Nikon D750 DSLR - Expert Reviews

Overall Review

Nikon D750 is the newest DSLR offering by the imaging devices maker Nikon. The camera is so advanced that it can spot white balance even during the live view. The ibutton on the camera allows for quick settings as featured on the recent DSLRs by Nikon. The battery life is of 1230 shots as per CIPA testing standards and of 4420 shots when the flash is not used. The dual SD memory card slots allow you to store JPEGs in one and videos in another. The scene recognition system is advanced, for there is face detection and 3D color matrix metering to the machine. Along with Wi-Fi, you get remote shooting, so that you can upload your work over social networks.

The camera also supports Eye-Fi cards. Full HD videos can be shot with minimal defects and moiré. With stereo mics built at the left and right of the optical axes, you get improved sound and sound level indicators. With a 3.2 inches wide display, you get 170 degrees of view. Moreover, with a monocoque build with carbon fibre and magnesium alloy plates, the camera has become a lot tougher. An EXPEED 4 image processor acts as the engine to the camera. Overall, the camera is a complete bunch of surprises and can be bought with a 24-120mm vibration reduction kit lens.

Design and Build Quality

Nikon D750 DSLR comes inside a solid weather-sealed body with a deep grip thanks to a number of rubber grips, implying that the camera is extremely well formed. The layout of controls will be quite familiar to those who have used recent Nikon DSLRs, since the layout of switches and buttons is the same as that in Nikon D610. The user of D610 camera will find that the top LCD is smaller (3.2 inches). This screen is of higher resolution and offers brilliant viewing angles along with a provision to adjust the color balance. D750 has come out as the most compact full frame DSLR from the imaging giant, Nikon and weighs nearly 750 grams, though you would not feel that it is heavy when you hold it in your hands.

The hand-grip is comfortable and larger, and the size of the rubber thumb grip is large too. The rubber even covers the memory card. The rubber is at the left hand side as well, which gives the camera an additional grip and most of the left side of the camera has been used for ports. The rear has numerous buttons and also controls that allow direct access to ISO/Color/White balance settings. Also, you can get access to shoot modes with the dials neatly placed under the main mode dial.

Focus and Face Detection

Nikon D750 DSLR comes with the following focusing modes; manual, autofocus, face detection, autofocus tracking, autofocus fine tuning and multi. The focusing system is new with a 51 point autofocus. Improved low light performance, multi-cam 3500II, new group area autofocus that was featured in D810, 15 cross sensors and 11 f/8 focus points (compatible) are the features that aid in focusing. DX format and FX/1.2x shoot modes within the DX mode cover focus points for the whole frame.

Lens and Image Stabilization

Nikon D750 DSLR produces images with high levels of detail along with a high dynamic range and a good color depth. For even better image quality, you can change settings within the camera and can convert RAW files to allow sharper results. Exposure can be relied on and the focusing is fast. The options for auto distortion control and vignetting correction can be availed within the camera. The dynamic range of the camera can be extended via D-lighting options that include Auto, high, extra high, normal, low and off. Alternatively, you can use the high dynamic range shoot option. For better results, you can use prime lenses should you want to shoot out in the open.

Screen and Menus

Nikon D750 DSLR comes with a clearly laid out menu system. The screen is quite clear and the viewing angles are excellent. The menu system has been split into 7 sections; Photo shooting, playback, movie shooting, custom settings, retouch, setup and my menu. Navigating the settings is straightforward and you can press the help button to view the help options over any setting. My menu section can be customized to allow quick changes to your favorite settings. The 3.2 inches screen is of high resolution and its color balance can be adjusted as well. The resolution of the screen is of 1,229,000 dots.

Nikon D750 DSLR comes rated with 1230 shots as per the CIPA/Nikon testing standards, which is indeed excellent and when you are not using flash, the count increases. There is also an optional battery grip available that can help you for 8000 shots. The rechargeable Li-Ion battery comes with a terminal cover and a MH-25 charger.

Video Mode

Nikon D750 DSLR comes with inbuilt stereo microphones for enhanced audio recording and records full HD videos at 24, 25, 30, 50 and 60p. There are numerous options present in the dedicated video shooting menu system. There are options for microphone sensitivity, higher ISO and wind noise filter.

Nikon D750 DSLR comes with a full-frame sensor of 24.3MP resolution and has pixel's width and height of 6016 units and 4016 units respectively. The aspect ratio for the images is 3:2. For low noise and best possible detail, it is recommended to use ISO50 to ISO3200. The lowest ISO setting of ISO50 reduces the dynamic range. For low light situations, 6400ISO to ISO12800 sensitivity gives good results, though noise increases and the detailing is low. The noise performance in this camera has been noticeably improved as compared to Nikon D610. At ISO25600, noise levels are strong and it is recommended that you do not make use of it, for the results will only be usable if they are resized and put on the web. At ISO51200, noise is very high, so photography at this level must be avoided.

  • Nikon D750 DSLR comes with an inbuilt Wi-Fi
  • There is two years of warranty for damage
  • Battery life is impressive
  • Body of the camera is compact
  • Display can tilt
  • Noise performance is impressive and ISO sensitivity can go up to ISO12800
  • Low-light focus can go down to -3EV
  • Automatic shutter speed control for automatic ISO

  • Nikon D750 DSLR comes with a smaller top display
  • White balance is not better
  • Cheaper alternatives to this camera can be availed
