level camera, it does not come with an exposure in manual mode. The brightness of the exposure can be adjusted using the exposure compensation feature. The ISO sensitivity can be selected between 125 and 1600, and when you turn on the auto ISO, the camera itself selects ISO 3200.
All the composition is done using the 3inches wide 460k dot TFT LCD screen at the back. The screen's contrast is good and the colors are pleasing. An anti-reflective coating works on the screen quite well. If the daylight is too harsh then it may become little difficult to view the screen. There are five levels of brightness to the screen.

Design and Build Quality

The Nikon Coolpix S6500 Advance Point And Shoot has an all metal compact body. It is fairly lightweight and ideal to carry in your pocket. The 3inches wide screen has a resolution of 460k dots and is viewable under varying light conditions and not in extreme light conditions. The set of physical controls is quite standard for a compact camera that comes with an on/off switch, zoom rocker over the top, and shutter release. At the rear, there is a dpad with an OK button in the middle, as well as, a movie record button. There are scene mode, display, back and menu buttons. The interface is easier to navigate. After you have taken a shot, there is an option that pops up allowing you to apply quick effects to the images taken. Some of the effects are pop, selective color and toy camera. To use Wi-Fi, you would have to download the wireless mobile utility app to your smart device that runs on iOS or Android, as it would help you to download the pictures from the camera, and share and edit them. The remote release use is another exciting feature wherein, the preview appears on the mobile and you can set a timer or control the zoom at the same time. The other info that comes up on screen are aperture, shutter speed, number of shots and battery life.

Focus and Face Detection

In Nikon Coolpix S6500 Advance Point And Shoot, the minimum focusing distance is 8cm wherein, you can achieve simple macro shots. The focus mode is only Auto. The AF is slow and that is the sad part here. Right above the lens, the AF-assist/timer lamp sits. The Xenon flash sits near the top left. The AF remains enabled even at slow motion mode and movie recording. The face detection feature is present undoubtedly and you get face priority AF and smile shutter as well.

Lens and Image Stabilization

Nikon Coolpix S6500 Advance Point And Shoot has a 16MP back-illuminated CMOS sensor that has an optical zoom up to 12x. The 35mm equivalent of the focal range is 25-300mm. The Vibration Reduction is of lens-shift type, which keeps your images steady. With the given lens, the camera gives out decent details at both ends of the lenses. The softness does appear in corners, as well some purple fringing in contrasting regions. The lens max aperture is f/3.1 – f/6.5.

Screen and Menus

After you have taken your shots in Nikon Coolpix S6500 Advance Point And Shoot, you can enter in the retouch menu the involves color and cross screen. The entire menu system is easy to read and navigate through. The screen is a 3inches wide 460k dot LCD screen.

There is one rechargeable Li-Ion battery EN-EL19 that comes with the Nikon Coolpix S6500 Advance Point And Shoot. As per the CIPA rating, 150 shots can be taken with full charge. The capacity of the battery is just 700mAh, so to take the camera over for trekking may not be a very good idea.

Video Mode

The video gets recorded in Full HD, at 1080p resolution. You can use the optical zoom while recording video at 30fps. The video can also be recorded at 720p resolution. The sound recording is in stereo format in Nikon Coolpix S6500 Advance Point And Shoot.

The image sensor is a CMOS type 16MP with pixels (W) 4608 x pixels (H) 3456. The size of the sensor is 1/2.3 inches. The aspect ratio can be chosen from among 16:9, 4:3 in Nikon Coolpix S6500 Advance Point And Shoot.
