Nikon D3S DSLR Camera Body - Expert Reviews

Overall Review

Before writing anything about this professional camera let me make one thing clear to you, this device is simply a beast, a humungous monster of a device. Nikon D3S is a 12megapixel full frame Digital SLR device from Nikon, one that can powerfully boasts of amazingly high sensitivity range of measure ISO 200 to ISO 12,800, and can be easily and efficiently expanded to an incredibly huge 102,400 ISO all the way. The device succeeds the highly popular full frame pro DSLR and as Nikon proudly says “the first Nikon FX body capable of HD video recording. The device strongly inherits specs like rugged build, weatherproofing, large and bright viewfinder, high-resolution rear screen, dual memory card slots, 51-point AF module, 9-fps continuous shooting speed, amazing range of customization, and an overall efficient options that once marked its precursor. Nikon D3S also adds up to its arsenal, many small new features that were earlier overlooked in the full frame DSLRs such as the automatic sensor cleaning, raw conversation in camera, a dedicated Live View, and info buttons. Also, there is a Quiet shooting mode and a stereo microphone input. There are some other enhancements against Nikon D3 which include a large buffer, a 1.2x crop mode which is new, a new bracketing option for Active D-lighting and an amazing new Vignette Control feature which somehow brings down the noticeable corner shading common alongside the full-frame digital devices.

Design and Build Quality

Almost each and every professional device from Nikon from the beginning that is, back to 1988 looks absolutely monstrous. Nikon D3S is exceptional, a huge device with a majestic aura. The exact dimensions, the ergonomics of the device at 159.5mm x 157mm x 87.5mm tells you the entire story of how big the device is, and yes, it weighs 1.25kg. When you look at the specs you actually get repelled by it but hold the device in your hands, for the camera’s weight distribution is so damn good and so adequately and perfectly balanced that it very much feels quite like a normal device mounted right on your hands. Obviously the type of lens you mate this device with, plays a very unique part in the weight balance of the device- by default there is the AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 G lens which Nikon packs, this certainly does not add much flab to the device and neither does it sort of spoil the balance of the device. Yes, if you actually mate it with something like a 400 mm f/2.8 that would certainly be a different story. The body shape and dimensions of our device match Nikon D3 very highly and most of the controls are actually on the same location too.

Focus and Face Detection

Nikon D3S’s another star feature is its 51 point AF module, this actually is unchanged from its predecessor Nikon D3, and is simply a class apart to use. Thankfully, enough AF points are simply not carved in the focusing screen, the advantage of this is that you only get to see the one in use currently, and goes a long way right towards avoiding the viewfinder clutter. Now, the procedure of selecting AF point is actually done by way of a eight-way pad, and is done so unless the focus selector lock is selected in the L that is, Locked position or Auto Area AF is selected. Like the precursor, Nikon D3S also flaunts a single point and a dynamic AF area option. In the latter mode, focus point can be selected very easily manually, but once that is taken care of, Nikon D3S attempts to track down the subject even if the selected focus point is left. The most important question is the number of focus points; the answer to this is that it can be selected from 9, 21, and 51 via a customized setting. If the 51-point option is selected, the subject will be tracked all across the screen and will be done from the color information delivered by the 1005pixel RGB metering sensor.

Lens and Image Stabilization

By default, the lens mounted on Nikon D3S is Nikkor AF-S 50mm f/1.4 G lens, which is in itself is a very wonderful device. However there are a widespread range of lenses that you can use such as Type G or D AF NIKKOR in which, all functions are supported (PC Micro-NIKKOR does not support some functions), then there is DX NIKKOR where again, all the functions are supported except the FX-format (36x24)/1.2x (30×20)/5:4 (30x24) and many more.

Screen and Menus

Nikon D3S comes with a magnificent a screen, which is a high-resolution LCD monitor of 3-inch, this while sporting a 921,000 – dot resolution with the capability of 170 – degree viewing angle. The screen is pretty well rounded within its attributes; it is bright and vivid for your previewing and reviewing purposes. Additionally, Nikon D3S can also enlarge your playback up to 27X; this is for quick and accurate image confirmation. For professionals alike who deem precision in their work, this is apt. The LCD in addition, is covered with a scratch resistant tempered glass which is, as the company says, ’individually calibrated and fine tuned at the factory to deliver consistent performance’.

Battery

Now, one of the main reasons of the considerable Hulk like figure of the device is the presence of an unique integrated and hence, a non-removable portrait grip, which somehow also accounts for the huge 2500mAh EN-EL4a Li-Ion battery. Ok, easily here, this battery is unparalleled, if the claims are right because we did not get chance to test it. The battery can claim to be a stunner, hold your breath, 4,200 shots in a single charge (at room temperature and without using live view or VR lens). For more traditionalists amongst you, there is the availability of 110 rolls of 36 exposure films that you have managed to squeeze out 38 frames in each and every roll. The sad part is that we did not have that much time to take that many photos to provide a justification to the claim, but we never had to recharge the battery of Nikon D3S in one month time!! That should simply say something for itself.

Video Mode

Probably, first of its kind in Nikon full frame DSLRs, Nikon D3S sports one key advantage, and quite a big one at that, is its ability to shoot movies. And although, the battery life of Nikon D3S is unparalleled, it is the 720p HD movie recording that this device can do at 24fps, which makes up for the one thing that the successors in the name of Nikon D3 and Nikon D3x lagged. All credits to a larger sensor, Nikon D3S can very easily produce very cleaner footage at much high sensitivity setting that in turn, allows one to use even more sophisticated and better depth of field control. Much like Nikon D300s, Nikon D3s allow you to use the AF feature while filming a video, obviously by pressing the AF-ON, but then everything comes with a package, this is actually very slow and hunts way too much to actually call it a useful feature. For beginners and amateurs in photography, this is our advice that you choose a smaller aperture and rely completely on the depth of the field, so as to acquire a sharp footage of the video you acquire wherein, we are in no position to advise anything to the professions and they will want a third party accessory to go with smooth focus pulling.

Sensors

Nikon D3S SLR works on a 12megapixel 1/2.3 inch CMOS sensor, which is truly capable of delivering the sharpest of images.
