Nikon D5300 AF-S 18-140 mm Black - Expert Reviews

Overall Review

Nikon D5300 has same sensor as D7100, devoid of AA anti-aliasing filter. The sensor is APSC sized CMOS type DX format sensor. With 24 MP resolution and absence of optical low pass filter the clarity of the image is astounding. What this DSLR is boasting off here are the features of GPS and WiFi. The image-processing engine at the back is EXPEED 4. With this you can shoot videos easily at 1080p Full HD and at frame rate 60fps. Coming to the LCD size, it is 3.2 inches diagonally wide (1037k dots) and is vari-angle in nature, meaning you can tilt to desired angle for shooting. The AF system is Multi-CAM 4800DX. D5300 is also compatible to all the NIKKOR lenses. The camera could be availed with lenses viz. 18-55mm VR lens, and 18-140mm VR lens.

Design and Build Quality

Nikon D5300 features a clear and a bright LCD monitor, sized 3.2 diagonally, even though the overall body size has been reduced as compared to D5200. The screen is vari-angle in behavior. The body of the camera is well-constructed and is said to be inspired from monocoque design. The mode dial has a prime finish. At the roof of the camera is stereo mic. Those who are familiar with D5200 will feel happy with handling of D5300. The operations of physical controls fulfill the expected. The 4-way control at the back is used to place the focus point among 39 options. As far connectivity is concerned you get HDMI and AV/USB out. There is multi-function port that can accept MC-DC2 cable release and G1-GPS unit. The camera has also got front and back receivers for ML-13 wireless remote. The camera is lightweight in hand since most of the body is made of plastic. Between the 4 way controller, the OK button lets you control cam menus, shooting parameters. The camera doesn't come with an in-built AF motor, so you'll need to buy AFS lens to achieve AF. At the front there is a flash button that will pop the flash and represent the relevant menu too. Also there is a customizable Fn button. The red button on the top is for recording videos while Lv button is for live view. There is a bright LED AF illuminator as well that will take action when light would be too low. A hotshoe on top is for external speedlites. The memory card slot can take SD, SDXC, SDHC and also UHSI cards.

Focus and Face Detection

Nikon D5300 uses 39-point AF system with 9 cross-type sensors. The focusing modes are AF, manual, spot, Autofocus tracking and multi-tracking. The AF systems utilizes 3D tracking system that works in tandem with scene recognition system of camera to get to you the face detection capability. The 2016 pixels RGB sensor is responsible for the scene recognition ability. But above all, if you observe the CD(contrast detection) focusing system, it is not as fast.

Lens and Image Stabilization

Nikon D5300 can be availed with NIKKOR 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6 VR kit lens. Body only price is Rs. 54,450, while the above-mentioned lens costs Rs. 75,950 and 18-55mm lens costs Rs. 59,950. Nikon D5300 has NIKKOR compatibility, meaning all NIKKOR lenses can be added to the body of the camera. Nikon has also announced the release of 58mm f/1.4G prime lens for both crop-format(DX) and full-frame(FX) DSLRs. 58Mm lens has silent wave motor that results in silent AF aiding HD video recording. Sadly the camera doesn't have provision for image stabilization.

Screen and Menus

Nikon D5300 features an LCD monitor 3.2 inches wide diagonally. The screen resolution is 1037k-dots. The monitor is vari-angle type and you can use it easily for your awkwardly imagined angles. Coming to menu system, it is easy to use and is lot similar to the one we saw on D5200.

Nikon D5300 uses EN-EL14a Lithium-ion battery for power. Snatch out the features of GPS and Wi-Fi from your day's work and you can attain 600 shots as per CIPA ratings. An upgrade of 100 shots from D5100. The good thing about the battery is that it is compatible backwards as well, meaning you can use the same battery in Nikon D5200 as well. In the box you get the cover for terminal to the battery and an MH-24 battery charger.

Video Mode

The big crunch comes here. Nikon D5300 is the first from the company to be able to record videos at 1080p at the frame rate of 60fps. So Full HD, frame size being, 1920x1080 pixels, is available. Down the frame rates options, you get 50, 30, 25 and 24 fps. The 58mm G lens(that has recently been announced) comes with Silent Wave Motor that helps you to record videos quietly with AF usage. You can use simple manual focus and manual override focus with AF as well. The user also gets power to edit the clips. One can trim the clips and also extract stills. For audio recording purpose, you get an in-built stereo mic and provision for adding another mic, ME-1. You can pick ISO level from the wide range of light sensitivities. Optical zoom works like a boon while recording videos which ultimately get encoded in QuickTime .MOV format.

