Nikon D700 DSLR Body Black - Expert Reviews
Nikon D700 SLR (Body Only) appeared as the second full-frame imaging device to the DSLR line up of the cameras by Nikon. Though, the camera is no more on sale in India now, it does attract attention. The D700 picks up the D3's large FX format sensor and has a camera that is smaller and lighter than D3. The device is cheaper and can be titled as the first full frame DSLR that comes in the affordable price range. The full frame sensor is the headline feature of D700. The camera sports, 12.1megapixel CMOS sensor that delivers images with 4256 x 2832pixels when mated to the FX compatible lens. D700 sensitivity ranges from ISO 200 to 6400, the low and high modes fall in ISO 100 to 25600. The camera sports a powerful 51-point AF system and has a 3inches wide high-resolution VGA monitor with LiveView. The metering system is 1005pixels with an HDMI port that can be connected to HDTVs. The camera offers resistance to moisture and dust. The continuous shooting can be achieved at 5fps. The camera does not slow down while shooting in 14bit RAW mode and doesn't decrease its buffer when in higher sensitivities. The D700 comes with Virtual Horizon in LiveView wherein, you can level the camera with heads up display. Since we are considering the body for now, let us see what the camera has to give sans lenses.
Design and Build Quality
The camera measures 147 x 123 x 77mm and weighs 995grams. The body exudes confidence and is incredibly robust. The design and ergonomics are really a step up from other cameras in the same range. The rubber coating and slightly intended area inside the grip make up enough for a good hold. So holding the camera feels safe and comfortable. The head section is vulnerable due the pop up flash. The camera is sealed against dust and moisture along with O-rings and other seals in other areas like doors, flaps and controls. Nikon D700 SLR (Body Only) sports both thumb and finger dials. Most of the adjustments include holding down button at the dial is turned. There are no command dials for shoot modes. You have to press and hold the mode button by shutter release, and then turn around the thumb dial. There are only scene presets, PSAM modes, Program, Manual, Aperture and Shutter. To the right you have exposure offered in wide range of +/-5EV. The rotary dial around the shutter is used to switch the cam off and on. The upper left side of the camera has the release mode dial that lets you catch shoot modes namely, Single, Continuous High, Continuous Low, Self-timer, Live View and Mirror lockup. While your LiveView is on, you cannot select self-timer/continuous shoot. There are three large buttons for Quality, ISO and white-balance. Press and hold the quality button and turn thumb dial to adjust compression, finger dial control resolution.
To the right of the viewfinder you have small rotary switch that adjusts metering between Matrix, spot, and center-weighted modes. Amidst all these, you have AE-L / AF-L button. To the right of control for metering, there is AF-ON button that can be used as an alternate to trigger the AF system. To the upper right you have an eight way circular pad that lets you adjust focus points and navigate menus/scroll images. Below the switch sits the AF button that allows single point, dynamic area, and auto area.
Focus and Face Detection
The face recognition feature is observed in auto AF area mode. The metering sensor works under continuous AF mode that helps to track the subject on the move in Nikon D700 SLR (Body Only).
Lens and Image Stabilization
Lenses are not the part of the discussion. Nikon D700 SLR (Body Only) does not offer image stabilization, therefore one would have to use a tripod.
Screen and Menus
There are 10 key settings for using, the record, shoot bank controls, three assignable buttons, noise reduction, picture control, and colour space. My menu feature gives you access to almost all the features quickly. The LiveView settings sit in the shooting menu but not in the custom or setup. The menus are easy only when you have gotten experienced of the Nikon D700 SLR (Body Only). The screen is 3inches wide VGA monitor with high resolution.
The battery is a lithium-ion rechargeable one under CIPA standards wherein, you can have 1000 shots. The battery-life is good but you should pick a spare and keep it fully charged, if you are to go for outing with Nikon D700 SLR (Body Only).
There is no video mode to capture videos in Nikon D700 SLR (Body Only), yet the camera is great for all the other photographic uses.
The 15 AF sensors are more sensitive to light and are crosshatched in Nikon D700 SLR (Body Only). The Light sensing capability is good enough to shoot at almost any light level. The ISO ranges from 100 to 25600.
