Ricoh Pentax MX1 Digital Camera Black - Expert Reviews
Ricoh Pentax MX1 features bright optical zoom lens and a 3 inches wide tilt screen. The sensor is a back-illuminated CMOS type. The entire design of the MX1 is retro with bottom and top plates made of Brass. The focal length of the lens is 28-112mm of 35mm equivalence. The quality image and video are resulted owing to the new super resolution technology. The sensor used is 12 megapixels that provides for an acceptable ISO performance. Videos can be shot at Full HD resolution and work done can be stored inside SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards. Also there is 75MB of internal memory. As a performer, imaging device, buying Pentax MX1 is not a bad deal.
Design and Build Quality
Ricoh Pentax MX1 has its bottom and top plates made of Brass. Some may say that it is the largest compact given the pool of contemporary compacts but overall, its size helps in better grip. At the front face there is AF assist lamp, zoom lens and material for gripping the camera. At the roof you have power, dial, zoom, exposure and video record button. To the left is pop flash which works via switch at the left side. Near the pop flash there is mic for sound to enter while you record video. On opposite side there is USB and micro-HDMI port. At the rear you have aperture, exposure, ISO, custom, directional, playback buttons and even more. Due availability of all these at the body itself you neednt rush through menus. Now with battery and memory card, the cam weighs 391 grams. The absence of hot-shoe yet after having an UN-utilized space for one could embarrass enthusiasts.
Focus and Face Detection
Focus modes of Ricoh Pentax MX1 include Autofocus , Manual, Spot , Centre, Multi , Snap , AF Tracking , Infinity and Face Detection . The minimum focus distance you can achieve is 1cm for macro shots. Usually the focusing is quite fast and precise. Macro shots can be little tricky to handle but after you have learned it, your desired frame-filling macros come easily at your hand. AF works well enough and comprises tracking, single centre point, wide auto and 25 point grid option where you can choose a particular region for AF to work on. Tracking focus is a little disappointing due to its slowness.
Lens and Image Stabilization
Ricoh Pentax MX1 uses lens with maximum aperture of f/1.8 – f/2.5 . The 35mm equivalent focal length is 28mm-112mm. The optical zoom that can be used is up to 4x. The performance of the lens is both good and bad, yet overall good. The lens take care of both pincushion and barrel distortion. There is slight mention of chromatic aberration while the purple fringing is very high. At both ends, wide-angle and telephoto, the detail is good enough. As long you don't shoot wide open, detail at the corners remain good. Exposure compensation is reliable and absence of vignetting lets you put more faith in this camera's imaging. Coming to stabilization of images, MX1 uses sensor-shift IS.
Screen and Menus
Ricoh Pentax MX1 uses a 3 inches wide LCD monitor with resolution of 920k dots. The screen can be moved from the rear of the camera and can be rotated forward 90 degrees, so as to get below the waist shot possible or it can be move backward to nearly 45 degrees so as to achieve over the head shots. Since it is tilt screen, the brightness can be adjusted to 7 levels and 15 settings can remain for color adjustment. The menu system is has been fairly laid out. There are three pages for choices for stills . There is one page for settings for recording video. For setup options there are 4 pages and two for customization where you can adjust white balance and electronic shutter. Info button lets you quickly set the choices so you don't feel an utter need to touch the menus.
Ricoh Pentax MX1 uses Lithium-Ion D-LI106 rechargeable battery. As per CIPA testing standards, you can achieve 290 shots. A charger also gets shipped inside the box. The battery power all though is very good. The user may feel that this the area where MX1 can bring down its competitors.
The good thing about the video mode of Ricoh Pentax MX1 is that you can achieve high speed and time lapse videos under VGA mode with resolution 640x480. When you record your Full HD videos you can avail optical zoom. When in video mode, to record video you don't have press the video button but shutter release. When you zoom optically, the noise gets recorded. The resolutions for videos that can be availed are 1920x1080(Full HD) and 1280x720(HD). The frame rate that you can use is 30fps. Audio comes in stereo sound format. The Full HD video get recorded in format MP4 and compressed in AVC/H.264. The HD videos can also be recorded at frame rate 60fps. Video length for normal or time-lapse is 25 mins. And for speedy videos time is restrained to 15 seconds.
Ricoh Pentax MX1 uses a CMOS type 1/1.7 inch sensor. The sensor when compared to the other modern camera is larger. Also sensor is back-illuminated, the circuits are located at the back of the sensor such that light gets a clear aisle to hit the sensor wall. The processing engine used and Super Resolution technology, which is their latest are of impeccable quality. The megapixel count is 12.1MP. Image stabilization hence used is SR Shake Reduction sensor shift. The width of pixels is 4000 and Height is 3000. aspect ratio is 4:3 , 3:2 , 16:9, 1:1 . Coming to ISO sensitivity, ISO 100 deals with less noise. Noise after this level obviously till ISO800, where detail is good enough that the image can be used. Noise hits a stronger level at ISO1600, increases then to 3200ISO and to 6400ISO images captured are useless.
