Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ30 Point & Shoot Black - Expert Reviews

Overall Review

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ30 Point & Shoot in its entirety is an impressive camera with a lot of options you can play and be happy with. Starting off with the excellent 35x optical zoom with 25–875mm range that can also zoom as close as 1cm for macro shots. The camera goes on to feature 16MP sensor, other manual shooting modes, a very clear 3-inch LCD screen, 10 amazing digital filter effects, and the ability to record HD videos. Where the manual shooting modes let creativity breathe, photographers will surely enjoy the easiness the camera’s function provide, beginning with the iAuto mode, scene modes that include HDR, Panorama shot scene etc. Not to forget the available Optical Image Stabilizer ready to protect your images. At the end of the day, this camera in either Black or Red, can support you for as long as 380 shots with 4 AA batteries. If you’re a person with a limited budget but don’t want to hold back on a genuinely good photographing experience, Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ30 Point & Shoot might be good to look into.

Design and Build Quality

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ30 Point & Shoot appears and feels like a smaller DSLR. The body is completely plastic along with a rubberized hand grip and a square on the back meant as a thumb rest. In regards to size and weight i.e. 465 grams and 123.8mm x 83.7mm x 91.4mm in its dimension, the camera is neither so small as to fit in your pocket so a camera bag may be a pleasing choice when you carry it around. The back of the camera is graced by a 3-inch LCD 460K dot resolution screen. As for the flash, it pops open with a button on the side of the camera. On top you’ll discover the mode dial, the zoom rocker and shutter release button, movie recording button and an on/off button. Besides the screen, you’ll discover many other buttons with a d-pad. The buttons for the size of the camera are small, so you might have a struggle managing them.

Focus and Face Detection

In regards to focusing, the camera provides with numerous focusing modes: Autofocus, Spot focus, Face Detection, AF tracking, Multi, Centre and Zoom Macro. With minimum focus closing in as deep as 1cm for your macro shots. Focusing in Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ30 Point & Shoot is rather slow and impatient users may find it difficult to deal with. Face detection is there in the camera, operates well and results in clarity for individual faces, so subjects in portraits and group photos will enjoy substantial clarity, as they deserve.

Lens and Image Stabilization

The camera comes with a sharp 35x optical zoom lens with a vast range of 25–875mm. The lens’ zoom is a remarkable feature and with a 16.1 megapixel sensor it lets you shoot a variety of scenes from sports to natural, portraits to landscapes, all very vibrant and detailed. The wide angle of 23mm is another advantage and people who like taking pictures of large structures, landscapes, group photos etc will enjoy toying with it. Though you can notice softer edges in your photographs, the centre of it is still magnificent. There is an Extra Optical Zoom function that uses the CCD sensor to extend the 35X zoom ration to a powerful 78.8x zoom. The only set back to the camera is its poor picture taking ability in shadowy environments. The lens also has a minimum focusing distance of just 1 cm allowing it to deliver very satisfactory macro shots. As for Image Stabilization, the camera operates with an Optical Image Stabilizer that kills to its best abilities blurs cause by handshake, often experienced heavily when your targeted scene is zoomed, to secure image quality.

Screen and Menus

A 3-inch LCD screen with a 460K dot resolution graces Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ30 Point & Shoot's rear. The screen is a decent spread, bright, easy to operate in most light conditions, thus leaving little to complaints. The menu system too is an easily operating feature where your text is big enough to read clearly, attached with it a sentence or phrase to explain what each option is designated to do. The delete button gives you entry to the Q. Menu that simplifies your access to the main process, such as ISO, drive modes, resolution, white balance, etc.

Battery

The camera uses a set of AA batteries, this comes in the box with a basic starter guide, a warranty card and a software CD. The Battery compartment lies directly under the hand grip and shares its compartment with the memory card. According to CIPA test results we take a look at an amazing 380 shots that Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ30 Point & Shoot can last. The battery life is a definite feature that’ll incline buyers to look at this camera.

Video Mode

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ30 Point & Shoot can very well record HD videos in Motion JPEG format. There is a dedicated ‘Motion picture button’ resting on the top of the camera just for you to reach easily to switch from clicking photos to recording videos. The same button can be used once the video is being made to stop. The camera uses a 1280 x 720 pixels resolution with a 30 frames per second speed. Optical zoom is sadly absent during recording.

Sensors

The camera operates under a good 16.1 Megapixel 1/2.3 inch CCD image sensor. The processes are all done at an acceptable pace and the image quality is decent too. Though there are times you can experience noise issues but on the scales of exposure and sharpness, the images are very eloquent.

Pros

* Excellent value for money
Decent screen resolution
Optical image stabilization
Manual controls
Rubberised grip
Excellent battery life

Cons

* No viewfinder
Focusing is slow
Continuous shooting isn't particularly fast
Panoramas aren't stitched well enough
