Overall Review

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX80 Point & Shoot is no doubt a good looking ultra compact digital camera with a fancy wide range lens, i.e. 24 mm ultra wide! The camera comes with a 5x optical zoom that increases its power during Intelligent Zoom function to equiv. 10x. The cameras bold features include full HD video making with stereo sound, a 12 megapixel sensor with high speed shooting at up to 4fps. Also, comprises a 3-inch LCD touch screen with a easy navigating system for beginners and professionals alike. It has a wide range of creative filters from Expressive, Retro, High & Low key to Sepia, Toy effect, Soft focus and plenty others. Edge is delivered to it by its function of Aesthetic retouch. It has a good functioning O.I.S.AF Tracking, Intelligent ISO Control, Face Detection, Intelligent Scene Selector and Intelligent Exposure.

Design and Build Quality

The camera comes with a metal body, a power button, shutter and zoom rocker on its top. Also, a dedicated video recording button on its rear for instantaneousness regardless of the mode you are in. There is not much grip so a wrist strap won’t hurt on the safe side. This compact camera regardless, slides very effortlessly into your pockets and gives a well built feel. At the left you’ll find the tripod socket. Overall, it has a slim and sturdy build, easy to carry and use. It is light to carry around with a mere weight of 131g, battery included that is and can fit into your pockets with dimensions 96.3mm x 56mm x 19.4 mm. It is available in three color variants of black, pink and white.

Focus and Face Detection

The Intelligent Zoom is also available with the DMC-FX80, which is an enhanced zoom function using digital zoom, allowing the subject to be drawn 2x closer than the original optical zoom with minimum deterioration of image quality, thanks to the Intelligent Resolution technology. It means the 5x optical can virtually extend to 10x equivalent. Face detection ability is provided in this Panasonic LUMIX DMC-FX80, once the subject is locked via your manual touch the camera’s AF -function with track the subject even after you’ve released your touch. The detection is done almost anywhere on the screen and then optimal settings such as focus and exposure, are presented.

Lens and Image Stabilization

The lens for Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX80 is an excellent 24 – 120mm, as a 35mm equivalent, for a 5x optical zoom with maximum apertures of excellent f/2.5 wide angle and f/6.4 at telephoto. It allows the usage of higher shutter speed but captures clear, sharp and blur less images even in low light environment. Being an advanced lens unit that passes Leica’s strict standards and presents you an exceptional optical performance with minimum distortion while it eliminates flaring. To counter blur caused by handshakes Panasonic provides you with the Mega O.I.S. Words that even the bit of a shake is sharply deducted by a sampling frequency of 4k times per second, which it works to give you clear images. The O.I.S. also provides you the ability to shoot in dimly lit environments, as well as working with macro and zoom in shots! The Active mode, moreover efficiently maligns blurs in video recording especially at wide angle while subjects are moving. With smart features like these you can leave your work to be done by the camera.

Screen and Menus

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX80 features a 3-inch LCD including the touch ability. Instant Auto Focus is immediately set to the subject by just touching it on the screen and you can so release the shutter. As for the menu, since the camera is touch screen menus shall be accessible through its 3-inch screen on its rear. Modes and options alike can be accessed with the shortcuts on the screens right. For the fun part, they can be customized to be set according to your needs. The Panasonic menus are effluent to navigate with the camera providing clean text and built in help showing what each option does.

The camera is mouthed to last for 210 shots approximately. The camera is recharged using the provided USB cable connected to a computer or the given AC adapter.

Video Mode

Despite of Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX80 being compact it is capable of recording full HD 1,920 x 1,080 60i (NTSC) / 50i (PAL) videos in AVCHD, this format is highly compatible with AV equipments such as HDTVs and Blu ray Disc players. The recorded videos can later be replayed by inserting memory card or connecting it with a mini HDMI cable. A special dedicated button on the top lets you immediately start recording videos in the middle of shooting mood. A good alternative is presented which provides higher compatibility with PC’s, the MP4 format at 30fps for video recording. The kick is given in by the presence of the Active Mode, that provides balance and image stabilization in video recording, countering your blurs for easy video making. This mode enhances active video recording at wide angle, e.g. as you shoot in motion, this will reduce the degrading of quality. Both full 5X zoom and iA (Intelligent Auto) is available during video recording. Lastly it’s presented with a stereo sound, which is coupled with a Noise Reduction System and the slightly special Auto Wind cut function that cuts out most noise from the background wind.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX80 caters a 12.1-MP CCD with superior 2-channel signal output that allows a higher and efficient signal transfer speed for each and every operation, especially those which require efficient performance and speed such as the incorporated full HD video recording and high speed continuous shooting. Thanks to this sensor, the picture quality is improved greatly and this gets possible by the light capture using larger on-chip micro lenses.

The camera is to be given its share due with all the magnificent features it delivers, it’s mega plus points come with the f/2.5 wide angle glorious aperture, a good 3-inch touch LCD screen, full HD video shooting with stereo sound and also its 4fps continuous shooting.

Setbacks for this one comes with the lack of Manual Controls, Occasional Red Eye and a rather poor Tripod socket position.
