Panasonic Lumix DMC-XS1 Point & Shoot Camera Black - Expert Reviews
Panasonic Lumix DMC XS1 Point and Shoot Camera offers a 16.1MP CCD sensor and an optical zoom lens of up to 5x of power. The focal length is 24-120mm as per 35mm terms, which can get extended to 8x via digital zoom use that Panasonic calls Intelligent zoom. To keep the images sharp, the camera makes use of mega optical image stabilization. There is intelligent auto mode that lets you take pictures easily by configuring the camera to the best of settings for a given scene. Other than the intelligent auto mode, the other intelligent featurers are exposure, scene selector and face detection. 11 filters can be applied on the creative panorama mode along with 13 other filters under the creative control mode. The filters can also be applied within a playback mode by using the creative retouch option. Videos are recorded in high-definition and images that are produced contain good detail and color reproduction and are mostly well-exposed. However, portraits with good skin tones but red-eye are a general problem.
The white balance of the camera is good and is well under, both fluorescent and incandescent lights. The incandescent preset offers a bit of color cast under the incandescent light. There is no fluorescent preset that can be availed, therefore you would have to use the auto white balance. In the panorama mode, you can shoot panoramas via filters - which indeed is a special feature. The panoramas are well joined but the detail achieved isn’t too good but good enough to be shared over the web. XS1 also comes with color modes that can be selected when you are in normal shoot mode. Overall, Panasonic Lumix DMC XS1 Point and Shoot camera is an ultra-thin digital camera that will appeal to the younger generation. It has a metallic body and can be availed in a number of colors. The battery life is decent enough. Although there are cheap entry-level cameras to be found in the market, this one is unique for it is smaller, stylish and inexpensive as well.
Design and Build Quality

The camera is made of a metallic body and makes use of a microSD card to store the images and videos. The physical buttons are quite small and not suitable for large fingers, and so it is difficult to use the power button as it is hard to press. At the top side, there is a shutter release. The buttons at the rear include playback, video recording and delete. There is a d-pad and an assortment of zoom buttons. You can achieve access to timer, flash, exposure compensation and menu system. Navigating the menu system is easy and as per the CIPA ratings one can take 260 shots, which is quite good for a small camera like this.
Shot to shot speed, focusing speed, power on to first shot speed and the overall responsive are good. A number of shots can show the camera’s consistency in this matter and that’s why, it is easy to compare this camera with other cameras. The menu system comes with one line sentences every time at the bottom of the display, which explains the option that you tend to choose. The screen is comparatively small from other contemporary cameras and holds a resolution of 230k dots. The screen can be viewed under sun light as well.

There is not much detail to the images caught by this camera but it is recommended that one should resize the images to be shared over the web and so, one must not go for large prints. Some purple fringing can be observed in areas under high contrast but it gets well controlled. The lens comes with a minimum focus of 5cm, which means you can get decent macro shots.
Screen and Menus
Panasonic Lumix DMC XS1 Point & Shoot Camera holds a menu system that is easy to navigate. Every time there is a sentence at the bottom of the LCD screen, it explains the option that has been highlighted. The screen is small as compared to the other modern cameras with 230k dots resolution. You can also view the screen in sunlight.

XS1 uses a 16.1MP CCD sensor, which has low noise in the ISO range of ISO200 and ISO100. The images become a bit soft at ISO400 and softer at ISO800 and at 1600ISO, it is the softest but still not much of the detail is lost.
