Ricoh Pentax X5 DSLR Camera Black - Expert Reviews
Ricoh Pentax X5 is a bridge camera. A bridge camera serves as halfway stop when you begin from modern digicam and head towards a professional DSLR on the course of advancing imaging devices. In simpler words, those who cannot pocket a DSLR yet desire for DSLR like features in a comparably compact system turn to bridge cameras, satisfactorily. Pentax X5 is one such device that seems to serves the purpose, aptly. It features 16MP back-lit CMOS sensor. The optical zoom capability is up to 26x. The lens' focal length, 35mm equivalent, is 22.3-580mm. The focal length range is good enough to cover landscape shots to portraits and close-ups. To avoid the influence of camera shake over image, meaning to avoid blur free images, Ricoh has added sensor-shift type shake reduction system as well a digital SR mode. X5 comes with a 3 inches wide LCD monitor with resolution 460,000 dot. The screen can be titled both for above the head and below the waist shots. There is electronic viewfinder. Videos can be recorded in 1080p resolution at frame rate of 30fps. There is micro-HDMi terminal for an HDTV connection so you can view your work over TV. For enthusiasts X5 is good enough.
Design and Build Quality
Ricoh Pentax X5 is mostly rubber. There is rubberised hand-grip while the lens barrel is also treat the same way. The camera looks much like a DSLR though being a bridge camera. There is an EVF and mode dial and many physical controls to access the settings. At the top there is mode dial, power button, rocker for zoom, shutter and control for exposure compensation. A button on the side activated flash. At the back you have buttons for display, EVF, playback, drive / continuous shooting, macro, flash, menu mode and movie. A green button works for two way for you, put it on and it sets camera settings automatically or it works as function button to set ISO or WB. The EVF gives good resolution viewing while menu system consumes time. The camera runs on 4 AA batteries, with CIPA rating for AA batteries being 330 shots. If you want to make more shots, you can use Ni-MH batteries(CIPA 500 shots) or lithium AA batteries(CIPS 950 shots). The camera has been well constructed by the maker. It feels lighter in hand to carry around. You can use the camera single handedly. The zoom lens is managed by rocker next to shutter-release. After using the optical zoom you can use digital zoom which can extend the zoom measure up to 187.2x but quality of images gets drained. There is dual SR shake-reduction facility that prevents camera shake from influencing the quality of images. The 3 inches LCD can be tilted for below the waist and above the head shots. Aperture and shutter priority modes are not available. Exposure can be handled manually via a dial at the back. There is also an exposure compensation button on the plate.
Focus and Face Detection
Ricoh Pentax X5 has following focusing modes; Autofocus, Manual, Spot, Infinity and AF tracking. The minimum focusing distance that can be attained for macro shots is 1cm. The AF system is a capable one. The standard focus mode utilizes 25 AF points all set at the centre. In spot AF you can choose these points as per your suitability. Manual-focus is intuitively easy to use. The face detection is faster than many modern cameras around.
Lens and Image Stabilization
Ricoh Pentax X5 captures nice detail at both the ends of the lens, wide-angle and telephoto. But you cannot escape the purple fringing in areas of the image that are contrasting. The maximum aperture ambit is f/3.1 – f/5.9 . The user can zoom optically to 26 levels. The 35mm equivalent focal length range is 22.3mm – 580mm. The camera uses dual shake-reduction system that conjoins the sensor shift type SR system with digital SR mode to prevent the camera shake. The combination of these technologies results in blur free images.
Screen and Menus
Ricoh Pentax X5 uses LCD monitor of resolution 460,000 dots and size 3 inches, diagonally. The LCD can be tilted for both low and high angles. The menu system is not great because all the significant functionality that one would wish to access is buried down in layers of menus. This involves lot of navigating through till you actually get to the option you desire to set.
Ricoh Pentax X5 uses 4 AA batteries . As per CIPA testing standards you can shoot 330 stills. You can also use Lithium AA and Rechargeable Ni-MH batteries. Former can give a shot count of 950 and latter shot count of 500.
In Ricoh Pentax X5, the video gets recorded at Full HD, 1080p resolution. The sad part is that you cant use an optical zoom while recording the video. The frame size is 1920x1080(30 fps), 1280x720(at 60 or 30fps) in HD and in VGA mode, 640x480(at 30fps). There is no stereo sound provision for recording the audio. The format in which videos get rendered is MP4. You cannot shoot stills while recording video. Coming to the quality of video, it is acceptable. The camera manages exposure wisely while recording videos. The low light performance in video mode is good and recorded audio, though not in stereo is acceptable. Any zooming you do will be only in digital format.
Ricoh Pentax X5 uses a 16 million pixels back lit sensor of type CMOS. This sensor is used mainly because of reduces degree and impact of noise on quality of image. The maximum output pixels are 4608 x 3456 and max file size a still can attain is between 4 to 5 Mb. ISO sensitivity range is 100 to 6400ISO. Exposure compensation runs +/-2EV in steps of 1/3EV. The noise is quite low at 100ISO. At 200ISO noise appears a little bit. At ISO400 softening of the images begin to happen. With ISO 800 and above images become softer and softer. ISO1600 still results in pictures that can be used owing to acceptable color detail.
