Sony Alpha 7 II Digital Camera Black - Expert Reviews
Sony Alpha A7 Mark II is a redesigned and updated version of Alpha A7 Mark I. It comes with a large handgrip, a re-located button for the shutter release and also re-located rear and front command dials with extra custom buttons. The body of this camera has a more metallic and textured finish than the previous one. Belonging to A7, A7R and A7S family, this camera comes with a 24MP full-frame super 35mm Exmor CMOS image sensor that offers sensitivity range of ISO 25600 to ISO50. Video recording is done at Full HD resolution. For connectivity, options are Wi-Fi and NFC. With Sony’s app one can connect the camera with smart devices to transfer images and videos. Besides a 3 inches wide tilt screen at the back, there is an XGA OLED Tru-finder as well. There is a sensor shift image stabilization feature, a SD/SDXC/SDHC memory card support, and a mic and headphones socket. Overall, this camera is truly a package for photographers in the intermediate phase.
Design and Build Quality
This camera is made of a tough magnesium alloy body that is weather resistant and allows for side access to the memory card slot support for SD/SDXC/SDHC cards. The tilt screen has been integrated into the body of the camera smoothly and this means that it can be a bit difficult to pull it from the camera. The redesigned body has more of a metallic and textured finish to it. EVF is of excellent quality and delivers sharp and bright display. The WB button has been altered to the ISO button and the memory card LED has been relocated, so it can be seen easily. The video recording button has too been relocated, so that you dont start recording accidentally. There are sockets for the mic and headphones for those interested in monitoring sounds and adjusting sounds levels. There is a large front grip, all textured in rubber coating that goes from the back of camera to your thumb. At the top, there is an exposure compensation dial that gives quicker access to the controlling exposure. The front dial can be used for aperture and the rear dial can be used for shutter control.
Focus and Face Detection
Focusing mode are Autofocus, Manual, Spot, Face Detection, Multi and Centre. Focusing is quick and makes use of the phase and contrast detection. It works well with a 28-70mm lens and a class 10 memory card.
Lens and Image Stabilization
Sony Alpha A7 II delivers excellently detailed images. Besides a fair dynamic range, the camera features a number of ways to effectively increase it by using either the HDR setting or the DRO setting. Zeiss 55mm f/1.8 is the kit lens with a small hood, so that it doesn't suffer from bright sunlight when shooting is daylight. With prime lenses in the Alpha A series, the camera produces good results. While shooting, A7 Mark II is capable of recording images in both the formats; RAW and JPEG. Moreover, it is the first Mirrorless Interchangeable Lens Camera from the maker that sports an in-built sensor and a shift 5-axis image stabilization feature rated at 4.5 stops.
Screen and Menus
The menu system is well laid out and imparts an ease of usage plus there are a large number of options that aid you in taking better pictures. At the rear, there is a high resolution screen with 921k dots. It is 3-inches wide and can tilt down and up. The OLED EVF with a resolution of 2.4 million dots, an eye-detection sensor and dioptre correction activates itself just as you bring your eye closer to it.
Sony Alpha A7 Mark II comes with a rated battery life of 350 shot counts as per the CIPA/ Sony testing standards, which is good enough for a mirrorless camera. This figure is when you are shooting via LCD screen but it drops down to 270 shots when you are using an EVF. However, more use of the EVF and that of Wi-Fi may cut down on the battery life even more. The battery provided is NP-FW50 Info-Lithium type, which means you can actually see the amount of battery remaining. The battery can only be charged via USB and not separately.
Sony Alpha A7 Mark II captures videos at Full HD resolution along with stereo sound recording and there are choices to manage the level of audio and as well its timing. The wind noise filter can also be turned on. Headphone, microphone and HDMi ports can be seen at the left side of the camera. Also, direct HDMi output can be availed as well. The resolutions at which the videos get recorded are - full HD, HD and VGA. The video frame rates are 25p and 60p. One can also use the optical zoom while recording the video.
Sony Alpha A7 Mark II offers an Exmor R CMOS sensor with a pixel count of 24.3MP. This sensor is of full-frame type with pixel's width of 6000 units and height of 4000 units. The aspect ratio used here is of 3:2. And the ISO settings begin from ISO50 and go up to ISO 25600. For best detail at the lowest noise results, it is recommended that one uses the ISO range of ISO 50 to ISO1600. For conditions where there is low light, one can go for ISO3200 to ISO6400, for here the noise increases a bit but detail remains. At ISO12800, the level of noise becomes higher and results may still be usable when resized, to be used on the internet. At ISO25600, noise is very high and detail is too low.
