Ricoh Pentax Q10 - Expert Reviews
Ricoh Pentax Q10 is an interchangeable lens camera. Its release dates an year after the release of Q. So the camera basically is an update. The back-illuminated CMOS sensor has a resolution of 12.4MP. The sensor lets the camera to achieve images with higher sensitivities and at low noise. So low light performance is good enough. Maximum ISO sensitivity level is 6400. There is HDR mode that produces images after shooting them at different exposures to combine shots having detail in both shadows and highlights. To fight blur free images the Q10 comes with sensor shift image stabilization which is body integral. The AF system of the camera is fast enough to get good shots. Above all the camera can prove to be a good buy but other contenders in the market have lot to offer that Q10 doesn't.
Design and Build Quality
Ricoh Pentax Q10 has an elegant design overall. It has been well-built. The magnesium alloy covers the body along with high-quality plastic. The dials and buttons are intuitive. Pop flash pops to need. The design has retro charm to it. The standard zoom lens has smooth zoom ring and finish is superlative. The size of the camera is small and not as easy to handle as a DSLR. One handed operation is commendable given the size. But it is not as pocketable as a CSC. The front grip doesn't make it look like a good bargain. Buttons at the back are small and situated at the right side. The physical controls for shooting are sad enough. The LCD is 3-inches wide but, resolution is still low. The protective glass coat leaves a gap between the panel and the glass that results in reflection while viewing screen at different angles. So taking the camera out in sun light can be forgotten. There is no viewfinder, that adds to the trouble. There is dpad at the back that lets you touch timer, flash, white-balance and ISO while other buttons sit for exposure compensation, menu and info. There is also a green button that can be used as a function button to attach to often used settings. At the roof you have on-off, shutter release, playback, a dial to set aperture and shutter speed and chunky mode dial. There is a hotshoe at the roof for an external flash. At both the ends of the camera there are doors, having battery placed in one while in other, the SD card. At the bottom you have PC/AV and HDMi outputs.
Focus and Face Detection
Ricoh Pentax Q10 offers quick AF when with 5-15 zoom lens. The AF at the wide-angle setting is impressive. The focus speeds are better than the predecessors. When the subject is on the move, the AF assist lamp helps to focus in low lit conditions, so the low-light performance is reasonably improved. The brightness so imparted by the lens can disturb the subject resulting in squint in the eyes of the subject in the portrait. When the subject is stable the AF works fine enough. This camera features contrast detection AF system with 25 points with continuous and single AF modes. AF's sensitivity range is EV1 to EV18, so you needn't worry about what the camera can encompass, it can hold a good number of objects within focus. Focusing modes include spot, autofocus, face detection and AF tracking. Face detection can detect up to 12 faces at a time.
Lens and Image Stabilization
Ricoh Pentax Q10 delivers good enough performance when it comes to preserving detail at both ends of the lens, wide-angle and telephoto. Purple fringing is handled well. The lens with focal length 5-15mm has and a dis-satisfactory macro focus distance of 30cm. The maker offers two lenses in Q high performance lenses series. 8.5mm prime lens fulfills desires of shutterbugs who want large aperture for quality images. Those who further wish for wide-angle capability can reach for f/2.8-4.5 5-15mm (28-83mm equivalent) zoom lens. there are three other lenses in Pentax Q lens series. These lenses are cheaper than the ones mentioned due to absence of some features including AF, filter threads. The camera features sensor shift image stabilization with integral dust removal. This means the lenses mostly do not feature IS. IS helps the user to shoot pics with slow shutter speeds. Pentax claims that user can shoot up to 4 f stops slower than had it been the case of IS's absence.
Screen and Menus
Ricoh Pentax Q10 features 3 inches LCD monitor with a screen resolution of 460k dots. A protective glass covers the panel with a gap in between. The gap actually results in reflection and glare when you take the camera in sunlight. There is also no viewfinder extra. The brightness of the screen can be increased but it will eat more battery resulting in even lower shot count. The menu system might remind you of a pro-DSLR. They are moderately easy to navigate.
Ricoh Pentax Q10 runs on Rechargeable lithium ion battery D-LI68 . Battery weighs 200 grams. As per CIPA testing standards, you can achieve 250 shots but if you involve activities like editing pictures and reviewing, you can take only 230 shots for a day on single charge.
Ricoh Pentax Q10 shoots videos at Full HD resolution, 1080p. Other options are 720p and VGA. The frames sizes, correspondingly, are 1920x1080, 1280x720. You can use optical zoom while recording the video. There is no stereo sound recording. The frame rate at which the videos get recorded is 30fps.
