Sony Alpha A5000 - Expert Reviews

Overall Review

Sony Alpha A5000 comes with a 20.1 megapixels APS-C sized sensor. The camera comes with inbuilt Wi-Fi and NFC connectivity features, which allow the camera to be linked up with a number of devices like smartphones and tablets. The BIONZ image processing engine has been designed to produce clean, detailed images with low noise. The ISO range can go as high as ISO16000. The images can be uploaded directly to the social networking sites like Facebook via a direct upload app. There are other apps available as well, with the help of which, you can control the camera via smartphone. There are a number of applications to download from PlayMemories Camera Apps website wherein, some of them costs and some are available for free. Also, there are a number of modes that help you to take creative pictures via picture modes like miniature, poster effect and selective color.

The camera by itself crops the images of portraits and stores them separately. Videos can be recorded in Full HD format with stereo sound format. You can use the power zoom lens out and in without disturbing the focus. The camera, Sony Alpha A5000 can be availed with the 16-50mm power zoom lens. The lens collapses when it is switched off, thus making it a lot compact. The lens is equal to 24-75mm in 35mm terms. The camera also features optical image stabilization. The auto white balance function works well under tungsten light conditions with results being slightly warm. This could be pleasing to many but the tungsten preset would give even better results, one can say precise and accurate. The AWB does an excellent work under the fluorescent light conditions with preset for fluorescent working even better under the slight color cast.

To improve the dynamic range, there are a number of ways available in harsh light conditions. When the iAuto and superior Auto+ is on, the camera, Sony Alpha A5000 uses the back light scene mode, if necessary. You can turn to the Dynamic Range Optimisation feature, which lies inside the program mode. The auto settings produce very nice results without giving any artificial look to the images. The HDR mode combines a number of shots that are taken at different exposures. If you set the HDR mode to 6EV, an unrealistic look gets attached to the images.

Design and Build Quality

Sony Alpha A5000 comes in a compact plastic body with a good rubberized grip for hands. There is also a plastic square at the back for your right thumb to rest. The camera weighs only 210 grams sans the lens. There is an inbuilt pop flash that gets activated via a small button which is next to flash. At the top, there is a power switch and a shutter release button that sits surrounded by a zoom rocker lever. This can be used to control the power zoom, you can zoom in playback mode while viewing images. The scroll wheel at the back makes it easy to browse through the menus.

For Wi-Fi, you can access the apps that have already been installed or you can download more. There are some apps that require you to pay like time-lapse, lens compensation, multi-exposure, direct upload, multi frame NR, flick add on, photo retouch, picture effect plus, smart remote control and direct upload.

Focus and Face Detection

Sony Alpha A5000 doesn't come with face detection and focus mode is autofocus only.

Lens and Image Stabilization

Sony Alpha A5000 can be availed with a 16-50mm power zoom lens that collapses when the camera is turned off, thus making it a lot more compact in size. The focal length of the lens of the camera is equal to 24-75mm, in 35mm terms. There is feature called optical image stabilization as well. Coming to its performance stats, the lens works well in a number of conditions, though the images come a little soft. When shooting at wide-angle, the images become soft enough at the farthest corners. Macro shots become reasonable though it can get difficult to get sharp image(s) when subject and camera are real close.

At both the ends of the lens, wide-angle or telephoto, the distortion is quite low. Chromatic aberration gets controlled easily. For lens compensation, there are three things; lens distortion, chromatic aberration and shading/vignetting. By default, these things are set ‘on’. With power zoom lens, you cannot switch the lens distortion correction off.

Screen and Menus

Sony Alpha A5000 has a scroll wheel at the back that makes it easy to cycle through the menus. The menu system here is almost the same as that in the Alpha style cameras than Sony’s NEX camera menus. This helps the users who are familiar with the menus available on Alpha cameras. At the rear, a 3 inches wide monitor can tilt upto 180 degrees. It is ideal for shooting the camera low down or taking perfectly framed portraits for self. When the camera is tilted forward, it switches to self-portrait all by itself. The countdown before taking the photo begins. The resolution of the screen is nice and can be viewed easily in sunny weather. It has a setting for it, so when you are outside in the sun, this setting brightens the screen and makes it easy to use the camera.

Battery

Sony Alpha A5000 comes rated with a battery life of 420 shots as per CIPA testing standards. The camera uses a Sony Info-lithium rechargeable battery wherein, a specific mechanism tells you exactly how much of the battery is remaining, in percentage terms. The camera also gets supplied with a battery charger.

Video Mode

Sony Alpha A5000 captures full HD videos with stereo sound and one can use power zoom while recording videos. The results are smooth videos for all to view. The optical image stabilization feature helps to keep the videos smooth. One can use the zoom ring about the lens. The zoom lens works quickly to zoom on the desired subject. Other than this, you can use the zoom switch, which works slower and smoother when zooming in and out. The frame resolution is of 1920 x 1080 pixels at frame rates of 25 and 50fps. The sound comes in stereo format.

Sensors

Sony Alpha A5000 offers a 20.1 megapixels CMOS type APS-C sized sensor wherein, the width and height of the pixels are 5456 and 3632 respectively. The width of the sensor is 23.2mm and height is 15.4mm. The aspect ratios are 3:2 and 16:9. The noise is low at ISO100 and remains the same till ISO800. The noise kicks in even more at ISO1600 but the loss of detail is not frightening. At ISO3200, the shot delivered still represents good color reproduction. The noise increases at ISO 6400. There is indeed a loss in detail and color saturation. At ISO12800 and above, the level of noise is high, yet the results may still be usable. Noise reduction is though heavy. This seems to cut on some of the fine detail. It is possible to alter the high ISO noise reduction setting from normal to low, thus helping to produce more and more detailed photos.

Pros

  • Sony Alpha A5000 produces fine image quality and color
  • The camera can be held comfortably
  • HDR and DRO modes
  • The lens kit is compact, 16-50mm
  • NFC and Wi-Fi connectivity
  • Noise reduction is low
  • Shutter response is fast and focus is quick
  • Sony Play Memories Applications are available

Cons

  • Sony Alpha A5000 inflicts strong noise reduction
  • Picture effects can be applied on JPEG format images only and not RAW
  • One would have to additionally use apps like multi-frame, multi-exposure, time-lapse etc

Its a good camera but......

Its a good camera (if you overlook the build quality, which isn't the besT), but the value for money is simply not there. You can get a NEX5N, 5R, or even a 5T at the same price.