Nikon D5300 features new sensor but without optical low-pass filter, OLPF. D5300 is the most inexpensive DSLR to offer such a combination. The sensor is 24MP APSC sized DX format CMOS type. The design of sensor is devoid of OLPF/AA(Anti-Aliasing) to provide user with best possible clarity. Pixels width is 6000 and height is 4000. Aspect ratio exploited here is 3:2. in terms of metering, the sensor is 2016 pixel RGB while the size, numerically is 23.5mm x 15.6mm. The ISO sensitivity range begins from 100ISO to 12800ISO, it can be extended to 25600ISO as well.

* Nikon D5300 comes with a new sensor.

It doesn't feature an anti-aliasing filter, an advantage for better imaging as understood by the engineers.

The monitor is a vari-angle type like in D5100 and offers high-resolution.

There is built in Wireless Fidelity option you didn't get in earlier DSLRs.

The image processor at work is powerful one EXPEED 4.

24 megapixels is something shutterbugs would not have imagined.

Menu interface is easier to use

Nikon D5300 features over the screen controls mostly.

You can achieve special effects but under JPEG mode only.

Though there is GPS option but eats power like anything. In a way, having it or not having it is somehow the same thing, when you are out for rigorous photography.

There are buttons and dials that could intimidate new photography lovers and direct usage is not fast up to expectation.

AMAZING MACHINE TO CAPTURE LIGHT! Get 18-140 instead of 18-55 or combo
by Amitojdeep Singh Brar on 2015-06-17

I bought Nikon D5300 after advice from my friends at my college's photography club and using a friend's D5200. I read reviews online and found that this was the camera for me and I didn't overspend on D7100 instead for just a weather proofing and faster burst.
Camera and lens are separately review, but the combination is Made for each other!

1.Very low noise
2.Great battery life
3.Conveiniently designed controls
4.Quick Focusing
5.Compact but grippy
6.Bright and sharp display

1.A bit front heavy with 18-140 lens
2.Camera bag should have been high density polyester instead of cheapo rexine.

This is an excellent camera to learn photography and suitable for most people who don't click professionally. The low light performance is amazing for a DX sensor! At ISO 1600, the pictures are free of noise (unless you zoom to 100% and do nitpicking) . Even at ISO 3200 you wont need to process them much unless you are printing them, ISO 6400 files are also usable with noise reduction processing.

All the modes work as expected.I would advise you to keep eV to +0.3 on Nikons and -0.3 on Canons for optimal result. The camera catches focus pretty fast due to it's 39 point AF system.I prefer to use only 9 cross type points for ease of use.

Battery life is good, I clicked 400+ shots without flash and it didn't drop a bar! Nikon's estimate of 600+ shots seems valid. In short if you have access to power supply during your night stay, you won't need an extra battery mid day.

Auto mode also works well and is good enough for people who can click only with a phone or point and shoot. My friends(esp girls!) get a sense of accomplishment after clicking a photo using D5300 as they think NOW I CAN USE A DSLR :D !

I think above is enough for me say about it, technical details can be found on review websites, personal experience here!

1.18-140mm is most versatile lens, you wont miss any shot just because you couldnt zoom enough or go wide enough
2.Does away the need of changing lens frequently for zooming in.(You wont be exposing your sensor to dust!)
3.VR is great(true 4 stops VR!)
4.Durable with a metal mount and SOLID feel
5.Zoom ring is stiff to prevent accidental change of focal length
6.Decent bokeh at 140mm

1.A bit heavy, but all quality zoom lenses are!
2.Narrow focusing ring
3.The VR On-off and AF-M buttons don't have to good FEEL

18-140 VR lens is an awesome kit lens! The wide focal range let's you click 99% of shots and is a perfect all purpose lens unless you are a wildlife photographer. At 140mm it's zoom is 8x which is what good point and shoots have. 3x of a 18-55 is pretty much useless you don't have a tele lens in your kit.

The lens is tack sharp at both ends of it's focal length, a rare quality as most tele or multi purpose lens soften at their higher end.At 140mm the bokeh is good enough to bring a pro feel to your shots, but you have to stand faaar from subject.

It does have barrel effect and pincushioning as well as a little chromatic abberation. These can be corrected in lens profile correction option of Camera RAW or within the camera(Yet to test that).

VR is amongst the best! According to review sites it's true 4 stop VR vs 2-3 stop for most lens. Personally , I was able to easily click handheld at 1/6 which ain't manageable without being insanely still on average lens.
Overall this is a pretty versatile lens and the perfect kit lens for someone going beyond family photos due to it's wide focal range and versatility. For travel it's really great as you won't be changing lens every now and then.

