Olympus VG-110 Point & Shoot - Expert Reviews
This point and shoot camera from Olympus - The ‘Olympus VG 110’ is the definition of fun! It’s smart and light, expense vise and even literally. It’s friendly and so anyone, even an amateur can enjoy working with it. It starts with an impressive 12 megapixel CCD sensor that takes brilliant images with the focal length of 27 to 108 mm; you can capture easily a large landscape to self shots. Then there is an optical zoom for 4X and a digital zoom of 4X. To top it all, the camera is packed with different scene modes that include Indoor, Fireworks, Pet, Candle, Cuisine and more. Additionally you can fine different filters that give you the artistic spin on pictures. This includes filters like Pop art, Punk, Sparkle, Drawing etc. Plus, auto focus options that enables face detection too, up to 16 faces. The camera works fine with its automated options, such as with the Intelligent Auto setting that detects and clicks pictures with optimized result. This can detect environments like portrait, landscape, night, portrait, macro and even sports. Further, the camera can also shot macro mode to as close as 0.05m and if that is not enough the camera is capable of recording videos. With that and more like in camera editing that allows red-eye fix, shadow adjustment and cropping in still images. The camera is more than enough with what new camera users can desire for. The mixture of affordability and artistic aspect with swift technology, the camera is a good buy given that you are looking for a budget device and do not rely heavily on the specifications of the device.
Design and Build Quality
Sporting a beautiful body and a stylish outlook, Olympus VG 110 is the camera you would love to show off. It weighs a breezy 105 grams, so you won’t feel bulky carrying it around anywhere at anytime. Effortlessly portable all reason to its 92 x 54 x 20 mm of dimension. The camera’s rear panel is clean and without clutter with basic button and joystick to manage around the menus and other options including the 2.7 inch screen that covers most of the back side. The power button lies on the top with the flash and the lens covering its front. The camera is available in a distinct variety of colors from Black, a sober grey to a vivid Red.
Focus and Face Detection
For focus Olympus VG 110 offers ample ideas, beginning from the AF tracking system that automatically works to track quick moving subjects and unexpected movements that one encounters especially with subjects like kids and/or pets. It does so by continuously adjusting the focus and brightness, so you don’t only get focused but aptly focused and great quality pictures. There is also another great features that help maximize optimal face focus called ‘Shadow Adjustment Technology’ or simply SAT. This detects faces of your subject and optimizes focus with appropriate exposure settings. Moreover, there is inbuilt Face detection software in the Olympus VG 110 that can recognize up to a whopping 16 faces in a single frame shot. It can individually focus on them to provide desired sharpness. This is a fantastic feature for group/family photos in larger number and with the touch of the self timer, you can join in the group and let the camera take one for you, the shutter release delay in self timer mode is 2 or 12 seconds.
Lens and Image Stabilization
As for the lens, Olympus VG 110 uses a great 4x optical lens that covers a 35 mm equivalent range, starting from a salutary 27 mm wide angle to a decent 108 mm telephoto. This for every day shooting is modest and can get a large ground covered as subject to your images and bring you pretty close to action too.
Screen and Menus
Olympus VG 110 sports a delightful 2.7 inch TFT LCD display with amazing 230,000 resolutions roughly equating to a 320 x 240 pixel display cluster in which each pixel compromises of the primary red, green and blue dots. It’s a great screen for composing and reviewing your pictures and videos in Live View. Menu system is nothing extra ordinary, but very easy to use which compliments it over all. For extra help and guidance there is an on board Help Guides option that will describe features to you in simple language.
The camera uses a rechargeable Li- Ion Battery which has a charger included. There is a provided internal memory of a decent 18MB as well as Secure Digital Memory cards that include the newer SDHC types but not SDXC cards. Your taken images and videos can be easily ported to PC over a 2.0 USN high speed connection with a given standard video output. In all, the camera can last 170 shots over a full charge, which seems reasonably amazing.
Giving the camera an edge is its video recording abilities. Olympus VG 110 can capture VGA or QVGA resolution movies with the option to select from 15 / 30 frames per second rate of recording. And also in JPEG compression in AVI motion. Is this the best out in the market? Perhaps, not but with the affordance and the larger appeal of the camera for amateurs this won’t be too bad.
As for the sensor, Olympus VG 110 caters a high resolution CCD superior image sensor with 12 million pixels. The end result quality of the pictures is reasonably good with little to complain about. The pictures are detailed enough to be cropped and print later, without losing much of its detailing and brightness.
The camera has a stylish appearance, with an amazing auto functions and artistic filter.
The video quality is a set back, the internal memory space is a little too less and the camera build is not too strong apart from this the camera works fine.
