Panasonic Lumix DMC TZ40Point and Shoot camera possesses an 18 megapixels high sensitivity metal oxide sensor that can shoot at a frame rate of 10fps. The 20x optical zoom extends over the focal length range of 24mm at wide-angle end and 480mm at telephoto end, in 35mm terms. This can be extended up to 40x with intelligent zoom. To keep the imaging part sharp, there is a hybrid optical image stabilization feature and level shot technique for leveling shots that detects the horizontal line and keeps the images straight even when the device is tilted. The inbuilt capability of near field communication and wireless fidelity allows the camera to exchange data between smart devices like tablets and smartphones. The Panasonic image application lets you share pictures from the imager to mobile and handle the camera remotely via wireless connection.
With GPS, you can geotag the images as well. Videos can be recorded in Full HD resolution. The optical zoom feature can be availed while you are recording the videos. The high-speed videos can be gained at 100fps in HD quality. When you are shooting using the iAuto mode, camera settings are adjusted on their own for the given scene. Also, there are full manual controls and a range of scene modes, panoramas and creative control modes. In addition, there is a range of color modes wherein, you can catch unique quality and creative images. The auto white balance works rather well under incandescent lights like the incandescent preset and catches good pictures under the fluorescent light conditions. There is no fluorescent preset in camera.
Design and Build Quality
Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ40 comes inside a compact metal body that is small enough to be carried inside a pocket. The rubber grip is substantial at the front with a dotted portion at the rear for the thumb. The mode dial is at the top alongside zoom rocker, power switch, movie record button and shutter release. There are a number of physical controls at the rear. A Wi-Fi button directs you to Wi-Fi and the map/exposure button doubles. When you are in S/A/M, the exposure button allows you to change the aperture and shutter. When you are in playback mode, you can access the maps function.

The 2, 5 and 10fps burst modes record images in 18.1 megapixels resolution (full HD), 5 megapixels recording at 40fps, 2.5 megapixels recording at 60fps and flash burst restricted to 3 megapixels. After 5 shots, the camera slows down.
Focus and Face Detection
Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ40 offers the following focus modes - Autofocus, Spot, Face Detection, AF Tracking, Multi, Centre, Zoom macro and Touch AF. As mentioned, the minimum focusing distance is of 3cm.
Lens and Image Stabilization
Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ40 comes with an optical zoom of 20x and max aperture range of f/3.3 – f/6.4. In 35mm terms, the focal length range is from 24mm to 480mm. The detail is quite decent at both the ends of the lens. Some purple fringing and chromatic aberration can be observed under contrasting areas when the images are viewed in full size. The minimum focusing distance is of 3cm, which enables the user to take macro shots. The image stabilization feature at work is hybrid OIS+ and level shot for leveling is also present.
Screen and Menus
Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ40 has its rear almost filled with a 3 inches wide touch responsive screen. The resolution of the screen is 910k dots and can be used to choose focal point, control zoom or release shutter. The menu system has been laid out very well and is easier to navigate. The menu button allows you to change the settings for a specific mode you are in like white-balance, ISO etc.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ40 offers a 1/2.3-inch sized 18 megapixels live metal oxide sensor. The width of the pixels is 4896 and height is 3672. The aspect ratio is 4:3, 1:1, 3:2 and 16:9. Coming to the ISO performance, the noise is low at ISO200 and ISO100, a bit of noise though appears at ISO400. There is minor increase in the noise at ISO800 that causes slight softening in the images. At ISO1600, noise increases and the quality of the images reduce. At ISO3200, a lot of detail gets lost, followed by softer images that appear to be smudgy.
