Olympus TG-3 Point & Shoot Camera Black - Expert Reviews
Olympus TG 3 Point and Shoot is a tough camera that holds features of being waterproof, freeze-proof and shock-proof for shooting in the harshest of conditions. The build of the camera is nice and it slips easily into the hands. The focal length of 25-100mm, in 35-mm terms, covers a zoom length of up to 4x. Like other waterproof cameras, the compact lens does not protrude but extends inwards when zoomed. It has a maximum aperture of fast f/2.0 and also comes with an aperture priority mode to work with this aperture. Its aperture can be set in three ways; minimum, medium or maximum. Images shot in low light are really stunning. The ISO sensitivity covers up to 6400ISO, which is better than its competitors. The sensor is a 16MP backside illuminated one and the processor is a TruePic VII image processing engine. Though the camera is a little pricey, it surely holds all the value that one seeks for in return.
Design and Build Quality
Olympus TG 3 Point and Shoot looks like a typical compact camera. There are some unrequired bolt heads at the cover. There is a textured rubber grip at the right side of the body and a small thumb-grip area at the rear. The camera is nice and convenient to hold. The power button, zoom lever, shutter button over the top are partly sunk-in, thus protecting the buttons from being damaged, but if you are wearing gloves the buttons become hard to operate. The zoom control is not so easy to fiddle with. The controls at the back are not so good, for there are small buttons that are difficult to fiddle with, the mode dial is narrow and partly recessed and also, there is a small d-pad. The menu design of Olympus has been enhanced over the past years by taking design cues from the manufacturers. There is a quick menu for oft-used settings and the build quality of the camera is excellent. There are sturdy hinges, O-ring seals and locking hatches and the plastic body feels quite durable and tough. The wrist strap and steel mounting point look quite big too.
Focus and Face Detection
Olympus TG 3 Point and Shoot Camera shoots and focuses fast and precise in better light conditions. The low light focusing could have been better since it fails quickly instead of hunting the subject. There is a bright white LED next to the flash that can be used for focusing, but it doesn’t operate with flash and in video mode. The camera comes with a first ever macro mode including Microscope Control Mode, Microscope Mode, Focus Bracketing Mode and Focus Stacking Mode. The microscope mode allows you to magnify the subject by more than 40x from a distance as small as 1cm.
Lens and Image Stabilization
Olympus TG 3 Point and Shoot Camera comes with a 4x optical zoom lens that was featured in TG-2. The focal length of the camera is 25 to 100mm, in 35-mm terms and the maximum aperture begins at bright f/2.0 at the wide-angle position but falls dim by f/4.9 at the telephoto position. The real focal length covers 4.5mm to 18mm. The aperture range is only of three steps wherein, you can choose from f8.0, f2.8 or f2.0 at the wide-angle position and go up to f4.9, f6.3 or f18.0 at the telephoto position. The positive side is that the camera is able to focus very close - by 1cm and does that at 30mm, 100mm equivalents, making quite a respectable macro shots. The presence of a mechanical sensor based image stabilization feature helps to fight camera shake. Also, there is a five-mode flash strobe that helps to brighten nearby subjects. With a given optical formula, you can shoot great images even in low light conditions.
Screen and Menus
Olympus TG 3 Point and Shoot Camera comes with a 3-inch wide LCD monitor at the back. This display is organic with a bit lower resolution than TG-2. The TG-2’s monitor holds a dot count of 610,000 whereas TG-3 holds a dot count of 460,000 dots. The menu system has been laid out well.
Olympus TG 3 Point and Shoot Camera delivers quite a good battery performance. The battery capacity is of 1350mAh. The shot count is 200 frames as per Olympus testing standards, however in real, if you end up taking 200 shots the camera will still have 3 bars left on its battery meter.
Olympus TG 3 Point and Shoot Camera shoots videos in Full HD mode at a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. The videos are saved inside .MOV container and the compression used for videos is h.264. Along with standards videos, TG-3 also supports time-lapse and high-speed videos. Both make use of Motion JPEG compression inside an AVI container. The time lapse videos can go up to ten seconds and play 10 frames a second for a total of 100 video frames. The maximum resolution is of 1280 x 720 pixels. The high speed videos have a low resolution of 640 x 480 pixels at a frame rate of 120fps, and the non-standard videos have a resolution of 432 x 324 pixels at a frame rate of 240fps.
Olympus TG 3 Point and Shoot Camera comes with a 16MP 1/2.3-inch backside illuminated CMOS sensor. The top resolution for stills can be set to 4608 x 3456 pixels. The camera can catch only JPEGs, offering only two levels for compression - normal and fine. The size of the sensor is 1/2.3-inch but the total pixel count has been increased from 12MP in the previous cameras. The new sensor has been accompanied by a TruePic VII image processing engine, which allows sensitivity range and burst mode shoot performance like in the previous cameras, although having small pixels with a high pixel count. The ISO sensitivity range covers ISO 100 to ISO 6400 and full resolution images can be achieved at five frames a second for a maximum of 25 shots in burst mode.
