Ricoh GR Digital Camera Black - Expert Reviews

Overall Review

Ricoh GR is conventionally styled camera that houses everything and in more advanced form that a modern digicam does. It features 3 inches wide-screen with resolution of 1.2 million dots. You can frame your shots via the LCD or you can use optional optical viewfinders. The physical controls include button switches and dials that all work responsively well. There is pop flash and hot shoe for any other accessory. Videos can be shot at Full HD resolution, 1080p, at the frame rate of 24/25/30fps with compression H.624. There is function of Full Press Snap. You can go into menu and select a fixed distance 1m, 1.5m, 2m, 2.5m, 5m, or infinity. After that you can simply press the shutter release and the focus would be set to the selected distance. Features that have been included for enthusiasts are White Balance, close-ups, focus assist and eye-fi.

Design and Build Quality

Ricoh GR has an unmatched design. The matte black finish, rubber grip and absence of frills represents an established look. Physically it looks like so utterly traditionally styled but has almost all the features inside to make it an advanced digital-camera. The camera does look lightweight but its really more lightweight when held in hand. The wrist strap helps to hold the camera with care. The camera comes with rechargeable battery but you can also make use of AAA batteries. The camera has internal memory of 26MB which and also has memory card slot that sits below battery space. There is a main mode dial that sits on roof to the left of shutter. The dial lets you choose modes like aperture, movie, shutter, manual and scene. In a nutshell, it can be said that Ricoh GR is a well-designed and well-built camera.

Focus and Face Detection

Ricoh GR comes with GR ENGINE V processor that adds to the quality achieved by fast AF. The Autofocus remains proactive as the camera moves so as to keep the subjects in focus. The AF shoot function catches a number of photos at 4fps burst and lets you choose the best. There is AF button at the back, if you want to make use of the above function then while pressing the AF and depressing shutter release at the same time. For macro mode, minimum distance you can focus to is 3.9 inches. Focus speed is appreciably fast. Coming to face detection, Ricoh GR can detect up to 10 faces. The focus modes include; Multi AF (Contrast AF method), Spot AF (Contrast AF method), Pinpoint AF, Subject-tracking AF, Continuous, MF, Snap, infinity and Face recognition priority (only in Auto mode).

Lens and Image Stabilization

Ricoh GR uses 18.3mm f/2.8 Lens (with 35mm equivalent focal length of 28mm). The lens itself comprises of features like high refractive indexes, low dispersive elements and an integrated ND filter. The lens lets you achieve high resolution images with high enough sharpness and low distortion. The lens design is 7 element type with two aspherical elements to less chromatic aberration. The GR doesn't come with image stabilization. And there are two optical viewfinders available, which are sold separately to improve stability and composition.

Screen and Menus

Ricoh GR features a LCD screen with WhiteMagic Technology. The 3.0 inches inches wide LCD displays sharp pictures with resolution of 1,230,000 dots. This white magic technology is backed by Sony that adds white pixels to standard RGB color scheme to enhance the brightness and thus clarity. The camera can be taken outside without fearing the impact of light of blackening out the screen. Coming to menu system, it is fast, clear and clean lets you controls the basics easily like shutter speed, aperture and exposure compensation. Scrolling through or pushing the items AF, MF, ISO, IQ, Aspect ratio gives a feel of ease. Moreover there are enough physical controls that you would feel the need to delve more and more in to menu system.

Battery space is where Ricoh GR lacks. Battery life could have been lot better. Also battery charger hasn't been included in the box. You have to buy a charger for battery from the store. For charging you'd have to link the camera to USB for charging. The power source Li-Ion battery DB-65. On single charge you can catch around 300-400 shots.

Video Mode

Ricoh GR lets you shoot videos at Full HD, 1080p, resolution. The frame rates that you can use it 24, 25 or 30fps with H.264 compression. These get saved to SD cards. The audio comes in via stereo mics on both the sides of lens. There is a built in speaker for playback of audio but there is no jack for either output or input. The frame size is 1920x1080. Ricoh GR throughout remains active with continuous AF, having subjects focused at the centre.

Ricoh GR features APSC sized sensor which can be found in many DSLR these days. The sensor is of CMOS type. The resolution is of a 6.2 megapixels. The sensor doesn't come with Anti-Aliasing filter meaning the camera would be able to deliver you with more detail. The size of the sensor numerically is 1/1.7-inch. Sensor is the area where Ricoh has advanced among all other specifications.

Ricoh GR gives out an exceptional image quality owing to the APSC sensor.

The lens has its own sharpness, which is admirable.

The camera is quite compact and discreetly build. The camera sufficiently lightweighted and can be operated single handedly.

Shot to shot response time is impressive.

The AF system works well and fast.

Menu system is easier to navigate and physical controls can be well handled.

You get RAW format files which you can edit within the camera only.

LCD has fine dot resolution of 1,230,000 dots.

The pricing, given the market rivals has been done reasonably.

There is hotshoe for optical finder and other accessories.

* Ricoh GR lacks on battery life.

The buffer capacity for burst shoot is limited.

As far manual focus is concerned you might not get as great feeling as you would with AF.

Exposure compensation flickers since the rocker is not very convenient.

JPEG files get treated with bitter noise reduction.

Beyond ISO 3200 the images become quite noisy.

Metering system is sensitive beyond expectation.

Auto White Balance might re-design the whole frame with more warmth.

The quality of video is at times unacceptable.

No IS image stabilization offered and no in built WiFi.

The battery charger is sold separately.

Not many movie recording options offered.
