Panasonic Lumix DMC G6 14-42mm - Expert Reviews
Panasonic Lumix DMC G6 is an update of Panasonic Lumix DMC G5 with notable improvements such as OLED electronic viewfinder, inbuilt Wi-Fi, low light autofocus and panorama mode. The styling of the camera is like a compact DSLR. The new lens that has been put up is a compact 14-140mm HD zoom lens alongwith the optical image stabilization feature and a bright aperture. There are two custom modes on the dial namely, C1 and C2. Other features include; mic socket, multi-exposure, HDR, manual movie options and stop motion / time-lapse movie creation.
Design and Build Quality
Panasonic Lumix DMC G6 is larger than G5 and is a lot like a compact DSLR. The rubber handgrip is good and there are textured rubber grips at the back and left sides of the cam. At the front, there is a rubber cover that can be opened and at the back, you would find a mic socket. There are in total, five function buttons that can be found on the camera that can be customised. Two function buttons can be availed on screen as well.
Focus and Face Detection
Panasonic Lumix DMC G6 offers the following focusing modes - Autofocus, Manual, Spot, Face Detection, AF Tracking, Multi, Centre and Touch AF.
Lens and Image Stabilization
Panasonic Lumix DMC G6 offers a compact 14-140mm HD zoom lens with optical image stabilization feature. Detailing by the camera is quite good at both ends of the lenses and it does not matter as to which lens you choose, for almost all will perform well. Macro performance is a bit of a let down and for good macro shots, a separate macro lens is recommended. Chromatic aberrations and purple fringing are both low, and camera correction is present too. The exposure of the camera is reliable and helps to cope with a number of situations. Lens flare is avoided by supplied deep petal shaped hood. Optical image stabilization is present.
Screen and Menus
Panasonic Lumix DMC G6 comes with an ‘easy to use’ menu system where the explanation of any option that is currently on display, gets projected at the screen's top. The menus can be operated via touchscreen that make it more intuitive to use, moreover, if you are familiar with touchscreen devices, then it will be easy to get along the menu system of this camera. In terms of focus and shutter response, the camera is particularly impressive. The screen is 3 inches wide with a resolution of 1036k dots. With touchscreen, you can swipe through the photos in playback mode, focus over any area of the screen or can simply make use of the screen to take photos. The touch is responsive and you need not push too hard to have things done.
Panasonic Lumix DMC G6 comes rated with 340 shots battery life as per CIPA/Panasonic testing. The life of the lithium-ion battery is same as the one on Panasonic Lumix G5. An extended use of Wi-Fi would reduce the battery life, therefore, a spare one is always recommended. You can also get a battery charger in the bundle.
Panasonic Lumix DMC G6 offers improved video recording performance over G5. The compression used is of AVCHD/MP4 format with a frame rate of 24/50p. Videos get recorded in Full HD format and there are filter effects and full manual controls too. The front of the camera features a socket for mic along with inbuilt stereo mics as well. Extra Tele Conv function crops up from the frame's centre, thus allowing you a zoomed in full high definition video without any loss in quality. A power zoom lens is recommended should you want to use the optical zoom.
The given manual zoom can be difficult, since it is not that smooth. Under the talked mode, you can alter aperture/shutter speed with dial at the back of the cam, where the thumb rests. The resolutions for video are 1920 x 1080 pixels (Full HD), 1280 x 720 pixels (HD) and 640 x 480 pixels (VGA). Videos in AVCHD Full HD and MP4 Full HD can be recorded at 50fps and 25fps respectively with the attendant sound in stereo format.
Panasonic Lumix DMC G6 uses a Live Metal Oxide sensor, the size of which is Micro Four thirds in form. The height and width of the pixels are 4608 and 3456 respectively. Again, the width and height of the sensor are 17.3mm and 13mm. The aspect ratios are 4:3, 16:9, 3:2 and 1:1. Coming to the ISO noise performance, the range of sensitivity has been extended and now, it begins from ISO160 and goes up to 25600ISO. Noise levels are low at ISO400, ISO200 and ISO160. There is a bit of increase in noise at ISO800. Up to ISO3200, there is slight improvement in the noise, while detail is still retained when compared to G5. At ISO6400, the noise increases and detail drops. ISO12800 is where noise is noticeable and setting must be avoided, but still the results are better than G5. ISO25600, must be avoided as it shows lot of noise. Although noice has been improved over G5, G6 does not match the standards of Olympus OM-D E-M5 at high ISO levels.
