Panasonic Lumix DMC-F5 Point & Shoot Digital Camera Silver - Expert Reviews

Overall Review

Panasonic Lumix DMC F5 Point and Shoot Digital Camera comes with a 5x optical zoom lens and a 14.1MP CCD sensor that covers a focal length range equal to 28mm to 140mm, in 35mm terms. While shooting, you are also aided by the auto scene selector that automatically adjusts the configuration of the camera for a given scene like sunset, night landscape, night portrait, landscape, portrait and macro. Panasonic Lumix DMC-F5 Point & Shoot Digital Camera stitches scenes under the panorama shoot mode - which actually is not actual stiching of images but overlaying them over one another.

Videos can be recorded in HD resolution at 30fps. Images can be shot under decent coloring enabling them to come out well formed and exposed. The skin tones are just okay and you can manage to shoot good shots with the flash though some results will certainly differ. Coming to its white balance performance; under the incandescent lights, the auto white balance and incandescent preset work well and each delivers almost the same result. The auto white balance works well under the fluorescent light too. There is no fluorescent preset that can be used.

Under the panorama mode, detailing is just about OK and panoramas are well formed and stitched together, though ghosting is observed slightly that too when you look close enough. There are digital filters but not many to choose from. There are color modes instead that include Standard, Black, White and Sepia. Panasonic Lumix DMC-F5 Point & Shoot Digital Camera doesn’t come with a lot of features and does not even score high in other categories as well. The camera is inexpensive and is a perfect one to be gifted to a child. The quality of images delivered can be shared easily on social sites like Facebook but when you download the images and view them large, you will clearly be able to spot some issues.

Whats good about the camera is that it comes in a lightweight and compact body. The camera delivers decent panoramas and with its decent battery life, you can shoot a good number of shots. The focusing speed is sluggish and with buttons decked in, it may become difficult for taking too many shots. The use of a tripod is advised for when you are shooting in full zoom, the camera may produce shaky images as there is no image stabilization feature to help the shaky images look stabilized. Not only this, F5 takes a lot of time to start over and shut down. The burst mode also has restrictions as when it is used with a flash mode, it limits the size of the image to merely 3MP.

Design and Build Quality

Panasonic Lumix DMC-F5 Point & Shoot Digital Camera comes inside a lightweight and a pocketable metallic body. A number of buttons lie at the rear like delete, playback and movie. There are two buttons that adjust the d-pad and zoom and can be used to access menus and navigate the menu items. The d-pad also allows access to exposure compensation, flash and self-timer.

Focus and Face Detection

Panasonic Lumix DMC-F5 Point & Shoot Digital Camera comes with the following focusing modes; spot, autofocus, face detection, centre and multi. The minimum focusing distance is 10cm.

Lens and Image Stabilization

Panasonic Lumix DMC-F5 Point & Shoot Digital Camera comes with a 5x optical zoom lens that offers a zoom power that covers a maximum aperture range of f/3.2 - f/6.5. The focal length range covers 28mm – 140mm, in 35mm terms. The lens performance is OK when you are shooting at wide-angle position, mainly at the centre of the images. When you zoom in, the quality worsens with purple fringing appearing as the main defect all through. The lens comes with a minimum focusing distance of 10cm. You can with this minimum focusing distance get a little closer to the object, but you would not get an expected good macro shot.

Screen and Menus

Panasonic Lumix DMC-F5 Point & Shoot Digital Camera offers a 2.7-inch wide screen display with a resolution of 230k dots, which is typical of a small digital camera. The menu system is easier to navigate but you cannot speedily change the ISO settings and white balance, since you have to press the button for menu first and then choose a recording option.

Battery

Panasonic Lumix DMC-F5 Point & Shoot Digital Camera comes rated with 250 shots as per CIPA rating standards, which is good enough for hangout spanning an entire day.

Video Mode

Panasonic Lumix DMC-F5 Point & Shoot Digital Camera records videos in 1280 x 720 pixels HD resolution wherein, the quality of the video is just fine. You cannot use the optical zoom while recording videos, for there is no image stabilization and so, the videos become shaky when the shooting is done by holding the camera in the hand.

Sensors

Panasonic Lumix DMC-F5 Point & Shoot Digital Camera comes with a 14.1MP CCD sensor that catches images with a width of 4320 pixels and a height of 3240 pixels. The size of the sensor is 1/2.33-inch. The aspect ratios used are 4:3, 3:2, 16:9 and 1:1. The ISO sensitivity range reaches from ISO100 and goes up to ISO1600. The noise is less at ISO100 and a bit of it appears at ISO200. The images become softer at ISO400. However, a lot of detail gets lost when you turn to ISO800. The images become awful at ISO1600.

  • Panasonic Lumix DMC-F5 Point & Shoot Digital Camera does not come with many features in its specs list
