Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ1000 Black - Expert Reviews
A large rubber hand grip extends round the back of the cam with a raised ridge for your thumb to rest. The handling and design of this cam reminds you of GH4. The quality of the images captured is quite remarkable for one can catch great bokeh shots from this camera. For macro shots, the camera allows you to focus on the subjects that are 1cm away from the lens when you are using full zoom. The lens is good for shooting flowers as you get remarkable background blur. Overall, this new camera, Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ1000 has lot to offer from long zoom to 4K video feature.
Design and Build Quality
There are a lot of controls that come in direct reach. The OLED electronic viewfinder allows for good, clean view with a resolution of 2356k dots. Changes made to the exposure or color settings get quickly reflected in the image. The 921k dots LCD allows for clear and detailed view and it being vari-angle, allows the freedom of catching shots that are odd angled. You can take above the head shots, below the waist shots etc. Had the screen been a touch-sensitive one, focusing could have been easier.
Focus and Face Detection
Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ1000 is the second camera from Panasonic that uses depth from defocus technology. This technology was first presented by Lumix GH4 wherein, it understands the characteristics of lens' bokeh and measures the distance the subject is from the lens. There is the contrast detection autofocus system. The focusing speed of the camera has improved notably over the previous cameras. Also, face detection is possible here.
Lens and Image Stabilization
Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ1000 uses a 25-400mm equivalent, 16x zoom Leica DC Vario-Elmarit lens. The maximum aperture range covers f/2.8 to f/4.0. The optical formula is that there are 15 elements within 11 groups involving 4 ED lenses and 5 aspherical lenses of which, three are double-sided. The zoom is handled electronically. Speed can be controlled in five steps and same zooming can be done while capturing videos. The image stabilization feature is of optical type wherein, in 4k video capture, you get a 5-axis image stabilization. Also, active mode offers greater stabilization for sub-4k videos.
Screen and Menus
Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ1000 comes with a 3 inches wide LCD having resolution of 921k dots. It is a vari-angle screen, so, you can take the odd shots. The screen is not touch sensitive though. The electronic viewfinder that comes with the cam is of OLED type with a dot resolution of 2359k. It also holds an eye-detection sensor such that when you hold the cam to the eye, it will switch to the EVF - all by itself. Through the EVF, the view is clean and detailed and the refresh rate is fine. The menu system is quick and you can read easily. Under the quick menu displays, there are 12 settings.
Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ1000 runs on a proprietary 1,200mAh, 7.2V, Li-ion rechargeable DMW-BLC12 battery. As per CIPA testing standards, the total shot count over a full charged battery with LCD use is 360. However, the use of electronic viewfinder would consume more battery life.
Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ1000 records videos at 4K resolution, thus effectively translating to 3840 x 2160 pixels at a frame rate of 25 or 30fps. You can also shoot Full HD videos at 50p, 60p and 100fps rates. Also, 8MP stills can be captured while recording videos. Features like focus peaking, pinpoint focus, face detection, eye detection and zebra display are available for both, stills and videos. There are a number of formats in which videos can be contained, most popular of them include; AVCHD and MP4. These formats help in easy editing, sharing and transfer of images. Videos at VGA resolution can also be shot. Slow motion videos can be achieved in Full HD resolution, something that is quite appreciable.
Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ1000 houses an 1-inch CMOS high sensitivity MOS image sensor with a megapixel count of 20.1- the same size used by Sony RX10. Coming to ISO sensitivity, the range covers 125 to 12800 equivalents. The lower-end can be lowered more to ISO80 while the upper-end can be extended to ISO25600.
