Sony Alpha A7 Black - Expert Reviews
Sony Alpha A7 is the cheapest, lightest and smallest mirrorless camera available. It offers focus peaking, high resolution EVF, manual focus and easy operability. FE mount lenses can be added to the camera and color reproduction seen in the images is just perfect. There is a 24.3 megapixels sensor with Full HD video recording. You can avail of microphone, HDMI and headphone sockets in the device. The low light performance is excellent. The battery life has a bit of a glitch, for there is no inbuilt flash and external battery charger. Apart from these minor niggles, Sony Alpha 7 is a great mirrorless camera.
Design and Build Quality
Sony Alpha A7 comes with an orange ring above the lens mount that was first seen in Alpha 99 and RX1 cameras from Sony. This means that A7 has a full-frame sensor. The rest of the imager is subtle in design with a black metallic body and SLR styling. The viewfinder at the top and back of the camera resembles that of OM-D E-M5 by Olympus. There is a tinge of retro style in the look of the camera. The focus speed is rapid and the camera is overall responsive. There is a back switch that lets you to alter the operation of MF/AE button to AEL button. The video record button at the side has been placed such that you don't start recording by mistake. Also, there is mic and headphone socket at the side for people who are inclined to take more videos.
One can also opt for clean HDMI out via cable. The mode dial offers PASM mode along with panorama and auto mode. There are two customizable modes present as well. There are also C1 and C2 custom buttons at the back along with C3 and Wi-Fi function button. The C3 button also doubles as the ‘delete’ button when you are in playback mode. The functions that are available over the screen are due to the function button that allows for quick access to the favorite options. The large front grip has a textured coating of rubber that extends round to the back of the camera and has been shaped for your thumb to rest. With smaller lenses, the camera is easy to be held. When FE mount lenses are added, the camera becomes heavier and then, you would have to hold it with both the hands.
Focus and Face Detection
Sony Alpha A7 comes with focusing modes such as manual, spot, multi, centre, autofocus and face detection. The autofocus system used here is of fast hybrid autofocus type. This means the camera involves both phase detection and contrast detection systems.
Lens and Image Stabilization
Sony Alpha A7 uses FE mount lens namely, Carl Zeiss Sonnar FE 35mm f/2.8 ZA T that works quite well. The detailing at the corners is good and the lens is the most compact one available for this device. Any lens based distortion is corrected by the camera itself. The focus speed and exposure are good. The camera, with this lens, delivers amazing detail and color. The contrast, saturation and sharpness can be personalized as desired.
The second lens called Sony FE 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS kit lens delivers good performance at both, wide and telephoto ends. The lens gets the advantage of image stabilization. Macro performance of the lens is good but not as good as one would have expected from a macro lens. The distortion correction feature is 'On' by default in the camera and cannot be turned off, though chromatic aberration and vignetting correction can be turned off. It is possible to view RAW images in the camera. There is no in-body image stabilization.
Screen and Menus
Sony Alpha A7 features a 3 inches wide monitor sporting a resolution of 921k dots that can tilt up and down. Also, the OLED electronic viewfinder sporting a high resolution of 2.4 million dots and which comes with an eye-detection sensor and dioptre correction feature automatically switches to viewfinder when held to the eye. The quality of the viewfinder is excellent with clean and sharp display. This involves a dual axis electronic leveling aid. The EVF also has a good sized rubber about it to help during outdoor viewing and especially helps those who wear spects. The menu system of the camera is similar to that of Sony Alpha cameras - simple and easy to use.
Sony Alpha A7 comes rated with 270 shots as per CIPA/Sony testing standards. The power is derived from an info-lithium battery that tells you about the remainder of power inside the battery. The battery gets charged within the camera via USB cable. Since the battery usage experience is average, it is advised to carry a spare if you wish to go for a day out with this camera. The type of battery used is called Rechargeable Info-Lithium Battery (NP-FW50) that comes with an AC adapter USB supplied for charging purpose.
Sony Alpha A7 records videos in Full HD resolution along with stereo sound. You can adjust audio levels and audio out timing along with wind noise reduction. Mic, headphone and HDMi ports can be seen at the left side of the camera. You can take out clean HDMI out of the videos. Other resolutions for video catching are 1440 x1080 pixels and 640 x 480 pixels. The frame rates used are 25p and 60p. Optical zoom while recording can also be used.
Sony Alpha A7 is fitted with a full-frame Exmor CMOS sensor sporting a megapixels count of 24.3. The width and height of the pixels are 6000 units and 4000 units. Again, the width and height of the sensor are 35.8mm and 23.9mm respectively. The aspect ratio is only 3:2. Coming to the ISO performance, the ISO range begins from ISO50 and goes up to ISO25600. The high ISO noise reduction options involve; Low, Normal and Off with the default setting as Normal. Long exposure noise reduction options are off and on.
From ISO50 to ISO1600, the level of noise is quite low and image appears good. At ISO3200, with the introduction of noise, there is a minor drop in detail but noise controlling feature makes up for the lost quality. At ISO6400, detail goes down deeper and noise increases though the results appear good. The quality of the image worsens at ISO12800 though the coloring still remains plausible with noise control applied. At ISO25600, the noise level is at its highest while color saturation does suffer a bit.
