Samsung NX2000 - Expert Reviews
Samsung NX2000 is a nice compact mirrorless cam sporting a 20.3 megapixels APS-C sized CMOS sensor along with a large 3.7 inches wide touchscreen at the back. It delivers an appreciable quality to the image with good level of details and color in addition to having a good performance in the noise segment too. The level of control over the camera is good. The large touchscreen helps here but when you go out, visibility drops a bit. With this camera is in hand, you can access a number of lenses including the new 10.5mm fish eye lens, compact prime lenses, 16mm wide angle 30mm prime and 20mm lenses. The 20-50mm compact kit lens works to deliver good amount of detail though it lacks the optical image stabilization feature and slows the focus speed. But the same will disappoint you if you wish to head for recording videos with it.
The camera is better used with an 18-55mm regular lens that offers optical image stabilization kit lens. With a wide range of lenses, brilliant Wi-Fi sharing and great quality image, Samsung NX2000 is worthy for serious consideration. The large 3.7 inches touch-sensitive screen comes with an impressive resolution and allows the camera to be used in both playback and photo modes.
Design and Build Quality
Samsung NX2000 offers a plastic body with a large textured grip at the front as well at the back. At the top, there is a flash hot shoe and lack of internal flash, also there is compact pop flash that has been provided to match the color. Also, at the top, there is a command wheel to choose the shoot mode like smart, auto, Wi-Fi and advanced. When you are in a mode, the command dial can be pressed to set more settings like aperture priority, where you can set the aperture. There are a number of buttons over the camera with power button, shutter release and a direct link at the top. You can also access the command dial and at the rear, there are three buttons like home, playback and a dedicated video. The menu system has been cleanly laid out and can be selected and scrolled via touchscreen with options that are large and easy to view.
Focus and Face Detection
Samsung NX2000 focusing modes involve Face Detection, Multi, Autofocus, Manual and Spot.
Lens and Image Stabilization
Samsung NX2000 comes with a 20-50mm kit lens that gives an equivalent focal length of 30-75mm and works well against barrel and pincushion distortion. These defects are corrected within the camera. Although, some purple fringing and chromatic aberrations can be observed at times. The detailing of images is quite good via lens such that you will end up with few sharp pictures in good lighting. Macro performance is plausible but the minimum focusing distance of 28cm isn't that great. Using a lens of 50mm can yield better results. Portraits taken with flash show some red eye while detailing is impressive. The camera does strive to hunt for focus under low light conditions with the 20-50mm lens kit. You get reliable exposure along with illuminated saturated colors.
Screen and Menus
Samsung NX2000 uses a WVGA LCD touchscreen monitor of 3.7 inches size. The resolution of the screen is 800 x 480 pixels or 1,152,000 dots. The menu system is cleanly laid out and can be chosen and scrolled by using the screen with settings that are large and convenient to use.
At the bottom of Samsung NX2000, there are the usual tripod socket, compartment for battery and micro SD/SDHC/SDXC card slot. The battery life is rated at 340 shots as per CIPA/Samsung standards. You also get a microUSB cable and AC/USB adapter. The use of inbuilt Wi-Fi drains the power and if you mean to go out with this cam and intend to use Wi-Fi often, carrying a spare is advised. The battery type used is called BP1130 rechargable battery.
Samsung NX2000 comes with the options of fading out or in of videos. There is also an option for wind cut wherein, you can switch the audio recording off as well. Since the lens kit of 20-50mm lens doesn't come with optical image stabilization feature, the resulting recorded videos aren't as smooth as expected and with continuous autofocus activated, the lens can perhaps struggle to find focus, so it better to use an 18-55mm OIS lens for desired results. Moreover, the resolutions for recording videos are Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels), HD (1280 x 720 pixels), VGA (640 x 480 pixels) and QVGA (320 x 240 pixels). The frame rate used here is of 24 or 30fps. The sound gets recorded in stereo format and optical zoom can be used.
Samsung NX2000 uses a 20.3 megapixels CMOS APS-C sized sensor that offers 5472 as the pixel's width and 3648 as its height. The width of the sensor is 23.5mm and height is 15.7mm. The aspect ratios used are 3:2, 16:9 and 1:1. The ISO sensitivity range used here is from ISO100 to ISO25600 wherein, up to ISO1600, the noise is low, there is some loss of detail at ISO3200 and beyond this, the noise increases. At ISO6400, detail is lost again and results aren't as good since hot pixels begin to appear. At ISO12800, a high level of noise begin to appear and ISO25600 is of no use.
