Nikon D300S SLR Body - Expert Reviews
Nikon D300S SLR has come out as a new flagship-imaging device to the company's DX format range. The DLSR inherits a lot from D300, including, 12.3MP CMOS sensor, a tough enough body, a large viewfinder, 3 inches wide VGA monitor, a robust 51 AF system, HDMI port and a Live View. D300s sports HD video recording mode, continuous still shoot at 7fps and dual compact flash/SD card slots. The camera also flaunts the quiet shooting mode, a quite significant shoot mode for many plus virtual horizons within LiveView. D300s can capture video at 24fps wherein, you can choose from among the three resolutions to shoot with namely, 320x216, 640x424, and 1280x720pixels. Video gets stored in motion JPEG AVI format that may not feel as effective as H.264, yet to edit it is an easy task. There is an inbuilt mic and provision for external mic as well, making D300S the first DSLR to feature an external mic. When set to tripod mode, the AF gets on work but it takes a few seconds. Also, you can edit video clips within the camera. The mic input is quite an exciting one for it enhances the audio quality greatly. The new option named Q on the release dial triggers Quiet Shoot mode. It vastly reduces the sound of mirror flip and is perfect to shoot in environments that require quietness, like interiors or in wild. All your work gets secured on dual memory card slots; one for compact flash and other for SD. For instant backup, you can have images duplicated to the other card, or have JPEG file to one card of an image and RAW file to another. As mentioned above, D300s inherits the best of D300 like 12.3MP sensor produces the cleanest and the lowest noise image in its group. The large bright viewfinder lets you have 100% coverage. The 3 inches wide VGA screen is superb in itself. The build quality and ergonomics are superb too.
Design and Build Quality
Just below the Nikon D300S SLR logo, is a microphone grill. At the front, that is the only thing that makes this device different from D300. There is a door on the left that also covers an external stereo mic jack and an HDMI connector. There is A/V out port that backs monaural playback for video on simple analog TVs. On the right side, you have a sliding card access door that allows for the two SD cards namely, compact flash and micro drives. At the top, you have the release mode dial and setting for the new quiet shutter release. At the back, there are info buttons, LiveView, center of multi-selector disk and a speaker grill. There is a protective plastic LCD cover too. At the bottom, you have an EN-EL3e battery; the compartment to the battery is compatible with MB-D10 battery. The body is made up of magnesium alloy with textured rubber. The physical controls are intuitive. The dust reduction system has been provided for the body of the camera.
Focus and Face Detection
Nikon D300S SLR has one of the finest AF systems in the market. The contrast detects AF in movie and the Live View mode is little faster than most DSLRs. The camera utilizes the 51-focus point system. Shooting moving objects with D300s is quite easy. You cannot avail of AF while recording the video, you have to first let AF work on the subject, and then, you can begin your shooting. For that, you'd have to keep the distance between the subject and camera, a constant, else you would lose the focus. You can lock focus via several methods such as you can half press the shutter button and then fire the shutter over the subject or you can press the AFL/AEL button to lock focus even if the shutter is released. This lets you compose the photo again. The AF On button acts the same way as half-pressing the shutter. You can also avail of the face detection feature.
Lens and Image Stabilization
Via the standard Nikon F lens, mount D300s accommodates a wide range of NIKKOR lenses. As stated above, the camera can support almost all older lenses. There is feature for image stabilization as well in Nikon D300S SLR.
Screen and Menus
In Nikon D300S SLR, when you press the menu button, you confront an interface comprising of playback, shooting, custom, settings, setup, customizable my menu and retouch, and down the left side. The lower quarter of the screen comes divided into two horizontal bars that show details of shoot menu and custom settings banks, long exposure, high ISO, Active D lighting, picture control, color space, AEL/AFL, depth-of-field and fn buttons. From setup menu, you can also access, Virtual Horizon mode. Luckily, there is an option in the setup menu that allows you to enter an artist's and copyright details that can then be tagged onto images.
Nikon D300S SLR uses the EN-EL3e battery and makes quite a good use of it. An entire day of shoot without running out of battery is possible. The camera gives detailed info on the condition of the battery (shown by five segment icon) and on the charge remaining (inside the menu). Under CIPA ratings, you can have 950 shots on a single charge excluding the use of Live View and video shoot. If you are to use the latter, then expect a lot less battery use. The compartment for battery is located quite far from the tripod socket to allow room for changing battery even while mounted on the tripod.
Nikon D300S SLR offers a resolution of 720p at 24fps. The aspect pixel options you can choose from are; 1280 x 720, 640 x 424, 320 x 216. Audio recording is at mono when using the internal mic, and when using the external unit, it turns to stereo. Videos get stored in Motion JPEG AVI format. At max, you can have HD recording up to 20min. While shooting, you can avail the contrast-detection AF by setting LiveView mode to Tripod along with in-camera video editing options as well. It is possible to set both ends and start point over a current clip. The result can be secured on either CF or SD. The full-length video remains unaltered up to 5min.
