Excellent product with one Huge problem. . .
by IMTIAZ KALBURGI on 2014-04-30
This camera reached me last evening within 48 hours of ordering it. Although the packing was not impressive thankfully the product was in shape.
I am a Pentax old timer. I started with MZ-50 film based SLR for which I had four good lenses. a 55-80mm, a 100-300mm and an 800-1200mm telephoto. They are very dear to me, so buying a Pentax that can take different flavours of K mounts was critical to me. Thank God all my lenses fit into this new baby well.
No Focus points in the view finder is one huge disappointment with this camera. If you are doing macro or when the object is behind a mettle curtain, or there is a flag post in front of the object or in such cases it is just impossible to focus. There is no way you can control the focus that keep jumping and place it at one point. Invariable you will have to switch to manual focus to get the desired result.
I am used to manual, but many of my friends just can't manage with manual focus such people will simply go crazy with it. The size of the camera and grip are good. It feels good and easy to focus.
I wonder why the AA battery case is not provided with the camera, is that such an expensive piece that we have to order that separately.. that is ridiculous to me. It is not even half dollar worth and it is called an accessory to be paid for.
I mounted my old 55-80mm auto focus lens that was kept away for almost a decade, and it worked like magic. In fact it is faster than the lens supplied with the camera. So far the experience has been good. I wish the focus management would have been better in the equipment.

Just to be clear, this review is about the camera and not the seller. I had ordered the same from amazon and had to return it as 50 - 200 zoom lens was missing. The return and everything was smooth though.
Anyways, now coming to the camera, I must say I am in love with it. You look at the specs itself, it kind of stands tall with the well known heavyweights of Canon and Nikon. Having said that, the on ground performance doesn't let you down. In a nutshell, you wont get a pentaprism viewfinder and a double dial in this price bracket, period!
With regard to performance, it is a sturdy workhorse with a few minor glitches. There are no focus points in this model and the kit zoom lens is pretty noisy in auto-focus and keeps hunting. But other then that, its an amazingly smooth performer. Low light photography is pretty good with the noise level at a minimum and color reproduction is pretty good too.
Now, for photography enthusiasts, let me tell you this camera is for you if you are not too brand conscious (though this is a world class brand and is known all over the globe) and more performance oriented and most importantly, if you are on a tight budget. It is not a very user-friendly camera though it has a hell lot of features which as I said earlier, you will find in higher mid-range cameras. Would request anyone who buys the camera to go through the user-manual from cover to cover and you will soon discover magic in your fingers (no pun intended!!)
Another interesting point about this camera is its lenses. Though you will get new lenses splashed all over the net, you can also use the older Pentax lenses on this camera. Lucky if you have a few or if you can get resourceful, can end up buying real good ones at dirt cheap rate!!!
Just one piece of advice.. Pentax has stopped the production of this camera as they are trying to promote its bigger brother K-50 (which is water and dust resistant and does have the focus points all right but makes you lighter by another 15 k.) Hence, if budget is a factor for you and the above things makes sense to you, GO GRAB ONE!!

I received my First Dream DSLR after so much research and after final shortlisted Nikon D3300, Canon EOS 600D , Sony A58 and Pentax K-500.....i finalised this outstanding gear with the help of AMAZON at CHEAPER Rate.
As i was doing Macro wild life photography with my smart phone ... i want to go one step ahead and finally got this camera from AMAZON.
I just spent two days with the camera and my findings are below :
About product and amazon:
Camera imported in Nov,13 in india and bettery is of year 2012 so its not Fresh piece.
Camera Bag is home made but better than expectation.
8 GB Card is Class 4 so need Class 10 Card for better performance
Amazon Service, Packing is outstanding ... even we can use Debit card on COD...infact i have not used it.
Camera Pros :
Outstanding Clarity and manual functions on hand
18-55mm is the smoothest from the above competitors' camera i mentioned.
Higher ISO, Dual Battery option, Inbuilt Shake Reduction mechanism is some of the feature i finalised this product...as in future you can purchase any low cost Lens with thour OIS/Stabilisation mechanism and getting good result.
Screen clarity and userfriendliness is outstanding
Focusing speed is also as per my expectations...as manually i shot some macro, some flying bees etc...in the morning.
TO insert Lithium batter need extensive care of inner plastic part
As batter is old so got charged in 30-40 mins but not able to get more than 250 shots... !
I am not aware or confident on the service and spare if i need help in future
Still not utilised all the functions and features....Hope for the best shots ahead.... !!!!
Current Seller Is Faking!
by BRUCE WAYNE on 2016-02-07
Pentax K-500 is already been discontinued worldwide. And MRP of K-500 in India with the Single Kit lens is 29999 and with 39999! So this claimed price of 43k for this particular product is not justified at all. Even if the seller is importing the item, you won't get any Warranty as the product hasn't been Officially Imported by Ricoh India Limited.
And about the product, This is a hell of a Camera for the price it has been offered. Best Entry-level DSLR money can buy. Sturdy Build. Lot's and lots of features that you cannot imagine of a Entry-level DSLR by other Manufacturers. Maybe this is why some dishonest sellers are trying to sell it out in a profiting price even after the discontinuation of this particular camera.
Great Camera for the price..

Pentax K-500 is an entry level DSLR with features unheard in cameras coming at this price range.
** Highlights **
1) A glass pentaprism viewfinder that delivers 100-percent frame coverage.
2) Continous 5fps shooting which is impressive for a budget device.
3) 16 MP APS-C Sensor.
4) Dual dial control system ( with programmable functionality )
5) 3 inches rear LCD with 921k-dot resolution. Unfortunately its not a tiltable one like you see on Sony cameras.
6) Built in shake reduction. As this system is built-into the camera body, it works with almost any lens that you attach to the K-500.
7) Powered by 4 cells AA battery.
8) ISO range of 100-51200
9) 11-point SAFOX IX+ AF system
Pentax K-500 is almost the same as Pentax K-50, which is priced a little higher than this. The main difference between them is that K50 is weather sealed. The image quality coming out of K-500 is great for the price. It produced usable, noise free images upto 3200 ISO. Images lose detail and noise creeps in above that range. Maximum shutter speed of 30 seconds helps in good nightime photography. The video performance coming out of this camera is not that great. It suffers from focusing issues during video recording. There is no port to plugin an external mic and have to use the inbuilt ones. So if video recording is your priority, its better to get cameras like Sony Alpha A58 instead of this.Overall a great value for money budget camera.
