Nikon D3300 DSLR VR II Kit AF-S18-55mm Black - Expert Reviews

Overall Review

Nikon D3300 SLR (18-55 MM) Lens camera is a step ahead from Nikon D3200 as it offers a 24.2MP sensor with no OLPF and can shoot at 1080p resolution at 60fps. The absence of optical low pass filter causes the camera to attain the sharpest of shots and the EXPEED 4 image processor causes the burst mode speed to be of 5fps. The ISO range in the camera can be extended up to ISO 25600. This is the most lightweight compact DSLR till now and its average battery life is of 700 shots as per the CIPA testing standards, thanks to the presence of an EN-EL14a battery.

The AF system is of 11-point and the focus points are highlighted in the optical viewfinder. Also, there is a button at the rear that upgrades LiveView. The camera is compatible with the full range of NIKKOR DX-format lenses and Nikon speedlights (entry-level). The active D-lighting function helps in high-contrast lighting conditions and the presence of the retouch menu lets you to enhance the photos taken by you. The options involve - Resize, Straighten and Quick Retouch and the effects involve - Colour Sketch, Selective Colour and Miniature Effect.

Design and Build Quality

Nikon D3300 SLR (18-55 MM) Lens camera comes with a large rubber grip for safe handling and a rubber grip at the back for thumb support. The camera feels quite solid and well built. Also, the side access to the memory card can be attained making it easy to change it even when the camera is mounted on a tripod. The camera weighs only 410 grams and measures 124×98×75.5mm in dimensions thus making it, one of the lightest DSLRs available.

Focus and Face Detection

Nikon D3300 SLR (18-55 MM) Lens camera has three focusing modes; manual, autofocus and face detection. In the optical viewfinder, the 11 point AF system has occupied its space. The LiveView gets enabled by a button at the back. The focus points are of red colour when active with a cross-type sensor. The optical viewfinder comes with a soft rubber wound around for a good eyepiece experience. With the aid of AF assist light, the camera can focus in low light conditions too. The ISO performance in low light is not a commendable one. Against the optical viewfinder, LiveView is much slower with focus and shutter response, noticeably if you come with digicam experience. For better imaging experience, using optical viewfinder is a must.

Lens and Image Stabilization

Nikon D3300 SLR (18-55 MM) Lens camera comes with a new lens kit. And when you turn on the auto correction, slight barrel distortions at wide-angle and pincushion at the telephoto end get taken care of. There is no vignetting as such to be worried about. Chromatic aberration and purple fringing would only be seen if observed very closely, at the far corners of the image, under high contrast. Speaking of corners of an image, there can be some drop in the sharpness but the rest of the portions stay sharp enough. For even better sharpness, you can change settings, record files in RAW form and use a prime lens. The macro performance of the lens is good enough, although even for macro shots, manual focus is advised. There is no effective image stabilization.

Screen and Menus

Nikon D3300 SLR (18-55 MM) Lens camera offers a 3 inches wide LCD with a resolution of 921k dots. The menu system can be quite odd to use till you become habitual of it. Why so? Because you can use the function button along with the control wheel at the back to change ISO or can use the control wheel along with exposure compensation change as well. Now, if you press the drive mode, you can make changes with the control wheel along with the 4 way pad and OK button. The I button can also help in changing settings and options, thus letting you alter the settings via rear screen and keeping you away from entering the menu hassle. There is an inbuilt guide mode to help rookies and novices and the 4Way controller cannot be assigned any functions. The menus have been neatly laid out with each section coded and colored.

Nikon D3300 SLR (18-55 MM) Lens camera comes with a 1230mAh EN-EL14a battery, which provides the CIPA testing standard rating of 700 shots per full charge.

Video Mode

Nikon D3300 SLR (18-55 MM) Lens camera can record videos at numerous frame rates of 24, 25, 50 and 60p. The inbuilt microphones are of mono type along with the presence of a microphone socket to it. The audio choices include, wind filteration, mic level settings, off, manual and auto. This very mode can be used along with the manual controls as well. When you turn to continuous AF, it might feel slow in video mode, but overall, the quality doesn't really suffer. However, sadly, the noise of focus gets caught by the camera though the vibration reduction system does fine.

Nikon D3300 SLR (18-55 MM) Lens camera comes with a 24.2 megapixels CMOS type sensor of APS-C size. The aspect ratio remains 3:2 and the camera comes with an extended ISO range that reaches up to ISO 25600. ISO 100 and ISO 200 reflect negligible noise, with ISO 400 and ISO 800, there is a slight increase in noise, at ISO 1600, you step a little higher with noise. Till this level, the detailing to the image is quite better. At ISO 3200, the quality drops slightly yet results are acceptable. At ISO 6400, images can be kept in the device for use. At ISO 12800, though noise reigns yet the color reproduction remains good. Beyond this, at ISO 25600, both detail and color get dropped. The night mode turns you over to monochrome mode.

  • Nikon D3300 SLR (18-55 MM) Lens camera comes with a 2 years warranty
  • There is no optical low pass filter, so you get even sharper images
  • Noise performance is remarkable
  • Lens kit performs well enough
  • There is a mic socket as well
  • Burst mode speed is of 5fps
  • ISO range covers up to 25600 equivalent
  • Easy panorama mode stitches quality images
  • Printed guide comes with the box

  • Nikon D3300 SLR (18-55 MM) Lens camera doesn't feature Wi-Fi
  • Price is higher than D5200
  • No auto HDR
  • Auto exposure bracketing is not available
  • Both shutter response and live view focus are very slow