Please go for 18-140mm kit instead of 18-55 only or 18-55+200mm , you will be really satisfied. Other addition to this great lens will be a 35mm or 50 mm prime.

PS:If you are serious about wildlife or clicking sports at a high zoom, get a 70-300 or better tele with VR or stablisation, it really more than makes up for triple cost vs a reglar tele.

Thanks for your patience ! Hit like if I helped you, your likes more than make up for the time I spent writing this.

D5300 18-149 VR Kit
by Ashutosh Singh on 2014-07-05

Bought 18-140 kit after a thorough research. as WS retailer was not the seller on flipkart , bought from elsewhere. You should be knowing that 18-55 is tagged as bad lens when compared with 18-140. Moreover, would you prefer having multiple lens like 18-55, 55-200 etc in your kit and then change them now and then for varied shots? this sounds really stupid as most likely you are not a pro who carries primes and zooms and macros separately.
D5300 with 18-140 VR is a perfect solutions for most of your shooting needs. It gives a decent bokeh and manual focus is pretty good. Images are sharp and well exposed. Just that lens is heavy like other DSLR lens.
My kit is D5300, 18-140 Vr , 1 extra battery, 32Gb Sandisk SDHC 45 mbps card. Advise you to have a similar kit and add primes with time.
As you evolve in a photographer you would realize 'Auto' is not a mode for this camera,
A good shot is everywhere, you only need an eye to find it. D5300 is your pupil and 18-140 your retina..Go shoot it!!

register their product with Nikon
by Ankur Jain on 2014-08-07

I got to know that not all camera sold by Flipkart are entertained for warranty due to camera serial number not find genuine. So please register your camera with company and check your warranty. If any body found any issue let post here for other to be careful.
This is what was communicated to me today by Nikon customer care.

STUNNINGLY GOOD ! 18-140mm is a do-everything lens, definitely a right choice.
by Supraja on 2015-07-28

No, I'm not a professional photographer. No, I'm not a semi-pro photographer either. I just click beautiful pics when I hang out. I bought this after a dig deep research to gift my husband. I didn’t wanted him to drag around 5 lbs of equipment and hence the choice 18-140 mm VS with D5300. This Nikon baby has everything I want/ever need.

Overall, this is an excellent camera for hobbyists. The camera performs very well in most shooting situations (except action in low light). If you're reading this, chances are you are like me, a hobbyist, and this camera is all you need.

(1) Picture quality is top notch.
(2) Low light performance is awesomazing. No noise at all. Maybe if you're a professional photographer, you'll see it. But for me, the pics are perfect and Focus is extremely fast, even in low light.
(3) If you want a walk around lens, get the 18-140 mm. It's an excellent one. Sharp, quick focus, light weight, and reasonable price. Since the camera performs very well at high ISO, you don't need really larger aperture (f2.8 or f.18). The lens also has VR - vibration reduction which is a very nice feature.
(4) Camera is light even with the 18-140 lens.
(5) The grip is a bit small. Bigger cameras (like D7100) have better grip, but also weigh a lot more.
(6) No touch screen. However, most of the times, we shoot in P mode, and we are not a pro photographers, so we don't need to change settings a lot.
(7) Videos quality is very good. However, it's not silent. The lens creates noise when focusing.

The D5300 has most functions of a professional DSLR, although some of these need to be accessed only through the 'menu' (instead of dedicated buttons). However, that is a small inconvenience as the camera body is small and light as compared to the really big DSLRs. The 18-140 mm lens gives excellent results and the auto focus is really fast. Though the DX format sensor is about half the size of a full frame sensor, the results are extremely good. The faster shutter speeds are fantastic. On the whole the camera and lens is a very good combination.

A minor grumble : The 'free' bag which came with the package was a bit of a disappointment as it was not up to Nikon's usual high standard :P

Happy shopping..

Here's one way to verify your warranty...
by Girish Bhangre on 2014-11-26

I'm going to take some time to address the warranty issues that everyone seems to be so concerned about. As soon as I received the invoice for my purchase, the first thing I did was to register the product on the Nikon India website. Unfortunately, the S/N provided on the invoice gave me an invalid serial number error on the website. I was a little spooked due to this. I immediately called up Nikon customer care to clarify and they asked me to take the DSLR to the nearest Nikon service center and get it verified. However, upon further observation, I realized that the S/N provided on the invoice was for the Nikkor lens, and not for the DSLR body. There are 2 different S/N, one for the body and one for the lens, and you have to register them separately. I was finally able to register both the body and the lens on Nikon's website and breathed a sigh of relief.

