Ricoh Pentax 645D DSLR Camera Black - Expert Reviews
Ricoh Pentax 645 D DSLR is a large and heavy professional imaging device by the maker Ricoh. It bags lot of appealing features like Kodak-developed CCD sensor with resolution of 40MP measuring 44 x 33mm. The camera comes with D-FA 645 55mm f/2.8 AF (IF) SDM AW lens. The top resolution for an image is 7264 x 5440 pixels and it can be said that the camera is just for shooting stills, since there is no video mode available in the camera. Given its top resolution, you can crop images severely and still make it up for large sized prints. At the rear, there is a 921k dot TFT LCD monitor upon which, an effective anti-reflective coating is present to aid wide viewing angles.
The highlights of the camera are the dual cards slots supporting SD/SDXC/SDHC cards, auto lens correction, digital spirit level, support for .PEF, Adobe DNG formats, fine noise control over entire ISO range, in-camera high dynamic range processing and mini HDMI output. It’s quite clear that the camera has it all, and presents itself with a set of advanced features to tackle a vast number of shoot situations.
Design and Build Quality
Ricoh Pentax 645 D DSLR is a large camera than most of the DSLRs, especially when the 55mm kit lens is added to the front. Due to the large grip and big controls, its looks like a normal DSLR but once you get your hands onto it, it becomes easier to handle as you go through. The camera weighs nearly 1.5 kilos, to some it is heavy, but carrying it around in a bag is really not a big deal. The body is all weather-sealed wherein, you can notice the rubber seals around, battery doors and memory cards that are designed in a way to keep-out dust and moisture.
The 40MP Kodak CCD sensor embedded here has optical low pass filter omitted from its profile to keep images from softening down. Coming to memory, Ricoh Pentax 645 D DSLR comes with dual card slot configuration whereby you can insert SD/SDHC/SDXC cards by keeping one for JPEGs and other for RAW files. Sadly, the camera does not support the use of compact flash cards. At the rear of 645D, is a 3 inches wide screen that is relative to the size of the camera. There is another large LCD info display at top that tells you about its current settings. Build and design quality of the camera is just fine and the level with which it competes is that of Canon 1D mark III and similar others.
Focus and Face Detection
Ricoh Pentax 645 D DSLR has all its focus points gathered at the center of the frame that lead to fine focusing and recomposing, should the subject stays at the center. A 1.1fps speed is what you get when you are to shoot the stills continually. When a moving subject is placed before the camera, it can’t keep up with the motion. Types of AF you get are full, single and center. These features are of Pentax 55mm f/2.8 D FA SDM lens. Face detection feature does not form a part of this device.
Lens and Image Stabilization
Ricoh Pentax 645 D DSLR is compatible with 645 lenses by Pentax. If you happen to have an apt adapter, you can mount lenses originally designed for Pentax 6x7. The 55mm f/2.8 D FA SDM lens that is usually seen with this camera has its 35mm equivalent focal length of 43mm. The lens is the only one by Pentax that is driven ultrasonically. It changes the gap between your subject and you, and presumes that you wish to maintain the same of field of view while changing perspective. Since the sensor is large, it creates a shallow depth of field, good for cameras. Speaking on other lenses, 75mm is too sharp with an aperture of f13, 45-85mm is good enough, 80-160mm is good at least at wide angles. Sadly, there is no image stabilization feature present.
Screen and Menus
Ricoh Pentax 645 D DSLR uses a 3 inches wide 921k dotsdisplay at the rear of the camera, right below the viewfinder. The super resolution helps to confirm focus and the LCD is of TFT type that backs wide viewing angles. Also, the anti-reflective coating aids that. The top panel of LCD shows the current settings at a glance and all other info can be seen at the rear LCD. The electronic level can be seen with just a button press, which, in turn, lets you to level your shots prominently. As far as the menu system is concerned, it is of a typical DSLR type and quite easy to use.
Ricoh Pentax 645 D DSLR uses an inexpensive D-LI90, the same battery found in other DSLRs by Pentax. Fortunately, the battery life is good that is, on a single charge you can get around 480 shots done and in daytime, for probably 9 hours. There is a battery indicator that tells you when you hit the danger zone. You can keep the LCD ‘on’ for almost all the time when you are out, the battery life won’t get much affected and therefore, you wouldn't worry about it. What is good about this rechargeable battery is its size, for you can easily go out and buy a spare, should you want entire 24 hours of outing.
Sorry, Ricoh Pentax 645 D DSLR does not have any video support. It does come with a mini HDMI port so you can view your stuff on HD TV. Other connectivity features are PC sync to link camera with studio lights, a remote control port, off-camera flash and mini USB port. There are dual card slots that support SD/SDHC/SDXC cards. There is no CompactFlash cards support.
Ricoh Pentax 645 D DSLR has its sensor as its headline feature. It is a 40MP CCD sensor that measures 44 x 33mm. The top resolution images that can be attained are of 7264 x 5440 pixels, which inturn allows for severe cropping and very high quality, large printing choices. Kodak has provided the sensor and it has AA/optical low-pass filter absent, the presence of which would have ripped off the fine detail from every image taken. The ISO sensitivity range of Pentax 645D begins from 200 to 1600. It might seem to be a very small range to many, but what compensates to this feeling is the noise control over the entire range. The resultant images won’t show you an authoritative effect of noise control upon them, which means they won’t be over-processed by the camera.
