Sony Alpha 3000 Black - Expert Reviews
Sony Alpha A3000 camera makes use of Sony’s E-mount lenses that are used in Sony NEX mirrorless cams like Sony NEX-3N, NEX-6 NEX-5T and NEX-7. This is the first camera that is both, mirrorless interchangeable lens camera and styled like a DSLR. Compared to traditional DSLRs, MILCs gain from being compact and cost effective. As per Sony, it is not the matter whether DSLR styled camera has its working similar to a true DSLR with optical viewfinder, for consumers will be happy with an EVF and would want more of the feel of a DSLR with large grip. In markets like USA, it could be more of problem as far as the sale of this camera is concerned, since it is considered that bigger is better. Overall, the camera poses like a DSLR and does most like it but is not a DSLR and given the price, one should not expect more from it.
Design and Build Quality
Sony Alpha A3000 comes in a plastic body with plastic surroundings about the electronic viewfinder. It feels though it has been built by keeping the price in mind - as if, there was more concentration on price than on design. The large handgrip comes with a decent texture of rubber that makes holding of the camera quite easy. The thumb grip at the back is plastic and textured. The plastic construction feels solid. The physical buttons are of normal size and easily approachable. Though the weight of the camera is lighter than Alpha A58, the EVF provides 100 percent of frame coverage.
The EVF is placed at the top via LCD/EVF button wherein, eye-detection has not been included. USB connection and memory card slot have been kept for side access. The good thing is the presence of Sony’s multi-accessory port flash hot shoe. The viewfinder is quite small and you would have to place your eye perfectly in the middle of it to have a look through the same, for if you deviate, the image quality can easily suffer. It might as well become difficult for you if you are wearing glasses.
Focus and Face Detection
Sony Alpha A3000 offers the following focusing modes; Autofocus, Manual, Spot, Face Detection, Multi and Centre . Both focusing and shutter responses are quick. From shot to shot, you don't find much time wasted. The device uses 35 focus points and locking onto a subject is easy with working face detection.
Lens and Image Stabilization
Sony Alpha A3000 can be availed with an 18-55mm optical SteadyShot kit lens. The barrel distortion at wide-angle position of the lens is quite visible. At the telephoto end, minor pincushion distortion can be observed. Chromatic aberration and purple fringing are low, other than the far corners of the image where contrast is slight, detail is fine and at corners, you can find some softness intruding. The lens is resistant to flare even when the sun is coming in the frame. You can undoubtedly get good macro photos while using the telephoto position of the lens.
Screen and Menus
Sony Alpha A3000 comes with a 3 inches wide screen at a resolution of 230k dots. The screen resolution is quite low and interlacing has been used. One could observe some flickering, yet the colors are all good. The menu system is all clear and pop-ups help to elaborate on the settings and options. After you have gotten accustomed to the menu system, you wouldn't find it difficult to get to the settings that you want to be altered. There are a number of advanced options that one would not expect in an entry level DSLR involving Auto-focus, fine tuning and focus peaking.
Sony Alpha A3000 runs on a rechargeable battery pack, NP-FW50 with a CIPA/Sony testing rating of 470 shots. The battery used here is of info-lithium type, which tells you about how much battery is left in percentage format. The battery adapter used here is AC Adaptor AC-UB10.
Sony Alpha A3000 records videos in Full HD format and stereo sound gets recorded with the video. Optical zoom can be availed while you are recording videos. The frame size is 1920 x 1080 pixels at a frame rate of 25fps. The optical image stabilization feature benefits video recording, backed by OSS (Optical SteadyShot) lenses.
Sony Alpha A3000 offers an Exmor CMOS APS-C sized sensor of 20.1 megapixels resolution. The width and height of the pixels are 5456 and 3632. The width of the sensor is 23.5mm and height is 15.6mm. The aspect ratios are 3:2 and 16:9. The ISO sensitivity range begins from ISO100 and goes over to ISO16000. The noise is low at ISO100, 200 and 400 with level of detail being good. At ISO800, detail is dropped a bit with noise still low. At ISO1600, noise increases with drop in the detail. At ISO3200, noise increases more and the same goes with the detail. ISO6400 shows considerable reduction in the finer detail with increase in noise, yet the results are usable. At ISO12800 and ISO16000, color saturation is good enough. Some images can still be used if resized. The imaging results are quite similar to that of Sony Alpha A58.