So, here are some pointers - while Nikon has advised against buying from Flipkart, I would first ask you to check the invoice the moment you get it. It should contain a mention of the serial number of the product (any one will do since it's unique) and carry the TIN/CST no. of the seller as well. These two things will help you verify a genuine invoice. Secondly, register your product immediately with Nikon India. If it throws an invalid S/N error, you'll know that it's not a genuine product. Alternatively, it could be that the product S/N has not been updated with Nikon India yet. In this case, you can take the product to your nearest Nikon service center and get the product verified from there.

Finally, and most importantly, note that Nikon DSLR sold by an authorized dealer will have a serial number starting with 7. This is true for all Asian countries except Japan. Mine starts with 7 as well. And my Nikkor lens's S/N starts with 2.

If all these things check out, then I don't think you need to be worried about warranty.

As for the DSLR itself, I don't think I need to praise it any more than some of the reviewers already have. It's a fantastic camera with great picture quality and the built-in WiFi is a boon! Before going for this, I was going to get the Canon 60D, but the Nikon D5300 has better picture quality, more features, is a newer model, has built-in WiFi and GPS, a larger display and is cheaper than the Canon 60D. One downside is the battery; it can only capture ~600 shots on a full charge compared to the ~1100 on the 60D. But I think 600 shots in a day is more than enough. I recommend using the viewfinder as compared to LiveView to save battery.

All in all, I would highly recommend the D5300 to anyone looking to foray into the amazing world of DSLRs. This camera is definitely the way to start that photography career that you have been dreaming of for so long. :p

Point to Point Review after 4 months use
by Rohit Sharma on 2014-06-24

After using more then four month I am in love with it and definitely you will also be.
Features those were impressive and helpful in day to day photography.
1. Vari-angle TFT Monitor : you need not be on your knees even for ground/ child shots.

2. Absence of Low Pass Filter : resultant highly sharp images

3. In built Wi-Fi : Control this camera with smart phone. Live view, focus and click images with mobile. Instant download to mobile directly from camera. No need to go back to your system to upload pics on social site. just click and upload.

4. Best color capture in images

5. It works best with Nikon AF-S 50mm prime lens. Best for portraits. (You can simply skip buying to kit lens i.e. Nikon 18-55mm cause once you work with prime lens you will never gonna use kit lens)

6. 24 MP Sensor : Even after cropping images in ur system it gives superb results cause 24MP is more then we need. So once you capture a moment it help in retouch.

Nice DSLR camera with wonderful features...
by Kandharaj Johnson on 2014-01-09

Recently I had purchased this DSLR from Flipkart. As usual Flipkart's shipping rocks, as the product reached prior to the scheduled delivery dates.

About Nikon D5300, a compact D5300 camera which has easy to use LCD swivel display. Also the wifi feature in this DSLR is awesome. We can sync the photos with a tab or a mobile. If a touch screen was provided, then this Nikon DSLR would have been complete. But this is nothing to worry.

It is a nice experience to handle and use this device.

Nikon D5300 - Genuine Product - Thanks to WS Retail
by Annamalairaj Jayaraman on 2015-01-28

Purchased Nikon D5300 from WS Retail. Verified with Nikon service centre that my camera is genuine including battery and lens. Thanks to WS Retail and FlipKart. And about the camera, don't have to explain. Cool features. Awesome picture quality. You can check all by yourself on the net. really cool.

I would like to purchase a DSLR very long time. Thus I used to keep reading reviews and comparing cameras. Finally I decided to purchase Nikon D5300.

In terms of money there was a huge difference between WS Retail and Nikon Dealers. So I've decided to purchase it from WS Retail (FlipKart). But I had some doubts on the product and its warranty because I noticed a pamphlet at the Nikon dealers showroom, It was mentioned, "don't purchase Nikon products from online" and also It had explicitly mentioned some of the dealers name. WS Retail is one among them. I got afraid. The thing is that I saw the notice after I made a payment. So I called to FlipKart customer care and cleared all my doubts before receiving. I was assured, it was genuine product and if not I can return the product as I have 30 day replacement guarantee from FlipKart. Thanks to FlipKart.

And special thanks to "Mr.Girish Bhangre" for his valuable feedback. I would recommend to read his review before anyone purchasing the camera. He explains everything clearly about Nikon warranty.

After I received the product, I took it to Nikon service centre and confirmed that the camera, battery and lens are genuine. I got relieved with a big sigh.

So don't hesitate to purchase from WS Retail. Once purchased take to the Nikon service centre, get it verified. If you find it not genuine (worst case) don't bother, you have 30 day replacement guarantee from FlipKart.

Once again thanks to WS Retail for it's quick delivery and FlipKart for it's wonderful customer support.
