Nikon D4S DSLR Black - Expert Reviews
Nikon D4S is an upgrade to its predecessor, the D4 and comes with a number of 'upgraded' features. The ISO range begins from ISO 100 to ISO 25600 and can be extended to ISO 50 and ISO 409600 respectively. The device sports a 16.2 megapixels FX sensor along with an EXPEED 4 image processing engine. The low light performance of the device has been improved over its predecessor and it offers features such as localized noise cut, tone control and edge sharpening. The 11fps burst mode speed isn't affected by ISO settings or lens choice. The 11fps AF tracking makes D4S, the fastest DSLR in Nikon's lineup of DSLRs.
Also, with the new group area AF mode, autofocus experience has been remarkably improved. The 51 point system can be configured as per use to 9 or 21 point coverage. There is a new format on the block called RAW Size S, which allows capturing of low res raw files for faster transport to networks. Videos on Nikon D4S can be recorded in resolution Full HD, half and full frame format at frame rates of 60p/50p/30p/ 25p/24p. The 3D noise reduction helps in cutting noise flickers easily to let in a particular kind of desirable audio. Overall, this DSLR is the best that Nikon has to offer when it comes to this genre of imaging devices.
Design and Build Quality
Nikon D4S has a weather-sealed full magnesium alloy body that sports D series of industrial design, which happens to be slightly different from D4. The thumb rest on vertical hold is slightly deeper and the space between the lens and fingers has been extended to help work with a wide range of lenses. The inbuilt battery grip contours have been too redefined to make room for larger and deeper thumb grip for comfort. To the left top of the camera, you can find flash, metering, bracketing and drive wheel. The top middle has hot shoe with diopter correction. Coming to the right edge, the camera has LCD info display, movie record, shutter release, power switch and exposure compensation.
Focus and Face Detection
Nikon D4S has a 51-point AF module wherein, there is a new group area AF mode that lets you pick an AF point, which activates four surrounding points as well. This helps to keep the subject on focus, all the time. Among the 51-points mode, you can also choose 9 point, single-point or 21-point modes. You get full-time contrast detection AF capability to operate in wide/normal area, face detection or subject tracking mode. You can also achieve manual focus.
Lens and Image Stabilization
Nikon D4S is compatible with AF NIKKOR lenses including E, G, D, DX, AI-P NIKKOR, non-CPU AI and limited PC lenses. The image stabilization would be lens based.
Screen and Menus
Nikon D4S holds a 3.2 inches diagonal wide LCD panel at the rear sporting a resolution of 921k dots. The viewing angles are up to 170 degress upwards and downwards with a 100% coverage. You can set the brightness by five steps and also adjust the color tone. The camera has a top panel monochrome display to show basic settings at work. The menu system may seem to be 'not to easy' at first, but has been laid out quite well, for there are segments like shooting, retouching, playback and custom setup. These menus involve several pages entailed further, but you end up finding every desirable setting. The most perplexing menu is of the custom setting wherein, it is further broken into 7 sections; Autofocus, Controls, Timers/AE lock, Metering/exposure, Bracketing/flash and Movie. AF has 10 sub-sections.
Nikon D4S uses a super compact, lightweight Li-ion rechargeable EN-EL18a battery, which has a capacity of 2500mAh/10.8V. As per the CIPA (Camera and Imaging Products Association) testing standards, you can achieve 3020 shots with a fully charged battery.
Nikon D4S can shoot videos in full HD/1080p resolution at 60p/50p/30p/25p/24p frame rates. The high quality videos at 42Mbps have a continuous recording time limit of 10 minutes and the normal quality videos at 24Mbps have a time limit of 20 minutes. The device offers 3 sensor crops; native (2.7x), FX (full frame) and DX (half frame). You can output uncompressed full HD video to external devices while you record them. This arrangement requires an HDMi cable, which gets shipped with the camera, so no worries. Along with this, you can also record H.264 video directly to an internal XQD/CF memory card.
Moreover, the exposure control is impressive in this mode wherein, you can use Auto ISO (ISO 400 - ISO 4,09,600) under full manual exposure mode for recording videos. There is a new auto-exposure function that helps in time gaped shoots like time lapse and others. So, difficult or time eating settings for exposure are being taken care of here. The camera also features 3D noise reduction that cuts noise and flickers when you shoot at high ISO settings. Now coming to the audio recording, there are many options for controlling audio; you can select audio frequencies like vocal range or wide range that let you record desirable sounds. Also, the audio levels can be adjusted up to 30 steps while recording. There are mic and headphone jacks for audio.
Nikon D4S features a 16.2 megapixels full-frame (FX format) CMOS type sensor. The sensor is placed behind an OLPF (Optical Low-Pass Filter) to help avoid imaging defects like moire and false colors. The size of sensor is of 36.0 x 23.9 millimeters with a native aspect ratio of 3:2. The resolution of images goes up to 4,928 x 3,280 pixels. There are two sub modes to this aspect ratio, which can be called as crop aspect ratio modes. These are 1.2x and 1.5x crop on focal length. A third mode is also present, which is 5:4, that uses full height of the sensor but cuts the side margins.
Coming to sensitivity, the ISO level range begins from 100 and goes up to 25,600 equivalents. At both ends of the range, the ISO level can be extended that is, from 100 you can select down ISO 50 and from ISO 25,600, you can select up to ISO 4,09,600. The auto ISO function selects high shutter speeds should the attached lens has long focal length. You can also adjust auto ISO to higher or lower shutter speeds. In manual exposure mode, auto ISO feature can be used to let you select the shutter speed and aperture setting.
