Olympus Stylus 1 - Expert Reviews
Olympus Stylus 1 is the latest compact camera from Olympus and it features a bright f/2.8 fixed and an optical zoom lens of levels 10.7x. It also features optical image stabilization. There is a 12 megapixels back-illuminated CMOS sensor and you can have full manual control over the camera adjustments. What is different here is that this camera comes with a removable lens cap over a lens cap that closes in automatically when the camera is switched off. This protects the lens when it is not in use also it saves you from losing the lens cap. There is control for zoom at the left hand side. A control ring also surrounds the lens and a control wheel sits atop the camera. At the rear of the camera is a 3 inches wide tilt screen and a 1.44 million dots EVF(electronic viewfinder). There is also an in-built flash that pops via use of one of the side buttons. The camera is at times an undeniable offer.
Design and Build Quality
Olympus Stylus 1 has a very modern design after all. At the top of the camera there is a mode dial, control wheel, a flash hot shoe, a shutter release with zoom around it. There is also an on/off button and button for activating video shoot. There are two function buttons, one at the rear where thumb rests and another sits at the front with a switch. The touch monitor at the back can be tilted down and up, there is a control wheel round the lens. The OK buttons displays settings on the screen so that they can be changed. The menu system and other settings are same as what you find on Olympus PEN and OM-D Micro Four Thirds(MFT) cameras. At the bottom there is a memory card and battery compartment. Even the battery that is used here is same as the ones used in Olympus PEN and OM-D Micro Four Thirds cameras. As per CIPA testing standards, you can take 410 shots upon single charge.
Focus and Face Detection
Olympus Stylus 1 has a minimum focus distance of 5cm. The focusing modes are manual, spot, autofocus, face detection, multi, centre, touch AF and AF tracking. The camera comes with a 35 area multiple AF system with a 9 area group, meaning the camera is capable of both continuous and single autofocusing. It also features face priority, AF tracking and eye detect autofocus. The Stylus 1 coems with an effective and fast touch autofocus and shutter system the one usually found on Olympus PEN cameras like E-P5, E-PL5 and E-PM2.
Lens and Image Stabilization
Olympus Stylus 1 comes with I.Zuiko lens with optical zoom capability of 10.7x and an equivalent range of 28-300mm. The optics are 12 elements in 8 groups and involves optical image stabilization to provide blur-free images. In super macro mode, you can get as close as 5cm and 10cm, normally at wide-angle end with 80cm at full telephoto, when focus limits are concerned. The maximum aperture is f/2.8. The lens also comes with an in-built auto lens cap that opens like a flower when power is turned on and also covers the lens when power is turned off.
Screen and Menus
Olympus Stylus 1 features 3 inches wide 1.04 million dots LCD touch monitor. The screen can be tilted downwards by 50 degrees and upwards by 80 degrees to give flexi-viewing angles for a number of shoot situations. The menu button displays menu system and you can use OK button for selection. The touch monitor doesn't really give enough freedom for settings to be changed, under super control panel, you can choose settings but cannot cycle through the settings. There is info button to toggle through on-screen features like 3D electronic level gauge, highlight/clip readout and real-time histogram. You can use the same button to turn off graphic overlays. The menus are have been managed in two sets of 7 each on screen. Opening on limitation of touchscreen, you can tap-select the settings then you'd have to use the OK button and then use directional buttons to adjust settings.
At the bottom of Olympus Stylus 1, along with metal tripod socket, there is a door for rechargeable BLS-5 Li-Ion battery and also space for memory card. The socket for tripod is not aligned to central axis and is positioned quite close to the battery door making access to both the elements very difficult. The same battery has been utilized with Olympus PEN and OM-D MFT(micro four thirds). As per CIPA testing standards 410 shots can be attained.
Olympus Stylus 1 can shoot videos at Full HD resolution, 1080p, but this resolution can only achieved at frame rate of 30fps. When resolution is reduced, high-speed videos can be achieved at both 240p and 120p. Maximum clip length is 29 minutes for regular video recording.
