Pentax K-S1 Body Kit with DA L 18-55mm White - Expert Reviews

Overall Review

Pentax K-S1 feels really compact in hand and is even smaller than some of the bridge cameras, giving back a solid feel. KAF2 mount, which has been used in the previous camera is used here too providing an opportunity to hold onto a number of lenses that are old as well as new. The lens though doesn't come with conventional weather sealing. The camera has used a low cost lens named SMC f.3.5-5.6 Pentax 18-55mm DA-L AL, taking its toll on a number of features like metallic mount, quick shift focus and lens, but instead of these the image quality has been kept the same, like in ones in the expensive versions.

The field of view is 100 percent with a proper glass pentaprism, which is indeed a nice feature given its price. Live view can also be availed through a dedicated button at the backside of the cam. The familiar mode selection dial has been removed by a collar dial that closes on four way physical controls. The arrangement is unusual but if we switch the lights on via the menu system, it gets illuminated. Overall, this new compact DSLR is amazing to use and will suit both the intermediate photographers and professionals.

Design and Build Quality

Pentax K-S1 holds quite a solid build and is a well made imaging device. The handling of this camera is a bit different as compared to the earlier Pentax models and takes a while for the user to get used to it. The bright illuminated rear dials can prove to be useful enough for counting the timer down, moreover, they can also be switched off. The mode dial has changed and is now placed at the rear side of the device about the four way controller. The camera feels more compact than the previous versions. The dial cannot be conveniently operated but is firm enough not to be moved accidentally.

Focus and Face Detection

Pentax K S1 body kit delivers the following focusing modes; Centre, AF Tracking, Face Detection, Multi, Spot, Manual and Autofocus.

Lens and Image Stabilization

Pentax K-S1 comes with a 18-55mm SMC Pentax-DA AL lens covering an aperture range of f/3.5-5.6 over the entire focal length range. It is a standard not so costly zoom where the lens mount is made of plastic. The QuickShift function has been removed, allowing manual adjustments that can be made whenever one chooses. No lens hood has been supplied. The lens doesn't match the standards of the previous lenses offered in Pentax cameras.

At open aperture, the lens zooms just fine and at middle aperture, the spot produces soft lens and as we go on, the images become softer. The lens is adequate and free of flare. After buying the camera should someone wants better imaging, he/she can turn to high quality lenses. Lenses like 18-135mm or 16-85mm will make up for good options. The image stabilization is achieved by sensor shift based mechanism. A simulator for anti-aliasing filter is being provided in cameras produced after K-3, making it an effective implementation.

Screen and Menus

Pentax K-S1 has its menu system restyled, wherein the actual layout and content remain the same as in the previous Pentax cameras. The 3-inch wide LCD screen holds a resolution of 921k dots.

Battery

Pentax K-S1 supports a Pentax D-LI109 lithium ion battery pack that is rated with 480 shots as per the CIPA testing standard on a full charge. This breaks down to 410 shots should you use the flash for half of the time. You might have to let the camera go through a number of charge cycles to utilize its maximum potential. If you are to do image and video playback, the shot count will definitely fall down. The lithium-ion battery pack is labeled as D-LI109 and is charged by D-BC109.

Video Mode

Pentax K-S1 records videos in mp4/h.264 format at full HD resolution. It contains an in-built stereo mic with an adjustable level to record sound. At one go, up to 25 minutes of a video can be recorded -  taking 4GB of video size. It also relates to the fact that while you are recording the video, the internal temperature must not reach critical levels. The SR mode and digital filters can also be applied in video mode. There is a dedicated power button for the movie mode, which makes easy capture of movies. The quality of video is good enough and seems to have enhanced over the previous models. The frame rates at which videos can be recorded are 24, 25, and 30fps. The optical zoom can also be utilized.

Sensors

Pentax K-S1 provides the user with a Sony 20.2MP CMOS APS-C sized sensor with pixel's width of 5472 units and height of 3648 units. The aspect ratio used is of 3:2. The ISO response of this model is a bit different than in the other models. For up to ISO800, there is no noise. The noise begins to creep in at ISO1600 and becomes worse than what you'd see in K-5. At ISO6400, the images are usable since the grain and noise aren't too much in the eyes. ISO 12,800 is quite noisy and at ISO 51200, both noise and color go away. High ISO values up to 3200ISO mark can be used for fine photography and for special effects or the Internet.
