Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ40 Black - Expert Reviews

Overall Review

Panasonic Lumix DMC LZ40 camera comes with a 42x optical zoom lens that covers a focal length of 22-924mm in its 35mm equivalents. Behind the lens is a 20MP CCD sensor that gives high resolution photos. The camera holds a mode dial at the top along with a dedicated manual mode for enhanced photography. Manual controls are limited and the intelligent auto setting comes with face detection, intelligent scene selector and intelligent exposure, which allow you to shoot sans worries like adjusting the settings of the camera. Also, there are 15 filters that include sepia, miniature effect and soft focus, which enable you to personalize what you are shooting. Overall, the device works just about fine and is an affordable bridge camera.

Design and Build Quality

Panasonic Lumix LZ40 feels like a chunky camera when you hold it in your hands. The hand grip is all oversized and gives a feeling of holding a SLR. It is 126mm thick and so, there is no way of it being called a pocket friendly camera. It is made of plastic and you get a feeling of hollowness, for the inside of the grip happens to be empty. As you would expect from Panasonic to deliver good quality devices, LZ40 too does have a nice build quality, it is just that it is not a high end one. Since it is a bridge camera, some may confuse it with a SLR but that shouldn’t happen as there is no optical or electronic viewfinder. You frame the view and review your shots by a 3-inch wide LCD.

The resolution of the screen is 360k dots and appears to be quite basic, for there are other cameras in the same price range that offer screen with resolution as high as 920k dots. The physical controls are limited as well. At the top, there is a mode dial, but no shutter or aperture priority modes on the camera. The only closest manual mode is the exposure control mode. The interface is also basic than many cameras in the Lumix line-up that are expensive. This simple camera can prove to be quite good for beginners nurturing photography as a hobby. One key change that has been made over the last model, LZ 30 is that LZ40 makes use of a rechargeable Li-ion battery over 4x AA batteries. It also supports charging over microUSB as well.

Focus and Face Detection

Panasonic Lumix LZ40 comes with a massive zoom power of up to 42x. The maximum aperture range is of f3.0 – f6.5 and the focal length covered is from 22mm to 924mm. The focus modes used are Autofocus, Contrast Detect (sensor), Multi-area, Center, Tracking, Single, Continuous, Face Detection and Live View. Also, there is an autofocus assist lamp. The digital zoom zooms in by 2x and there is no provision for manual focus and the minimum focal length for macro focus shots is 1cm. Moreover, there are a total of 9 focus points.

Lens and Image Stabilization

Panasonic Lumix LZ40 makes use of a high zoom lens wherein, with a zoom power of up to 42x optical, the zoom length covers a focal length of 22-924mm. Both the ends, wide-angle and telephoto positions are quite notable. The lens when fully open is quite wide and the focal length is quite immense by 924mm. Also, there is an optical image stabilization feature, but when you have zoomed in fully, you would need a tripod for even stabilized shots. The f stop rating for the aperture is f/3-6.5 over the entire zoom range, and after you have achieved full optical zoom, you can use the digital zoom for more magnification. So, overall, the zoom power becomes up to 84x. The movement of the lens becomes a bit jittery as you zoom more and more.

Screen and Menus

Panasonic Lumix LZ40 makes use of a 3 inches wide TFT 460k dots resolution screen that offers LiveView as well. The menu system has been laid out quite well.

Panasonic Lumix LZ40 comes with a Li-ion battery that can be charged within the camera and holds a shot life of 320 shots. The battery is of high capacity and allows continuous shoot of up to 5+ hours. Inside the bundle also comes the charger. With the battery and memory card, the camera weighs 524 grams. The capacity of the battery is of 1250mAh.

Video Mode

Panasonic Lumix LZ40 records videos in High Definition and can use the intelligent auto feature as well as optical image stabilization. The videos can be captured in 30 frames per second only along with a Motion JPEG type compression. The resolutions exploited are HD at 30p, VGA at 30p and 320 x 240 at 30p frame rates respectively. The microphone for recording audio is mono and the speaker too is intrinsically set to mono.

Panasonic Lumix LZ40 has an impressive lens magnification but the images become limited by the presence of a basic sensor. The sensor used here is a 20MP CCD type of 1/2.33 inch in size. The predecessor, LZ30 made use of a 16MP resolution sensor. The images can only be shot in JPEG format but videos can be shot in motion JPEG, MP4 and AVCHD formats. The aspect ratios used here are 3:2, 16:9, 4:3 and 1:1. The image quality achieved from the given sensor is good but not great and the credit goes entirely to the lens and sensor. The accompanying image processing engine is Venus, which as per the maker's claim, works speedily.
