Olympus Stylus XZ-10 Point & Shoot Camera Black - Expert Reviews
Olympus Stylus XZ-10 Point and Shoot is the new dynamite that fits into a tiny pocket and brought by Olympus, is a premium compact camera that has the main features of 12megapixel backlit 1/2.3inches CMOS sensor and an ultra-bright 26-130mm equivalent f/1.8-2.7 zoom lens. The XZ-10 also brings to your hand, a high-resolution 3-inch touch-sensitive LCD screen, TruePic VI image processor, 1080p Full HD movie recording and Eye-Fi/FlashAir compatibility for putting up images directly on the social networking websites. When talking of the rest of the features that make this device a stand out amongst the others, they are a control ring around the lens that makes the lens much too customisable, a full manual exposure mode, a mode for the raw image capture, and 120fps high-speed HD video recording facilities that come alongside the 11 Art filters. Our review on this device is most definitely positive, as Olympus XZ-10 is an effortless device that has packed many features of the Olympus’s flagship model under the name Olympus XZ 2 into a device that is like almost half the size and weight of that camera, at a high affordable price. Now, despite making the use of a small 1/2.3 inch CMOS sensor,(having a CMOS sensor fit in a compact body is a big deal itself) it delivers almost a too good to be true quality of image that is largely thanks to the super fast lens of the camera, although nearly not as sharp and detailed as on Olympus XZ 2 or other compacts at the higher end. Well, Olympus XZ-10 is definitely a big deal smaller than its predecessors are and hence, the compatibility of this device needs to be kept in mind while accessing the device. Leaving the dimensions aside, it looks as if Olympus has taken its flagship XZ-2, stripped it of its large sensor, tilting LCD screen, and removable grip, so that it becomes relatively smaller in dimensions and hence came up with our reviewed device.
However Olympus XZ-10 still works with the amazing touch functionality, the outgoing lens control ring, the super efficient lens, an entire array of manual controls, a FlashAir technology, and even a zoom range that is a little wider than normal. That been said, yes, Olympus XZ-10 is totally a genius in most aspects, and if you are an All Olympus man, the Olympus XZ-10 is an efficient alternative for a really well performing but huge Olympus XZ-2. Obviously, we do not question it, this is not up for discussion, and Olympus XZ-10 does not perform as well as its predecessor and rightly so, given the price range. It has a really small sensor that brings out a lot of noise when it comes to really high ISO speeds. There was also a very high amount of purple fringing involved in the high-contrast scenes. Leaving that aside at normal ISO level, the fast iZuiko lenses, the back illuminated CMOS sensor and the TruPic VI image processor which is also known to be used in the SLR PEN range combine and brings out JPEG formats of highly pleasing colors, great sharpness and an overall tonality that is really brilliant.
The video quality on the other hand, is still like a mixed bag. It is really wonderful to use the optical zoom functionality while filming at and to be able to apply the Art Filters to give the in camera footage but, when you rate a product of this calibre you expect user selectable frame rates and full control over the existing video exposure. The XZ-10 is actually, what most of the photographers are looking for that is, modest 12MP pixel counts, a fast lens, RAW file support, a huge 35-point AF system and then, there is a well implemented manual exposure mode which is completed with an optional live histogram. Add to this a LCD touch screen, its controls, the innovative lens control ring, a fast image processor that is able to avoid any kind of major freeze ups in the device while shooting simultaneously for RAW and JPEG, and there is then the portability of the camera.
Design and Build Quality
Olympus XZ-10 is all but a fancy show camera, it is all about business and is a no nonsense styling device, it has a metallic black body where full manual control is offered in the picture taking process. At 102.4mm x 61.1mm x 34.3mm, it is almost about 40% smaller than its elder brother in the business, the earlier mentioned Olympus XZ-2 and this shrinking has happened mainly because of a 1.2.3 inch CMOS sensor that is a relatively smaller fixed LCD screen rather than the tilting one. The device is a really small, yet a substantial affair is made of a big combination of metals and plastics in the same manner. There is almost a minimalist front plate that includes a really useful dial circled around the housing of the lens. Also, there is a top plate which houses a strong power button, a shutter release, a zoom lever, a mode dial and finally, a rear panel all of which are dominated by the high resolution touch screen LCD display which covers almost the entire rear of the device. With battery and memory card included, the device weighs 221grams.
Focus and Face Detection
There are many shooting functions that made their way into the four-way pad; these include focus modes, AF point selection, a drive mode, a self-timer, and a flash mode. There are a total of 35 AF points on Olympus XZ-10, if you need to change the active AF point, all you need to do is press the left arrow button, and you can easily pick 1.9 or all of the 35 focus points by the use of arrow keys- this is simple and effective. The available focus mode settings on the device are “normal AF,” this is when the focus range is limited from 60cm to infinity and thus forth, allows the camera to attain focus quite quickly, then there is Macro AF, this lets you focus down to 10cm at the very wide end and 30cm at the telephoto end of the screen.
Lens and Image Stabilization
One of the centre spots of Olympus XZ-10 is quite clearly the ultra fast 26-130mm equivalent zoom lens. The company is pushing heavily forth the f/1.8 maximum aperture at 26mm end, but also, the telephoto end is highly interesting with Olympus XZ-10 bringing a maximum aperture of f/2.7 at the very 130mm end. Now, as you can see rightly through the sample images, this really transforms into surprisingly a really well achieved ability to isolate this area under discussion from back of the discussion grounds, which over the period of discussion makes the image looks significant with those which have been taken right with the camera having much bigger sensors.
Screen and Menus
The back of Olympus XZ-10 is fully sported by the high resolution LCD screen which on the rear, is really found out to be highly usable, now there is a really high detail and bright color retention facility available even when it is viewed from the most extreme angle. A new LCD screen can be tilted up and down like in the case of Olympus XZ-2 model. The Olympus XZ-2’s touch screen can really very well be configured via one of the possible three ways- turned off, one touch focussing, and then, there is the simultaneous one touch focusing.
All the power in Olympus XZ-10 is drawn from the LI-50B Li-Ion battery with the sleep mode being available in 1minute, 3minutes, and 5minutes. Also, there is the availability of Live View Shooting, now under CIPA, the number of shots in Olympus XZ-10 is restricted to approximately 240 images which is 100% at Live View.
The Olympus XZ-10 gives way to highly efficient Full HD 1080p movie mode, technically 1920 x 1080pixels at 30fps, it has a recording time of 29minutes, then there is a 720p HD mode also at 30fps alongside the simple 480p and 240p recording modes, one of the highlights is that 720p HD movie recording is also available at 120fps in the device.
Now, keeping the subject of isolation aside, the major benefit that a super fast lens is able to give when it is coupled alongside a sensor shift image stabilisation is most definitely the ability to achieve the hand held shots inside the low light areas, you really don’t have to take a dive in ISO sensitivity setting. It is however important to understand that the 1/2.3 inch CMOS sensor is really small when you compare it to the sensor used in DSLRs.
