Pentax K-3 - Expert Reviews
Pentax has been consistent in the production of outstanding DSLRs that are well-designed. Pentax K 3 follows in the same tradition and comes with improved autofocus. The resolution is increased, images are all clean and it all makes up for an expensive yet worthy kit. It is an all weather camera that is best suited for professionals.
Design and Build Quality
Pentax K-3's design and build quality are somewhat the same as of other Pentax DSLRs and SLRs, for the imaging giant follows the tradition of making solid and strong devices. The existing users will find some of the buttons to have been moved and controls slightly altered, but there is nothing that can't be adapted quickly. The photographic feel of the camera is all new with well carved ergonomic layout and menus. Much of the K-5 and K-7 that remained unchanged have been put up here. Some of the tweaks caused are with dioptre adjustment wheel, SD card side access and mode dial lock - which can be disengaged. The screen at the back flaunts a monitor that is similar to other DSLRs within the Pentax Range. With this screen, you can easily alter the parameters. There are a number of dedicated buttons and a new switch to choose, either video or still photography. There is a traditional glass pentaprism that is common to all the Pentax DSLRs range. The pentaprism does provide for clarity of view though adding to the cost. The gapless monitor prevents condensation under the glass cover and results in bright, clear and crisp images.
Focus and Face Detection
Pentax K-3 comes with the following focusing modes - Autofocus, Manual, Spot, AF Tracking, Multi, Centre and AF Fine Tuning.
Lens and Image Stabilization
Pentax K-3 gets shipped with SMC Pentax-DA 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 ED AL [IF] DC WR lens and one can say, they make up for a perfect cam-lens combo. The lens has enough resolution in reserve to match the increased pixel count and so, it works better with K-3 than K-5. Chromatic aberration seems to have been cut down and images are clearer as compared to the previous models. This 18-35mm lens complements K-3. The flare is all taken care of, in case you are more cautious, then you can use the lens hood. Within the range of Pentax lenses, there are new HD lenses that come with enhanced nano coatings. The camera does provide the image stabilization feature.
Screen and Menus
Pentax K-3 comes with a well-designed interface and an ergonomic layout. The screen at the back is a lot similar to other DSLRs within the Pentax range. The screen is 3.2 inches wide LCD type with 1037k dots resolution and no space for air.
Pentax K-3 uses the same battery that is used in K-5 range of cameras. The accessories used are also the same. The battery grip is though different by minor margins, therefore, a new D-BG5 grip can be availed. The battery life of the camera is the same as in K-5, with 500 shots you would still get enough time for playback. As CIPA has quoted, indeed with 560 shots, you can still make up for 50 percent of flash usage. The camera uses a rechargeable lithium-ion battery of D-LI90P type.
Pentax K-3 records videos in Full HD format. The frame rates used are 24, 25, 30, 50i and 60i. There is no stereo sound recording, only monaural. You can avail of optical zoom while recording the video. The video resolutions used are only of two types - HD (1280 x 720 pixels) and Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels). Changes from K-5 to K-3 that come under this mode are; encoding will now be done in AVC/H.264. For stereo sound recording, you would have to use external mics and for that a headphone jack will be provided. The level for sound can be managed within the camera with metering level being provided as well. The camera has gotten more sophisticated in terms of recording moving images. You have have ease of access to dedicated stills and video switch. The shake reduction feature cuts the shake and the reproduction is quite smooth. Custom image and digital filters can be availed too under movie mode.
Pentax K-3 sports a 24.35 megapixels CMOS type APS-C sized sensor along with AA filter simulator. The width and height of the pixels are 6016 and 4000 respectively. Again, the width and height of the sensor are 23.5mm and 15.6mm. The aspect ratios exploited are; 3:2 and 16:9. The sensor delivers full detail to the image and that is the benefit of K-3. When you compare the results of K5 and K3, then the latter would seem to offer clearer and crisper images. Due to the increase in pixel density, noise levels might go higher than expected but that has to be if cleaner reproduction of detail is required. You can avail of ISO levels up to 1600, freely. At ISO1600, some noise do appear and at ISO3200, more noise kicks in. By ISO12800, some sharpness is taken care of while noise becomes obvious, yet acceptable. At ISO51200 and ISO25600, you get a lot of noise, so using these settings must be a careful attempt.
