Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ20 Point & Shoot - Expert Reviews

Overall Review

Panasonic, personally, feels more like an underdog giant in a market that is totally owned more or less by two entities named Canon and Nikon. Although, there is no denying that Panasonic has its shares of riches and enough “moolah” to make it way beyond just a successful firm, but as of now, at this time, it is one of the biggest players in the world but certainly not the best. The joint owner of the Micro Four Thirds technology alongside Olympus which faces a similar fate as Panasonic, has launched its new weapon in the L series of superzoom cameras, Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ20 Point & Shoot, a new compact device whose headline specifications are 16-megapixel CCD imager, 25-525mm equivalent lens with optical image stabilisation, and a 3” LCD screen with a resolution of 460,000 dots and ofcourse, the 21x optical zoom. The lens unit of this device has a total of 12 elements which are organised in 9 groups which include 3 aspherical lens elements and 5 aspherical surfaces. Also, in addition to the famous “Intelligent Auto” function from Panasonic, this device also covers a manual exposure mode, which is most probable to ppeal more photographers. Now let us discuss major specifications of Panasonic Lumix LZ20.

The headline feature of this device, a powerful 21x optical zoom lens is enough to draw the subjects right up close with 16.1-megapixel full-resolution. This allows the photographer to capture fast moving scenes, along with the natural expressions of people and animals, and highly detailed images which can hardly be captured by two bare eyes. There is availability of an extra Optical Zoom function which can use the center part of the CCD such that it extends this 21x zoom ratio to humungous 48.5x zoom. The O.I.S. which stands for Optical Image Stabilizer is celebrated for its high correction performance against blur caused by a hand-shake. It is waged effectively without decline of image quality. The 25 mm ultra wide-angle lens of this device has twice as much shooting capacity as a standard 35mm lens. This leads to the enhancement of pretty much all kinds of shooting situations, take for an example that you are photographing a group of people in a party or shooting a big object or a huge palace or some kind of a sweeping landscape while travelling.

Also Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ20 provides the user with very easy to use manual control, the user-machine interface in this device is lovely. You can set the aperture to control the depth of field, and adjust the shutter speed to freeze moving subjects or create a motion blur that exaggerates the feeling of movement. Coming right down the movie recording capabilities of this device, Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ20 cannot record images in 1080p Full HD which is definitely a huge setback, but it can record movies in 720p HD quality at 30 frames per second in Motion JPEG format. The Panorama Shot Mode makes it is possible to shoot a horizontal / vertical panoramic image with consequent shots taken by overlaying the previous image. Panasonic DMC LZ20 flaunts a big 3.0 inch screen throughout its rear at has a 460k pixel resolution with a 100% field of view. There is also an acclaimed Intelligent LCD function with use of which brightness is automatically adjusted according to the conditions around.

Design and Build Quality

Measuring 119.1mm x 76.5mm x 79.8mm in dimensions to be exact, Panasonic Lumix DMC LZ20 is quite a compact device which is easy to handle, and the hard finishing provides decent grip. When included with a Battery and SD memory card Panasonic Lumix DMC LZ20 measures 499 gms and 390 gms without battery and memory card. The camera also houses an in-built flash with the flash modes Auto, Auto with Red-eye Reduction, Forced On, Slow Sync with Red-eye Reduction, Forced Off and flash range 0.6 - 6.8 m (W, ISO Auto), 0.6 - 3.6 m (T, ISO Auto).

Focus and Face Detection

Made especially for the beginners, Panasonic Lumix LZ20 flaunts the popular iA or Intelligent Auto function which assists the user in any shooting conditions such that minimum mistakes are done, and it does that powerfully as well. This intelligent Auto mode is pretty much a complete collaboration of Optical Image Stabilizer, Face Detection, Intelligent Scene Selector and Intelligent, leave everything else for the camera to do expect aim and click. Face Detection sets appropriate AF/AE while removing unwanted red-eye. Intelligent Exposure corrects the brightness in parts of the image that are too dark due to insufficient lighting, backlighting or use of the flash. The Intelligent Scene Selector automatically selects whichever of 6 Scene modes - Macro, Portrait, Scenery, Night Portrait, Night Scenery and Sunset - that best suit the shooting situation.

Lens and Image Stabilization

One of the headline features of Panasonic Lumix LZ20 is the 21x zoom. As such the focal length varies from 4.5 to 94.5 with 35mm equivalent to 25 - 525 mm, the device also features a Primary RGB color filter. Thanks to the Extra Optical Zoom function the LZ20 can extend zoom power to 48.5x (at 3-megapixel resolution) by using the centre part of the 16-megapixel high resolution CCD. As well as bringing the subject closer, the 25mm ultra wide angle lens can capture approx. 196% wider angle of view compared with a standard 35mm camera, ideal for shooting dynamic landscapes or indoor group portraits.

Screen and Menus

Almost entire rear of Panasonic Lumix LZ20 is covered by a 3.0-inch large 460,000-dot LCD assures high visibility in any lighting circumstances, which is excellent for both shooting and playing back images.

Battery

Panasonic Lumix DMC LZ20 is powered by AA batteries. Although primitive, it still surprisingly manages to bring out 380 shots in one charge.

Video Mode

It is definitely a huge disappointment that Panasonic Lumix DMC LZ20 cannot record videos in Full HD 1920 x 1080 or simply 1080p quality. Yet, it does flaunt video recording in HD 720p quality at the speed of 30 frames per second.

Sensors

Lumix DMC LZ20 flaunts a 16-megapixel high resolution CCD and advanced image processing powerfully supports shooting high quality photos and video. This allows the image processor to great quality images even in high sensitivity recording from ISO 1600 to ISO 6400 with High Sensitivity mode.

Pros

1. Image stabilisation
2. In-camera panoramas
3. Above average battery life
4. Good macro

Cons

1. Slow Focussing
2. No Full HD option
3. Heavy
4. No RAW support
