Nikon D7200 DSLR Black - Expert Reviews

Overall Review

Nikon D7200 DSLR comes as a slight update to the impressive DSLR D7100. There are improvements though in a number of areas like ISO, video, focus, burst mode and low light shooting. The quality of the image has been improved as well over the previous version. Those having D7000 camera might find these updates quite useful, but not for those who have a D7100. D7200 has the best APS-C sized sensor till date and features a weather sealed body with a 3.2-inch wide screen.

The focus points are 51 and the focusing speed is fast with sharp results, even when the images are taken in low light. The burst mode shoot is 6fps, which can be advanced to 7fps when you make use of the 1.3x crop mode. The 24MP sensor without an optical low pass filter gives out clean results. One can easily use high quality lenses to attain quality videos and images. Overall, this new DSLR can prove to be a nice option for professionals.

Design and Build Quality

There are a few changes that have been made to Nikon D7200 when compared to Nikon D7100. The camera feels well when taken in hand and is quite compact. The sensor used is top of the range and the body is weather resistant. The camera is, in fact, larger than the compact DSLRs from Nikon and Pentax. There are hand grips at the front as well as the rear, which allow nice and firm grip to the fingers and the thumb at the back. At the rear, front and top, there are a number of buttons that allow for direct access to the settings.

There is a control dial at the front and a rear dial to adjust or set shutter and aperture speeds within manual shoot modes. The weight of the camera is 675 grams (body only), which is the same as that of D7100. The 'I' control at the back allows for quicker access to a number of physical controls over the monitor of the camera. The mode dial has a lock and a drive mode around it. There is the locking option that must be pressed before the dial can be altered.

Focus and Face Detection

Nikon D7200 offers 51 focusing points, of which 15 are of cross-type and focuses to -3EV. The available focusing modes are AF Fine Tuning (Micro Adjustment), Centre, Multi, AF Tracking, Face Detection, Spot, Manual and Autofocus.

Lens and Image Stabilization

Nikon D7200 comes with an 18-105mm kit lens with vibration reduction that offers a nice zoom range. The minimum focusing distance is of 45cm and it comes out the best when you are using full zoom at the telephoto end. Under area of high-contrast, purple fringing can be observed but as you go towards the corners, it exacerbates. Yet in a majority of shots, it is not the issue. At the wide-angle end, barrel distortion can be spotted and at the telephoto end, pincushion distortion can be spotted.

Both these defects can be corrected by turning on the automatic distortion correction feature. The high dynamic range is good enough, for the camera can catch good exposure in a number of light conditions. You can extend the dynamic range by using the active d lighting option or by using the in-built HDR shoot mode. There is no in-built image stabilization in the body of the camera but only in the kit lens.

Screen and Menus

The menu system of Nikon D7200 must feel familiar to people who have used Nikon DSLRs. The options are spread across seven menu layers, wherein each is coded with a particular color. The sections include recent settings, retouch, setup, custom settings, shooting, video and playback. There are custom menus that provide access to all the advanced settings with coded colors in sections. The screen at the rear is 3.2-inch wide with 1,229k dots resolution, contrast ratio of 1000:1 and RGBW as color array.

Nikon D7200 draws energy from an EN-EL15 Lithium-Ion rechargeable 1900mAh capacity battery, which is used in numerous Nikon imaging devices including Nikon 1 V1, D800E, D800, D7000 and D7100. As per CIPA testing standards, D7200's battery gets 1100 shots, which is an improved number over that of D7000's (1050) and D7100's (950). Moreover, with the bundle comes a MH-25a charger.

Video Mode

Nikon D7200 records full HD videos with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. The frame rates used can be 24, 25, 30, 50 or 60fps. At high video speeds, a crop mode of 1.3x is applied at 50 and 60fps. The audio is recorded in stereo format with the sensitivity of the microphone adjusted as desired or even left for auto. There is a SD card slot, wherein a SD card can be inserted for storing all the captured stuff. With an in-built vibration reduction feature, the videos produced are mostly steady enough to be accepted. The ISO settings for the videos can go as high as ISO25600. Optical focusing can be done while recording videos by pressing the shutter release control. The camera records good quality videos even in low light.

Nikon D7200 sports a 24.2MP CMOS APS-C sized sensor with pixels height and width of 6000 units and 4000 units respectively. The aspect ratios used are 3:2 and 16:9. Up to ISO3200, the results are good and the noise performance is excellent. Up to ISO3200, the performance of the camera in terms of noise is excellent and the results are clean at ISO settings lower than this as compared to those of 7100. At ISO6400, graining becomes more visible and detail gets to suffer with results still good enough. At ISO12800, detail is further lost yet the images may be of some use. At ISO25600, the noise performance is still fine with the DSLR producing good images under well lit conditions. ISO marks of 102400 and 51200 can be availed in JPEG monochrome only.

  • Enhanced battery life over the previous version
  • Dual card slots present
  • In-built NFC, HDR and Wi-Fi
  • Performance is fast
  • Warranty is of 2 years
  • Focus points are 51
  • Noise performance is excellent along with detail and image quality
  • Magnesium alloy weather resistant body gives an established look
  • 24.1MP sensor sans anti-aliasing filter

  • Nikon D7200 Black comes with the same FPS as in the older versions
  • With 18-105mm vibration reduction kit lens, distortion can be easily noticed
  • Wi-Fi application is limited and number of options are quite few
