Nikon DF DSLR AF-S 50mm Black - Expert Reviews
Nikon Df with AF S 50mm offers an old Nikon film SLR type styling that is inspired by cameras like Nikon FM-2/3. The camera has its manual controls come with a big shutter speed control dial and small mode dial at the top right that is locked - to be pulled in the upward direction to be unlocked. It has been designed to give a feel of the actual camera that is meant for photographers to enjoy the process of photography. So, you needn’t be held back by the physical controls and rather can maximize the present non-Ai lenses. You can also use the Ai lenses, thus making the camera compatible with lenses that go back to the year 1959 when it used stop down approach for metering. This is achieved by using a new retractable lens coupling about the mount for lens.
To take advantage of the lenses for manual focus, there is a mode for the same where the point of autofocus can be turned off. There are 3 Ai lenses only that aren’t compatible with the device. For non-Ai lenses, the use of lever for metering coupling can be moved out of the way. Df is the first of its kind from Nikon to back these lenses.
Design and Build Quality
The roof of the camera sets the biggest clue that it is styled retro and has been inspired by Nikon's old school. This is evident with metal dials, controls and switches, screw at the centre and shutter release trail to shutter release cables that were popular in the film SLR cultures. The maker has tried to make the camera as compact as possible while also allowing for textured handgrip extending round to the back and up to the thumb rest. Therefore, the camera becomes a good purchase piece, even if it does not come with a video mode. Sadly, the handgrip has been rubberized at the back with a textured plastic at the front, which many will not like. The control wheels at both, front and back have been placed quite well and allow for easy access to extend or move thumb and finger excessively.
This makes the camera easy for longer use. The control wheel at the front is of vertical type, one that differs from the usual positioning of the same over other Nikon DSLRs. The experience of its use is good. The mode dial at the top right lets you see PASL shoot modes, though the camera does not feature the beginner scene modes or auto mode other than P.
Focus and Face Detection
Nikon Df comes with the following focusing modes; autofocus, manual, face detection, AF tracking, multi and AF fine tuning. The AF system is 39 focus points/9 cross type.
Lens and Image Stabilization
Nikon Df's lens performance is fine. The device produces detailed pics with smart exposure and excellent color reproduction. 50mm f/1.8 G lens kit delivers brilliant pics with sharpened details. Lens is resistant to flare, even if you use it without the deep hood. A wide range of lenses is available from Nikon and other manufacturers while the prime lenses perform quite well. The focus of the lens is quite quick and trustworthy. There is also the image stabilization feature.
Screen and Menus
Nikon Df has its menu simple and clear. All those shutterbugs who have used older Nikon DSLRs will find themselves familiar with the menu system. The options have been categorized quite neatly. There is My menu where you can drop your favourite settings so that you can have easy and quick access to the settings. There are also a number of settings that support Ai lenses. You can attach the camera with non-CPU lenses like older Nikon lenses. There is a pic control that lets you adjust sharpening, brightness, saturation, contrast and hue. The LCD screen is 3.2 inches wide with a resolution of 921kdots. The glass on the screen is a reinforced one.
Nikon Df holds the battery at its bottom, where there is compartment for memory card as well. The camera features a single SD card slot unlike D600 or 610 that feature 2 SD card slots. Some people might as well be disappointed that there is no side access to the card of the memory. You get 1400 shots over the entire battery life as per CIPA rating since the electronic management has been improved. The battery used here is the same as Nikon D5300 - EN-EL14a rechargeable Li-ion. The battery charger that comes along with the pack is MH-24.
Nikon Df does not come with a video mode.
Nikon Df possesses a 16.2 megapixels CMOS type full frame sensor with pixels width and height as 4928 and 3280 respectively. The width and height of the sensor are 36mm and 23.9mm. The aspect ratios are 3:2 and 16:9. Coming to the noise performance by this sensor, when ISO is at 50ISO, the noise is almost nil and stills are excellent. The situation is the same up to ISO6400. The reduction in noise is very low as per the default settings when compared to other DSLRs. This means that even when you are shooting at ISO12800 or ISO6400, the detail is preserved. There is a drop in the detail at higher ISOs, which are 25600 and 51200 equivalents. Even ISO102400 could be usable. ISO204800 for catching stills is not recommended. The settings for camera's high ISO NR are normal, low, off and high. At ISO50, the dynamic range is quite less.
